The Weirdest Way I've Ever Filmed Bison

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In today's video, we spend the day filming a bison herd at the Crane Trust. We're using an 18-foot camera jib to try and get some unique footage and interesting perspectives. Traditionally, Bison are filmed with telephoto lenses. So we wanted to do something a little different!

I just got back from my third trip to Yellowstone, I love the bison out there and could spend all day walking with the heard. My favorite experience photographing wildlife was with bison when I ended up being surrounded by them and a calf laid down not far from where I was sitting and mom came and laid down between the calf and me and I was just able to get the calf and mom in frame. They stayed there for about a half hour then got up and moved on.

Nice video Stefano! A huge part of the decline in bison was the invasion of North America which saw the settlers slaughter the herds because they knew the natives relied heavily upon the bison for their lifestyle. Very sad. But it's great to see bison coming back.

This is just nuts to me. Found your channel based on your recent video (filming birds in new diy pond) and really liked what I saw. I too am a bird enthusiast, I too build ponds, and I’m currently a grad student in landscape architecture so everything about your channel aligns with my interests (and yes I will be subscribing!). Then I watched a couple more recent videos and finally this one, with the bison. Mostly to try getting an idea where you’re filming out of (which state). And then all of a sudden, Alex Wiles is in this video lol. I know Alex! He and I used to work together long ago as zookeepers in Fresno CA and we’ve more or less kept in touch sense. Totally crazy and unreal to see someone I know but haven’t seen in years just pop up in a video of a new channel I just discovered. Like I mentioned, I’m really digging your content and look forward to watching more of it in the future as the pond and the surrounding vegetation begins to flourish. Keep using the scientific names of the plants you use, it’s a great identification tool for people new to create their own bird, pollinator, and food gardens!

That's awesome! Funny how things work out like that. We visited California a few years back and he took me to the zoo he used to work at. Really neat place. Alex and I are good buddies, we'll definitely be doing some videos together in the future!

amazing results from the jib. how small and unintimidating that front end feels like it really helped keep the herd calm. it really feels different having a wider angle lens shooting up close, especially when they are curious. the big nose shots makes me feel like i'm close enough to hug them.

Glad you're liking the videos! That's great! It all depends on your budget and what your needs are, both in what you're shooting, and how long you intend to keep the rig before upgrading. I don't like to recommend specific models, because it can be quite subjective (what works for me, may not work for you). But either way, I think when you're first starting out, it doesn't hurt to get something on the used market. There's a big used market for DSLRs right now, which could be a good option to get your feet wet and get used to wildlife photography. If you're doing it mostly in your yard, you can probably get away with a shorter focal length, like a 70-300 or 100-400. And if you need a bit more reach, there is also some budget friendly 150-600mm options. If you have some in your area, I highly recommend visiting some camera stores who sell used gear. Sometimes they have a "try before you buy program", which might be a good way for you to try a bunch of different combinations at your price point, and you can see what works best for you and your shooting style. Hope that helps!
