and it's crazy how he actually knows the poker too... Marlo just had won the round with a full house, he didnt hear marlo say "full house" as he burst shortly after, he just quickly reads the table, see who had the best hand and go on "this 4-5 beats a full house". and he is correct, a "four of a kind" beats a full house, considering you play with 5 cards a hand. "4-5", and also the caliber of his gun, a .45. is totally insane

The Wire was like a Greek tragedy adapted for modern times. Michael K. Williams, perhaps better than anybody else in the show, took it upon himself to portray a man who demonstrated the moral failures and hypocrisies of this world. As an aside, he portrayed a gay black man in 2002 who kicked ass and took names, way before any mainstream politician or celebrity figure endorsed the idea of treating gay people with the same decency and respect any person deserves. That's fucking dope.

Chalky White was an amazing character

Omar had a kind, gentle soul inside his fearless killer persona. He was forced to be the hardest gangsta out there because he realized that's what he had to do to survive, but actually there was no evil in him, he cared so much for Butchie and his grandmother and never harmed people who weren't in the game. It''s amazing how despite growing up in Baltimore he was able to maintain such a strict and respectable morality.

Well first, he never existed so he’s whatever the writers imagined him to be, but putting that aside In gonna push back a little. The fact that he had family, church going and law abiding family, means he had support and therefore options other than being a criminal. I’ll agree that he had certain principles he didn’t violate unlike others in the show like Chris or some of the other blood thirsty killers, but he still intentionally chose a darker life because he wanted it. He didn’t have the courage or the character to work a 9 to 5 etc.

If I remember right, Omar is based on a real street character in Baltimore named Crazy Teddy (I can't remember his last name). He had been shot in the head and lived and was feared on the street. He mostly worked as an enforcer for Tony Beh who was a huge heroine dealer in Baltimore (and was wiretapped by DEA and BPD), but just like Omar, he kind of did his own thing. The best Crazy Teddy story I heard was him walking up on a heroin street shop, and demanding their money. One of them noticed that Teddy didn't appear to even have a gun (he rarely carried one because he was a felon and the cops jacked him up constantly hoping to catch him with one), and said, "You don't even have a gun". and Teddy said, "Do you really want me to go get one?". They handed over the money.

Sometimes I reflect back on this masterpiece and think maybe the Omar character is more hyped than it actually was, but then I watch MKW and it just gets better every time. Every inch of body language, every vocalization, it's fucking perfect for the role he is playing. The stand off with Bowtie is one of TV's greatest scenes. MKW said he only retried to have an acting career because of his one episode on the Sopranos, which came after failing to get many roles he auditioned for and when he was ready to throw in the towel on Hollywood ambitions -- the acting bug hit him hard after that, and he soon joined the cast of The Wire. No Sopranos casting MKW, no Omar Little. Crazy shit.

Omar's death goes to show how badly the streets of Baltimore have deteriorated; little children walking around with guns and killing on a whim. His death is similar to Knockout Ned in the movie City of God. Both characters were once noble men and had a certain code of honor, but they had a thirst for revenge that blinded them. Their hubris was their eventual downfall; both of them were killed by children when they least expected it. Great character though, Omar is what got me hooked into The Wire, my favorite character on the show hands down.

Omar is a perfect character, especially for a show like The Wire. It’s a perfect amalgamation of the actors charisma, the swag, the storylines, and the writing/directing of each scene. Even his shortest scenes where he does nothing but talk it’s a scene that draws you in. Omar has his own code within the code if the Game. From his first scene on camera he’s such an intensely likable character.

I love how he looks at him at 2:58. They never saw anyone talk to Marlo the way Omar did.

The Wire consisted of many excellent actors. But I think Omar Little, alongside maybe Bubbles, might be the most iconic character out of the entire show. He's definitely one of the most skilled actors in TV history. Definitely deserves a place alongside actors like Gandolfini, Jon Hamm and Cranston. RIP Michael K. Williams, one of the greatest of all time.

