The Weirdness of Physics with Brian Greene

Bestselling author and award-winning physicist Brian Greene will discuss the cosmic philosophical implications of modern physics. What are we to make of quantum physics, with its paradoxical descriptions of reality; or of string theory, with its claims that there are 10 or more dimensions; or of the seeming implication of modern physics that time travel is possible? Is “scientific materialism” really an apt description of the worldview of modern physics? Is there room for free will and for purpose in the universe science is revealing? Greene will be joined in this discussion by Robert Wright, Union’s Visiting Professor of Science & Spirituality.
About The Insight Project:
The Insight Project (Insight) is a new multi-year program series that explores modern conceptions of theology and spirituality through a diverse array of thought-provoking lectures, screenings, performances, and on-stage conversations. At its core, Insight seeks to redefine our understanding of theology, not simply through the reformulation of doctrine but through a reframing of imagination. This conceptual turn requires that we give significant attention to social sciences, the humanities, and even the hard sciences. In its inaugural year, Insight programming will focus on Theology & the Natural World

That was really interesting, thank you! In solving a mystery, the axiom is often, "Follow the money." In solving the mystery of life, Brian's axiom is, "Follow the math." He even reiterated it at the end when answering a more esoteric question about extra dimensions and the many worlds theory with, "I'm perfectly happy to go in strange directions as long as the mathematics are taking me there." You've got to love someone who's just as excited abut the journey as he is the answers, you know?

One example of Brian Greene's genius has just been demonstrated in regard to the discussion on consciousness. Which shows that Brian's explanation was completely overlook what Brian just said and went on to say said that it is a means of survival. A survival technique and it evolved for such a purpose. Where as the other talker went on to say he didn't see any real purpose known, for consciousness, except some sort of esoteric meaning. I am such a Brian Greene fan after hearing over 100 interviews, podcasts, Science festivals etc. and not in one of them did he and I not resonate 100%

The above was completely typed wrong. This is what I said. One example of Brian Greene's genius was just demonstrated in regard to consciousness. He proceeded to say that consciousness was a process by which it was formulated as a means of survival, as in a survival technique developed that helped with that. The other talker went on to say that consciousness was some sort of esoteric way of being.

    A. 20:40 "never ever be surprised" - exactly the oposite: in every world one is surprised B. Measurement shows us where the particle WAS. The particle is always moving so it is uncertain where it is until it is measured, after measurement it is moving again so uncertain position again ..aaand maybe the particle itself is like a bunch of something and the probability of particle being there or there means only that one part of that bunch is there, another there .. and the measurement causes the particle just pop up as one bunch

If the Many Worlds hypothesis was correct, would I not have multiple consciousnesses? This is not the case as we only have one unique consciousness. Also how would Q.M. work, given that a particle in a state of quantum superposition, can only be determined, once an observation is made, this implies a unique singular consciousness.

  • @potita24

All these discussions leave the most important question in Quantum Physics; why does the particle becomes a particle when observed. The observations during the double slit experiment were clear: a single particle creates a interference pattern when passing through the two slits, clearly showing it travelled as a wave. But when the scientists installed the measuring device to see what’s going on, the particle becomes a particle and the interference pattern disappears: why?

My favorite quote of all time is from Dr. Greene who said about time and space that “we are all part of a strange reality” and I have added this “which no one hasn’t understood and will never be”. Truly speaking, time and space are really two strange and weird phenomena which can’t be understood. Think about it! As far as the host is concerned, he wants to be Dr. Greene and living in a denial about it. 🥴

Perfect! There was some tension between the two, as there should be. I think the encapsulating moment was John Horgan's question and Greene's response that physicists will go on with 'the weird' because that's where the math takes them, and that evolution will eventually make us either adjust or smart enough to make less weird. Robert Wright's advocacy for less intellectual hubris and more mysticism (ie accepting that some things will never be understood) were justifiable counterpoints.

  • @acetate909

    @acetate909

    5 жыл бұрын

What justification is there for the notion that some things will never be understood? Science is the opposite of hubris. Science seeks to answer questions and is always admitting error and self correcting. Religion is the epitome of hubris with claims of infallible knowledge that can't be challenged or questioned. There is no place for mysticism in science and making a statement like "some things can't be known" is silly.

If we put the molecule in a strong magnetic field the electron and protons are all oriented in one direction and when the field is removed they return to normal and release radio wave energy. Unique to the electronic environment. The construction of a molecule and all of protons release a radio frequency pattern unique to the molecule. Nmr or MRI imaging.

