He's one of those guys that just doesn't care about going out of tune. He gets away with it most of the time, but it was pretty egregious here. I've heard them do it better, but it's kinda charming in its own way.

Jack also needs credit for not changing the lyrics because he’s a guy. I’ve also read that Dolly loved this cover.

TBH the White Stripes cover is the first time I’ve ever heard the song. But it is a well written song IMO and the Stripes do an awesome job with it.

I love this version of Jolene, especially at the Blackpool lights. Jack has an absolutely gutwrenching way of singing (and playing) when he feels like doing it. Most obvious case is his rendition of U2's Love is blindness. It tears me apart, while U2 doesn't even get close. His being out of tune just works with the angst imo.

Yeah, he actually liked that it went out of tune.

The Sisters of Mercy did a fantastic rock cover of this song back in 1983, but that sounds nothing like this. (They also did a cover of Knocking on heavens door that GnR took alot of inspiration from.)

Aa Moe Tucker haa stated keeping a solid drumming metranome as she did in The Velvet Underground you have to realise is done to lay a solid foundation so the guitars can lift off, and have a solid re entry back into the song and just as Lou with Moe, Jack knew Meg had no training and just wanted what he got from her and no more. I mean i love Bonham and Peart but they wouldnt have lasted five minutes entertaining Jack White's compositions..

I read some of the comments and almost didn't watch the video because I was afraid of how negative the reaction might be. But I'm glad I watched, great reaction. The song is all about pure emotion of his vocals--that's what's supposed to be compelling and I'm really glad you thought he knocked it out of the park in that regard! Suuuuuper pumped for Jack White - Respect Commander next, should be a good change of pace from what you're used to from Jack White!

I have a suggestion for a reaction video: Dinosaur Jr’s cover of the Cure’s Just Like Heaven.

The fact that the guitar is out of tune during the chorus matches perfectly with the melancholy and despair that the lyrics try to deliver. For me it couldn't be any different.

Always liked this tune and The White Stripes…but I generally need something darker.

I have always said that if you need meg to be a human metronome she can easily handle that if you ask her to do anything beyond that it turns into a shit show quickly.

Meg always knew her skill boundaries..As Moe Tucker has stated, her and Meg both came from a self taught background and both kept the beat solid so the music ie guitars could lift off and have a sound base to re enter the song.

The G is supposed to be out of tune for this version

2005 version is way, way, way better