I'll never forget the day my mom told me about Omar she said he robs the dealers, he's gay and he takes the Lord's day off. That won me over lmao

Marlo was based on two real gangsters from Baltimore; Marlo Bates and Tamir stanfield...Both were ruthless killers and both are serving life in Maryland DOC...Avon is based on one of the Barksdale family from Westport Baltimore which is southwest Baltimore...One of his nephews was a good friend of mine...Omar i believe was a composite of Dennis Wise, Chump Little, and Lil Melvin( who makes some cameo's) who was related to one of my aunt in-laws...the Wire was as close as you get to a reality show with out it being a reality show. Well written from experience in all sectors from law enforcement, to politics, to the media of the day, to the street!

yea Donnie Andrews (he died 3 years ago) in real life - heart-related issue. He was married to Francyne Boyd (Fran Matthews) she was the Inspiration for the same-name character in the HBO 2000 Mini Series "The Corner" the 6 episode mini-series that came 2 years before The Wire launched. I grew up in Baltimore County on the County/City line (Harford Rd/North Avenue). Fran Boyd & family lived not far from where I grew up. 10 minutes tops. (The scene where Marlo is shooting/target practice in the woods w/ his soldiers) that is literally walking distance from where I lived for 20+ years. It's a Frisbee Park on the county line (off Cold Spring Lane). - Deer Creek runs through that area. It's funny too you would think all that gun fire (even if just target practicing) would illicit some reaction, cars flying by only 50 feet from the edge of the woods. Anyway - theres a few real-life Baltimore Natives (that we all know about) Donnie Andrews was the older guy that got lead in the head during the shootout in Monks Apartment (where Omar jumps several stories) and we all know that was inspired by the real life jump from an apartment in Parkville, Maryland (East Baltimore) when Donnie Andrews was in the late 80s - robbing someone for drug money. He committed I almost positive 2 murders, which he copped to and did X amount of years in prison before turning his life around and upon being released he committed himself to outreach to the youth in the city. He was a complete gangster / killer / stick up boy / prison inmate / turned community activist you gotta respect that. Basically Donnie Andrews is the real life Omar & the real life Cutty lol. Then theres Felicia "Snoop" Pearson (who now lives in California) but grew up in Baltimore...committed a self-defense murder at the age of 14, spent 9 years in Jessup Womens Correctional Facility (MCI). We know her story (Michael K Williams first met her in a bar in Baltimore City, before she was interviewed, and then eventually casted). She has that Baltimore tongue down pat. Ed Burns co-creator also worked with David Simon on The Corner HBO mini-series...they were close with "De'Andre McCullough" he was the inspiration for the same-name character De'Andre (Fran's son) in The Corner...the real life De'Andre - did time in prison, sold drugs, used drugs...been in/out trouble...he died (in real life) a few years back - David Simon said he always had faith De'Andre would rise above, he attended De'Andre's funeral. Anyway De'Andre in real life - he played the role of "Lamar" in The Wire (Brother Mouzone's security) you know the guy who is always getting Brothers magazines mixed up/forgetting his Harpers LOL. Then theres Melvin "Little" Williams )Lil Melvin( - one of the biggest traffickers of the late 60s/early to mid 70s - before 2 arrests, and 1 long incarceration for heroin trafficking in 1978 I am pretty sure Ed Burns played a role in that investigation and subsequent arrest (cause Ed Burns was a infantry-man in Vietnam like my father) and like my own uncle (my mothers brother) he grew up in Patterson Park (Dundalk/Essex area) - he was a Baltimore City Police (South-East/7th district) Sergeant - and did several narcotics investigations/wire-taps in the late 70s/early 80s. My uncle retired from the Balt City Police Dept in 2004, he was a first-responder for many years (suicides, drug overdoses, gunshot victims - he was the first patrol officer to