People have been doing check washing about as long as checks have existed. You used to be able to ask your bank to send you your checks. There are also a few things you can do that make them more difficult to wash, but you're right in that your best practice is diligence. Desperation is a byproduct of our society and dishonesty an unfortunate part of human nature.

Isn't there a serial number on the checks, to prevent that a check with the same number gets cashed twice...in that case shouldn't the blame be on the bank? One way is to use colored/decorated checks...in that case no one can say "they didn't noticed the white stripe" (since those got better as well...before you had to paint it, now it's a tiny white stripe). Never use a black pen, since that copied in the worst printer will still look authentic...with colored they could end up with two different shades and that is noticeable

Purchase and use a Uniball 207 pen to write your checks with! They are not expensive but the ink in them is way different from standard pens. The 207s ink becomes a permanent part of the check and cannot be washed off with chemicals and therefore renders the check useless to the thieves!

Happened to my grandparents this year for 30k total. Huge pain, as you have to deal multiple people, and agencies. Luckily, my grandpa had a good relationship with his banker, who noticed that my grandfather “spent” 30k on stuff which was not typical for him, and helped alleviate the situation. Good luck, Stan!

Totally sucks what you have to deal with. Had it happen to us. We did an address change to a PO box. We live in the country and do not have anything delivered to the mailbox at the end of the driveway anymore. All goes to a PO box. Its a hassle sometimes but way less of a hassle than closing accounts and the other headaches associated with mail theft. Doesn't mean that they can't still get access to info but it takes away one path to ID theft. Best of luck getting this situation straightened out, Stan.

I worked for a bank decades ago and when we processed a customer's transaction we put every document together then those transactions went to a different department where they encoded each document and balance each transaction. If we kept a check out they knew and someone had to find the missing document. That could entail contacting the customer to see if they still had the document. With electronic deposits is easier to keep the checks but by tracing the check number you should be able to determine the original recipient. I have alerts on my accounts for any amount over a specific limit to send me notifications on.

The sad part about fraud is it cant be completely prevented. If they are skilled enough they can get what they want, the trick is to just make it as difficult as possible for them. They will be less inclined to go through the additional steps and go after the other low-hanging fruit. I would suggest at the minimum having 2-Factor Authentication on all your accounts, text alerts for any transactions over a particular $ amount, or even a dual signature requirement for checks above a certain threshold.

Even with the best precautions they find a way to try. One way is they know the precursor codes for types of cards and banks from there they use a # generator to fish until they find a match followed by test transactions of 1$ on your account. I actually discovered that my debit card # had been used 5 states away at a pizza joint. The point is that that card had never been used since I received it. The transactions all failed because they had no info other than the #. The fake card was generated in this manner and I was one of eight others with bogus charges at the same pizza joint. Local police would not take a report because they got nothing from account so I called the locals where the shop was located and they took a report!

To combat that, we stopped paying employees by check and paid by direct deposit or debit card only. Employees loved it since they got money into their accounts faster. Those without checking accounts got the free debit cards with free withdrawals. They were hesitant at first, but totally loved it once they saw they could withdraw their $ in cash at any ATM and could use the debit card as a credit card when needed.

Sometimes they have someone working inside your Bank. Even the Big Banks. Or works for someone you wrote the check to. This happened to us but I check our account daily and caught it while it said Processing and contacted the bank both electronically and by phone. It was actually someone at the Bank working with a lady at one of the local companies we deal with. Now that takes guts. When she took the check to the Bank her cohort was at lunch. A friend of mine was her Teller and she told her since it was over her approved limit to cash she had to get a Manager's signature. Went to the Manager's Office he pretended to ok it and she told her she had to get the money from the vault as she was new and only allowed X Amount of Dollars in her drawer. While doing all that the Manager called the Police and she stalled in the Vault and the Police arrived. She turned almost instantly on the Crooked Teller. They were both arrested and went to jail. All my accounts were opened in new accounts with a flag of anything over $50 had to be verified. If that Teller hadn't gone to lunch early no telling how many people they would have ripped off. I will say I wasn't the first.

