I was 12 when this song came out and it made my eyes leak. I'm on the way out now at 63 with cancer and the song still makes my eyes leak and yes, I have very blue eyes.

No one knows what it's like To be the bad man, to be the sad man Behind blue eyes No one knows what it's like To be hated, to be fated To telling only lies But my dreams, they aren't as empty As my conscience seems to be I have hours, only lonely My love is vengeance that's never free No one knows what it's like To feel these feelings like I do And I blame you No one bites back as hard On their anger, none of my pain and woe Can show through But my dreams, they aren't as empty As my conscience seems to be I have hours, only lonely My love is vengeance that's never free When my fist clenches, crack it open Before I use it and lose my cool When I smile, tell me some bad news Before I laugh and act like a fool And if I swallow anything evil Put your finger down my throat And if I shiver, please give me a blanket Keep me warm, let me wear your coat No one knows what it's like To be the bad man, to be the sad man Behind blue eyes

I'm not good at figuring out song meanings but this song made me cry often because my brother and I were raised by an alcoholic single Mother. Through sports I was able to connect with our Father if he ever came around. But my brother Mike wasn't able to connect at all. He was left out on an island all alone. In turn he started to get in trouble as a young teen, ran away from home a couple times and ended up in children's homes. But we loved The Who TOGETHER. It was special. I have brown eyes, his eyes are blue. And I'm crying as I type this. Wow.

I thought they had their own tapes to listen to so, not wanting to be rude I just bought one....Animals by Pink Floyd. Unbelievably , they didn’t have any tapes. So , that tape stayed on continuous play. for the trip to and from the show. It never got old. Another killer song by the Who, Keith Moon really did add a lot to these songs. When viewed by each element comprising the song, they’re sparse and perhaps even simple sounding but when combined it’s rather complex, great composing production engineering and mastered. Just a f’ing awesome song

The thing to notice here is that known wild man Keith Moon reserved his drumming for the rocking part of the song. Roger Daltrey kept the growl (mostly) out of his voice for the verses. The Who was well known for rowdy hard rocking, and in this song the tension created by calm and pretty verses was felt by every rocker who heard it. That's suspense, and frankly, great musicianship.

Live at the LA Forum...1969 or so...I was there...this takes me back...we all held up our lighters at the start of the concert..joints and pipes in the other hand...it was all passed around freely one brother and sister in rock to another...a security guard passed out just breathing our air...they carried him out..small faces opened the concert...or at least I think they did...lol...I'm a old man now...67 years old all my close family are dead..Mom Pop and Brother...my ex is a psycho that enjoys ripping my heart out with her ...Gaslighting and...Emotional affairs....with other men...she has a " Hes just a friend " she likes to have sleep over with her for the weekends and whenever...she showed me on a skype call from 6 thousand miles away one time while he was handing her a glass of wine on a Friday night at her apartment alone right in the middle of our talk of getting back together...But you know what...I still like myself and try to take care of myself and I have memories like this concert and my Brothers and Sisters I feel that are out there young and old that love this old Rock and Roll...Be good to yourself

I had a girlfriend in college at the time and I would visit her on weekends and drive my 1963 VW bug to visit her , playing this over annd over again on the way. I've always loved this whole album and every song on it. It brings back such good memories and I still love it.

I discovered this song in a cereal box as a kid. For some reason, the cereal company included a Who single in the box. "Who's Next" became my favorite Who album. This song explains the first forty years of my life - the legacy of being a bullied and unpopular kid. "My love is vengeance" explains most of my unsuccessful pre-forty relationships. I am old now and have made peace with my upbringing and past experiences. Yet this video takes me right back. Thank you for posting.

    1. This is Moon's song. His drumming to the vocal is brilliant and he just smashes the cymbals at the end of Roger's sentences once the song kicks in hard. 2. The Who's very best songs (this obviously being one of them), are better to me than any other bands very best songs. Not writing The Who is the greatest band ever, but they reached highs I don't think anyone else did.