show up upon potential crime scenes) he had a strong stomach naturally lol, and his son (my cousin) Adam - who is in his early 40s - has already been in the Police Dept for 18-19 years (he transferred to Baltimore County, and then Harford County, Maryland Police) he does sex-crimes (online pornography) hes a detective now...but in 1996 - in Baltimore City (we still have the news paper clipping) he shot a man 5 times during an altercation (he was called to a domestic dispute a man beating his wife, the man was high/drunk - no shirt on, waving a machete around) cousin showed up and it was across the street from the Kennedy Krieger Institute (rehab facility) in West Baltimore/Park Heights. All my moms side of the family (uncle, cousin, etc) are greek too (Kirhagis/mothers maiden name before it was shortened was "Kirhagisouglou" no joke. Season 2 shows all the dock-workers/local IBS port-people. Thats where my mother grew up (Grey Street). / O' Donnell Heights (which back then 70s/80s wasn't as bad - like when I was born) but parents moved out of Dundalk / Bmore County line - its a shit hole nowadays. Anyone that lives local would tell you the same thing. And the local Wal-Mart in Dundalk ? LOL you dont even WANT to go inside that place at night (Cherry Hill). Fired a warning shot, first warned the man several times to drop weapon and get on stomach turn over hands up (etc) - he fired an additional 2 shots at mans leg/abdomen - then 3 more shots as the man kept coming down the stoop w/ the weapon he fell - was (obviously) disabled...he was rushed to Maryland Shock Trauma, where he was pronounced dead a few hours later...I was younger when it happened (like 8th grade/late middles-school) he never really talks about it, not like he enjoyed it - only time he ever had an encounter that turned physical - even my uncle after 23 years in the BPD never had a shoot-out or had to use his service weapon. He had 100s of arrests, dealt w/ addicts, he walked a beat (etc, etc) but in contrast my cousin within just a few years in the BPD - killed a man - which was well documented in the newspaper (Baltimore Aegis). I now live in Harford County, MD (last 8 years) - you know the scene in I think its late season 4 ? where Omar is locked up and he talks to Bunk telling him about the store-owner Ol' Face Andre is "lying on him" eye-ball witness lying...you know where Marlo is trying to setup Omar and get him killed in prison. But Omar is (with Bunks help) transferred to that county detention center (HCDC) Harford County Detention Center lol - I know alot of ppl that have been in that place...its within walking distance/eye-sight from my apartment. I used dope for a few years (which is common out here) Harford County is now nicknamed Heroin County, same w/ Baltimore & Anne Arundel Counties (the 3 closest counties to Baltimore City) have an epidemic in heroin use in the counties/these specific ones. As awhole its alot worse now then when I was in high school in the late 90s. It has nothing to do with with being a fan of the show (you could be an addict / anywhere in the country). But I've been clean last 8 years - since moving to a different county...but hell where I'm at - is worse then where I WAS before. The local police barracks have that sign w/ all the overdoses per year (and this year it was something like 300-something) - 100+ being fatal overdoses, all local law enforcement and first responders are required to carry Naloxone nowadays (I was on Suboxone for a few years before detoxing completely in 2013). But yea its a problem - out here, and its a big part of the dope game in general you see in this show...this is the consumer side of things of course, I cant speak to the trafficking side, or enforcer's - I dont know that world, I wont pretend too lol. Just heard the news. My heart sunk. RIP Omar! We’ll talk about your legend forever.

What I loved best about Omar character is that it wasn't about selling drugs, or street corners.. he was what the drug dealers and street hustlers feared even more then the police. "OMAR'S COMING" was basically a warning call to drop everything and run. The drug dealers even had a Omar stash to give him just because they didn't wanna fight him.