Why does everyone think it was on his check, it was a cashiers check which means the bank wrote this check and took funds out of his account to pay someone or some business for services. It obviously was altered with the money directed to someone else. This is a bank problem as he had nothing to do with this. The bank takes the money out of your account before they mail it so they need to answer some questions as none of this makes sense.

@@HostileTakeover2 I wasn’t responding about the pen. Good advice though! I was commenting that “The dirt monkey” was referring to it as a cashier’s check which later he’s showing what they do when “whitewashing a check”, which follows about your comment using an indelible pen. I guess i am the only one hearing him say Cashier’s check at the beginning, which raises different red flags because its not about stealing your personal check which has to clear the bank when it goes back to the bank for payment . A cashiers check is written by the bank on one of their checks for payment to whoever you stipulated to them. It not your check they altered, its the banks check. The cop said his bank information was compromised which it wasn’t if it was a cashier’s check. The funds are deducted before its sent to the intended party. A cashiers check is like a money order, its as good as gold! No-one questions a cashiers check. Some services like UPS will require you pay them with a money order or cashiers check because they don’t have to worry if its good or not. I guess i don’t understand how he doesn’t see the difference. It brings up a serious set of questions that everyone is skipping over that only assholes like me pick up on, lol!

If it's your business account see if your bank offers positive payment service. That is what I had to do. The bank will not process any checks until you report the checks to the bank.

I and other small businesses have problems with ACH transactions posting to the business accounts. And it seems that tbe police have no interest in processing the information given. Even when we happen to collect all the information and wrap it up in a bow. So frustrating, at least I have a good credit union and they're very helpful with attempts of fraud other that I know have lost lots of money. Glad they caught the people for you.

I heard you talking about your eufy cameras but they have major security issues. The company straight up lied about outside sources accessing your cameras. You should look into the reports Linus tech tips did on the issues and make sure that it's still the product for you.

I had something similar happen a few years ago. Someone in San Antonio bought a set of big fancy wheels for a dually truck on my account. I was a bit shocked to have my bank call me and ask if I just spent 9,000 dollars in Texas. I drove 2 miles to the bank and walked in. Nope.. that wasnt me. It took almost a month to get my money back. As far as I know, the person who did it was doing it A LOT and is now in prison.

As a small business retail store owner most people do not know that the bank has 0 to little responsibility for fraudulent check and credit card use. If I as a store owner take a bad check or bad credit card and I have followed all the proper procedures utilizing a POS system and pay a company to make sure I do not take bad payments and I happen to get a bad card or check the bank charges ME back for the funds. Thats right, the bank goes into my bank account and takes the money back so they can give it back to their customer, its called chargebacks. If you were to make the banks responsible for fraudulent use of THEIR accounts, I can guarantee you banks would put a stop to fraudulent use of their accounts. As it stands, they have no incentive to really stop this. Until the banks bear the cost for fraudulent use of their accounts, we will continue to have this problem, and who pays for it? We do

I avoid using checks at all costs, but when I do I use a fountain pen with security ink that will not wash out of the paper. The Eufy cameras are a cool idea, but fyi SD cards are notorious for failing. They don't do well with constant and sustained writes. Check to make sure the footage is actually being saved and it can be played back. It would really suck to notice something happened and you check the camera to find out the SD card failed and you have no recorded footage.

Anyone can print a check or cashier's check. The only things they need are your account number, routing number, name, and address. You can buy check stock at office supply stores. Your signature can be stolen from anything you sign. Always pay all business debts with a business credit card. Pay your business credit card with electronic funds transfer. Apply the same to your personal bills. Never write a check unless absolutely necessary. Always use an account with charge protection and pay it off monthly or on payday. Financial fraud is too easy now and its easier to replace a credit card that was compromised than to change bank account numbers.

The facts do not suggest that the scammers necessarily accessed you account. All you have to do is check your account online and see if there are any deductions that you have not made. Whitewashed checks are not the same as a Cashiers Check. My father in law had a situation of thousands of dollars of whitewashed checks. The scammer got access to the original checks which were in a rural mailbox to be picked up by postal service. The solution to that is to not leave your outgoing mail anywhere it could be stolen.