THIS IS NOT A LIE: When i was young i played yatzy with my sisters, and suddenly i got the urge to try to affect the outcome of the dices and get yatzy (all dices same value) 50 times in a row. AND i MANAGED that 50 times in a row, and not only that, i could determine what value i wanted in my yatzy (meaning sometimes i wanted yatzy in 6's sometimes in 3's etc. I know it is insane, but im not lying. The only reason i could do this is because we live in a kind of fantasyuniverse, where all your good wishes comes true. So if you want to be a scientist and study hard because you so wanna be one, you get to be one, as long as your highly motivated doing it. Its like the universe gives you everything you need for what you need, as long as you convince yourself everything is possible. But the other thing i have noticed is that my brain most of the times work as a computer, like im a sort of AI (artificial intelligence),,but if its god, then god sometimes influence my brain and sometimes my consciousness,,thats how I feel it. To me consciousness and the brain arent synonymous with eachother. To me it seem there is 2 consciousness's,,1 is your own, 1 is god's, then there is your brain (which is your own), then its mind which prolly is god's brain. And sometimes we use gods mind sometimes our own mind which is our brain and sometimes we use our own consciousness (ego consciousness) and sometimes we use god consciousness. AND THIS IS SPOOKY LMAO IF IT IS TRUE THAT IS -.-

Brian Greene at 1:29 gives the most beautiful explanation of our reality, which immediately helped me with my continual and confounding pondering of religion. I personally believe that science holds, or will hold, the answers and explanations to the universe but have always had a difficult time figuring out why people still believe in religion (to put it simply) when science can now explain so much. He has helped me to see how and why you can have both. There are foundational scientific and mathematical equations, the rock bottom, as he puts it, that work toward explaining how our world works, however within our everyday lives, for thousands of years, we operate on different levels of thinking and perspective. A different reality I think he says. It’s like we ‘create’ (no free will) our own world of beauty (he mentions art and poetry and writing), social ideas, cultural norms, and yes, religion. I feel like I’m standing at the edge if the world looking in and it’s totally fascinating.

TIME DILATION IS FULLY EXPLAINED, AS THE ULTIMATE MATHEMATICAL UNIFICATION OF PHYSICS/PHYSICAL EXPERIENCE IS CLEARLY PROVEN: A PHOTON may be placed at the center of what is THE SUN (as A POINT, of course), AS the reduction of SPACE is offset by (or BALANCED with) the speed of light; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY; AS E=MC2 IS F=MA. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy. (The stars AND PLANETS are POINTS in the night sky.) Time DILATION ULTIMATELY proves ON BALANCE that electromagnetism/ENERGY IS GRAVITY, as C4 is a POINT that is ELECTROMAGNETIC/GRAVITATIONAL (ON BALANCE) as SPACE; AS E=mc2 IS F=ma; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Time DILATION proves that electromagnetism/ENERGY IS GRAVITY, AS E=mc2 is DIRECTLY and fundamentally derived from F=ma. E=mc2 IS F=ma. A planet AND a star thus constitute what is A POINT in the night sky. It ALL CLEARLY makes perfect sense. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY. ACCORDINGLY, I have ALSO fully explained the MATHEMATICAL UNIFICATION of Einstein's equations and Maxwell's equations (GIVEN THE ADDITION OF A FOURTH SPATIAL DIMENSION); AS E=mc2 IS F=ma. The Sun AND the Earth are F=ma AND E=mc2. Great. SO, ultimately and truly, TIME is NECESSARILY possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE; AS E=MC2 IS F=ma; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. AGAIN, time DILATION ULTIMATELY proves ON BALANCE that E=MC2 is F=ma; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. Great. Indeed, this NECESSARILY represents, INVOLVES, AND DESCRIBES what is possible/potential AND actual IN BALANCE. (E=mc2 IS F=ma.) Therefore, INSTANTANEITY is thus FUNDAMENTAL to what is the FULL and proper UNDERSTANDING of physics/physical experience; AS E=MC2 IS F=ma; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. SO, GRAVITATIONAL force/ENERGY IS proportional to (or BALANCED with/as) inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE; AS E=MC2 IS F=ma; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Gravity/acceleration involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE, AS E=MC2 IS F=ma; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy is gravity. Accordingly, the rotation of WHAT IS THE MOON matches it's revolution. MOREOVER, a given PLANET (including WHAT IS THE EARTH) sweeps out equal areas in equal times consistent WITH/AS E=MC2, F=MA, AND what is perpetual motion; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. "Mass"/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Gravity AND ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy are linked AND BALANCED opposites, AS E=MC2 IS F=MA; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. GREAT !!! It ALL CLEARLY makes perfect sense. BALANCE and completeness go hand in hand. Very importantly, outer "space" involves full inertia; AND it is fully invisible AND black. E=mc2 IS F=ma. "Mass"/ENERGY involves BALANCED inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE consistent with/as what is BALANCED ELECTROMAGNETIC/gravitational force/ENERGY, AS E=mc2 IS F=ma; AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. (Energy has/involves GRAVITY, AND ENERGY has/involves inertia/INERTIAL RESISTANCE.) E=MC2 IS F=ma. Objects fall at the SAME RATE (neglecting air resistance, of course), AS ELECTROMAGNETISM/ENERGY IS GRAVITY. Gravity IS ELECTROMAGNETISM/energy. E=MC2 IS F=ma. It ALL CLEARLY makes perfect sense. If the universe is infinite, why does everybody think large? Look at the sub basis. How far smaller then electrons and protons can we see? However, you will experience a very long wait until we get to get the answer to everything, and There's only one way that we will know the truth about everything. That's when we reach the end of small. Good luck everybody.