It’s always the subtle comments/lines, voice inflections, facial cues that are demonstrated the absolute brilliance of this show... too many to mention but when Marlo says, “wear it in health” it just fvcked me up lol 👌🏾 RIP MKW ... True but the character still shouldn't be gay or a snitch considering who its based off, most of the wire is based of fact but they just had to change those details to make gay people and taddle-tales happy. I just don't understand why they would make him gay? A snitch I kind of understand in the reasoning that Omar could have gotten away with snitching because everyone already wants him dead, but there's no actual reason for him being gay in the wire and Donnie Andrews was not gay. Before anyone says it, no I'm not a homophobe, it just takes away from the character knowing that the people writing it are pandering to gay people for no actual reason when they could just do a biographic on a actual real life gay person or snitch who did something great, like Alan Turing or some famous undercover FBI agent, rather than making Donnie Andrews into homosexual snitch and calling him "Omar Little" to make certain people feel happy. Being gay or a snitch just doesn't add to, or fit Omar's character at all imo.

Rest in peace, by far one of my favorite characters of all time.

I think one of the reasons Omar is so beloved is because he's one of the few characters in The Wire who's mostly free to do what he wanted, while almost everyone else were part of this or that organization and had to play by the rules,with obligations and all kinds of shit dictating their behavior. That's why some people think he didn't fit in the show as well, I've heard opinions like "he was almost like a cartoon character", but I think it's simply because of his greater freedom to act the way he wanted. I think Marlo wanted that kind of freedom, or more like a freedom that comes with being so feared that nobody wants to fuck with you, but the obligations of being the boss of an organization caught up with (or was forced on) him as shown when Chris and Snoop kept him out of the loop regarding Omar in order to protect him and the organization. You can't be free to do as you please when you're part of a greater organization. That's kind of what we see in the end with Marlo, he regains his freedom by walking out on the most restrictive environment he'd been in yet and returning to the corner, once again free to act as he pleases. Man, whenever I try to write some small thing about The Wire it ends up a short novel. There's too much to analyze and KZread ain't the proper place for doing so.

Daniel Westerlund Marlo was always a bitch, no morals, indiscriminately killing, etc. Omar, although dead, is a legend. The dudes on the corner were glorifying his death when Marlo walks up and they don’t even know who he is. And they never will.. unless he gets back in the game (AKA Life sentence). Marlo basically wanted Omar’s street rep, but never got it. “He ain’t man enough to come down to the street with Omar”.

That whistle gets me every time great actor I watch this show once a year since it had aired

In hindsight, Omar was one of the most critically awesome characters of the show, he embodied fear with class. RIP to the great actor who perfected this awesome character.

***** His death is a representation of his own ethos. He is who he is and will always be that, living and knowing that at any turn he could be killed. It was some what poetic in the way he was taken down, the consent viscous cycle which is ever prominent in the series is shown in raw truth by Omars killing.

I thought his death was shit as well until someone told me that with the way Omar died, he would always be a legend, like when on the streets you hear people telling tall tales on how he went down, holding two AK47s surrounded and died in a blaze of glory basically, No one would ever know the truth and in that way he would become mythological in that world. Pretty badass if you ask me. I do wish he would've finished Chris at least. Liked how Snoop went out

MrScot1206 The myth and legend isn't in how people remember Omar going down but in how that little kid took him down. Which in turn will continue the cycle and create the new Avon/Marlo.

One of the best to hit the screen. Can tell you probably the most respected gay man to ever live. By all circles

3:04 is my favorite line by Marlo Stanfield. Simple and cordial on the surface, but underneath, looming and eerily threatening.

Omar: “money ain’t got no owners, only spenders” Wise words from one of the best TV characters

Hands down the single best drama television has ever produced. This show caused everyone who watched it to think about their own compass, moral or otherwise. And hands down, Omar Little is the best character and true to Greek tragedies, his death caught all of us off guard. When the show ended all I could say was "Wow" never have I seen anything that comes close since.

Every line that he said played every major part of the show but in life itself.

Legendary performance, cheers Mr. Williams.

As much as I played poker it never dawned on my that him saying I think these .45s beat a full house.....got dam the writing was brilliant.
