"And the Beat Goes On" was The Whispers only number 1 song on the dance chart. It was also their first and biggest hit in the United Kingdom, peaking at number 2 on the UK Singles Chart. The song appeared on the Canadian RPM Magazine charts, peaking at number 27.
Monie Love sampled the song's backbeat for her 1989 track, "I Can Do This."
Will Smith used a sample of the song for his 1998 hit single, "Miami".
Madonna also samples parts of this song during her performance of, "Beat Goes On" on her 2008-2009 Sticky & Sweet Tour.
The song is featured in the videogame Grand Theft Auto: Vice City.

Them puppets know they can sang, so well that you can't make out what they are saying sometime. It just all messhe's together. I will hear it one way, and somebody else's will hear it another. Like the sweet sound of hit music I heard not hip music. 1:45 listen. Hey' 1:54. Same numbers just turned around. I call them puppets because I have a little chocolate doll in my drawer that talks and he reminds me of them. Just press his hand and he will talk. Scared me at first but every time I hear a song by the Whispers I think about my doll. It was a gift from a gentleman.