Quantum physics is a branch of knowledge that led humanity to further question the present notion and deeper meaning of reality, including its related concepts such as time, consciousness, and information. Therefore, it has proved once more that human knowledge, as an instrument to beget deeper knowledge of things, has its own limits; because, after after 2,000 years of human endeavor toward this end, since the time of Aristotle, Plato, and Phytagoras, a definite answer regarding the meaning of these concepts have not yet been fully satisfied. I would take it, as an affirmation that religion and science are still of the same and equal .alternative to explain the purpose and meaning of human existence; so that God's revelation (the Bible) could not yet, or should not be excluded in our search for the real meaning and purpose of life.

Why should space, energy/mass, be the only self-existent, eternal stuff. Why not a spectrum of intelligence /consciousness that becomes the manipulator of all else. So, all fall somewhere on an intelligence/ consciousness probability curve. You are what you are and on your own eternal path to increase. You just can't remember until the eternal you moves to the greater existence from whence you came. Millions attest to this greater parallel existence that have gone there and returned or have otherwise tasted, as I have, of the greater reality. (It was for me a stunning, very real and material experience that blows away doubt and removes fear of death.) We in this heavy matter physical earth life body suit, as it were, for the most part have been intentionally blinded to past life in our other lighter matter life body. That light body allows us the senses to experience the light matter realm. This blindness is for wise reasons to have genuine, effectual education for our own increase. The future and past are infinite for us all. All is known, as life and learning have gone on forever. Enjoy eternity!

One thing I don't get is how much can you see thru Math? Because Math is a science of patterns, so if you are looking for a single incident, singularity, how are you going to find it using Math? Single incidents have no Math ! In a coordinate plane many real situations make sense in quadrant 1, let's say if you compare shoes with money point (2,20) means 2 pair of shoes cost $20 , ...but what do you make of point (-2,-20) ? The math is still right, but you can not argue that anytime you said no to buying a pair of shoes, you owed $20 to the store? Math describes many things in our universe but it falls short to articulate a sound argument for origin and purpose, that's what Philosophy and Religion are for, and Greene is up in the air denying purpose ....because math describes some aspects of our world.

What if light multiplyes by 10 in the everage speed of 300000KM/S? cause light is the form that the cosmos comunicate from north to south and viseverse as seen in DNA in a photo found in you tube: DNA PHOTOGRAPHI BY X RAY DIFRACTION. it shows that red spots in the red orbit(the farthest orbit) they entangle oposite sides all crossing same medle center in such a figure that you can find worked out in you tube with the name: THE FLOWER OF LIFE OR DNA DECODED, it contains to much info. when you get to know it well.

I am a big fan of Brian Greene.I want to mention future listeners about some issues that actually are settled but unknown to both of talkers. At least one. About Quantum Entanglement. Quantum Entangled particles is like an inertial web. Or more commonly known as the relativistic web. For example Two photons entangled are in relativistic commutative state. It is like a Complex Zero plus cancelled terms(numbers)for balance. Whenever you take out some cancelled terms (numbers) other cancelled terms(numbers) starts popping out but still could be cancelled no matter how far you take these two Quantum entangled photons. So clearly the strangeness of Quantum Entangled particles lied in our ignorance of This complex zero carrying or transporting inertia of matter through spacetime. Thanks.

If we humans dont think animals like a cow can be conscious we are way out there. Take a look at a video where the farmer let out the cow after the winter/spring time and see how happy those cows are comming out from the farmhouse or whatever its called..id call that conscious moments, THEY ARE HAPPY! and that is an emotion, just like we have, and its even more vivid than our own when we come out after spending wintertime inside. Have you seen humans jumping arround at first summerday like the cows? lol are cows more conscious than us...prolly

those look like ideal chairs for an hours talk. it's good to hear brian agreeing with roger penrose, there might well be a superior being, but i don't see where that gets us. religion ought to stay away from science, science isn't going to help their case and theists just look silly trying to understand the science and trying to squeeze god inbetween the particles. if you believe jesus is your saviour, go with that, people need hope, but just admit the whole thing is entirely in your head. 40:00 the problem is identification, go watch some tjump debates - if you met someone from the past or the future the problem is identifying what qualities would confirm that. tjumps rebuttal of intelligent design is to say, to parallel the "watchmaker" idea, you're walking along a beach and you encounter a tesseract, it's something you've never seen (it can only exist as a concept) but you as no one has seen a tesseract in the flesh before, there is no way to test if it is natural or designed, the only yardstick you have is that we ONLY see human designed stuff, or nature, if you encounter something entirely novel you have to reserve judgement until you have some kind of test. theists need to start taking on board what scientist are saying, these days the theists are becoming more and more unreasonable. 50:00 why not just come out and say it, can we fit god in there somewhere, please....sheesh 1:18:00 did he say anything there? it's a show about nothing.
