Ойындар
It's time for Weirdness IV: Return of the Weird. This time we're hitting a wide variety of cards from different eras that are weird for many different reasons. These are the truly strange cards that may have slipped past your notice in the past.

It’s funny that a year ago when I watched this we all laughed at Steamflogger Boss’s mechanic.. now a year later and a reprint in Unstable we found a home for Steamflogger Boss lmao
The best rulings on Void Winnower is the last one. Wizards says, and I quote, 'Yes, your opponent can’t even. We know.'
You could say that Void Winnower is a rather ODD card.

HOW IS FUTURE SIGHT THE WORST SET? It is one of the best sets. 1 box of it cost more than your house
@DesolatorMagic

+BenPlaysMC YT Every single card frame is unreadable because it's drastically different with split costs in different bubbles. I've made so many mistakes against these awful cards because of their garbage layout, the entire set should be reprinted or banned. There's an actual rule that if your opponent can't read your card's frame info, it's illegal. They should expand that to all of Future Sight.

Void Winnower's issue was explained: they were trying to make the eldrazi feel weird and odd. so, they played with the word and, initially, the eldrazi cared about odd number. then, they realized it was stupid, and then, Void Winnower was the last remnant of that idea. and there was a pretty food deck called Thragfire/Fogdoor, which gameplan was to lay Thragtusk down and then Worldfire the game. the deck also played like a turbofog deck, with an alternative win condition of flashing Door to Nothingness with Alchemist's Refuge. keep up the good work, and keep up modern Bolts!

Great and entertaining video! I started MTG literally just days ago and came across your channel. I especially like these weirdest cards videos.
Just FYI, there are at least three cards that allow any number of like named cards to be in your deck; you mentioned Relentless Rats and Shadowborn Apostle, but you overlooked Rat Colony. I don't expect anyone to have a complete awareness of all Magic cards, I just happen to have decks built around this mechanic and was aware of the third instance off the top of my head and thought I'd share. Thanks for the entertaining video, it's always a hoot to see a card I use regularly appear in your Weirdest card videos.

Have you ever had an opponent so puzzled when you have a solid green deck and you throw down door to nothingness? It is priceless when you cast Channel the Sunset and make them lose. Priceless
"Don't quote me on that"- DesolatorMagic
the reason the oracle text says "remove those creatures from combat" is to specify that they are no longer blocking the creatures they were originally assigned to block, without this wording the creatures would take damage from all the creatures that each were blocking originally and after the ability resolved. magic has been designed in such a way that wording needs to be specific E.G. if a card doesn't use the word target then it doesn't actually target anything ("you gain x life" cannot be redirected to any target as it doesn't actually target you)

i love how the flavor text for steam flogger boss is "whip the Xs! Pinch the Os! What we're building, no one knows!" perhaps on purpose
Worldfire is such an awesome card. Beautiful art, powerful ability, and great flavor text. I wish it wasn't banned in Commander so I could play it but I understand why.
11:57 In addition to these two, there have been 3 more cards released with this property. "Rat Colony" from Dominaria, "Persistent Petitioners" from Ravnica Allegiance, and "Dragon's Approach" from Strixhaven. Neat.
I pulled a Void Winnower and couldn't stop laughing. The gameshop clerk called it, "The Eldrazi that makes it so your opponents can't even" and ever since I've been calling it that. Definitely worth running just to see the look on people's faces.
On Trickbind: Stifle and Voidslime can both also counter an activated or triggered ability. (Voidslime can counter spells, too.) Additionally, Ayesha Tanaka, Azorius Guildmage, Bind, Brown Ouphe, Interdict, Ouphe Vandals, Rimewind Cryomancer, Rust, Squelch, and Voidmage Husher can all counter activated abilities but not triggered abilities. Trickbind is only unique among this category of cards in that it has Split Second, although the "can't be activated this turn" clause at the end is only shared with Interdict. On Steamflogger Boss: There's actually another Rigger that he can give +1/+0 and haste, other than additional copies of himself. After Steamflogger Boss came out, Moriok Rigger (from Fifth Dawn) was errataed from being a Human Rogue to being a Human Rogue Rigger. On Sorrow's Path: You're simply incorrect in your analysis of the entire concept of Oracle text, this particular card's Oracle text, and how combat works. In particular, there is nothing in the rules to prevent a creature from becoming a blocker (see: Flash Foliage from Dissension). It's even possible to have a creature become blocked without a creature there doing the blocking (see: Choking Vines from Weatherlight, Curtain of Light from Saviors of Kamigawa, Dazzling Beauty from Mirage, and Fog Patch from Nemesis). The rules are, with one exception, telling you what you _can_ do, not what you _can't_ do. The rules give you permission to cast spells from your hand, they don't deny you permission to cast spells from your grave. They give you permission to cast instants whenever you have priority, they don't deny you permission to cast sorceries during any time except your main phase. If a card effect tells you to make creature A block creature B, that happens. Sorrow's Path is still a bad card, of course, but it came from The Dark, so that's not a huge surprise. On Serum Powder: The card is run to allow you to mulligan more times, which is particularly useful for combo decks or decks which are looking for something specific for the early game. For example, Vintage Manaless Dredge often runs multiple Serum Powders to ensure Bazaar of Baghdad is in your opening hand. On Void Winnower: Some of the best removal cards in eternal formats are 1-drops (Path to Exile, Swords to Plowshares, Nature's Claim, Gorilla Shaman, Vandalblast, Vendetta, etc.), and removal in more recent sets tends towards 3 or 5 mana. What Void Winnower really does is slow down curve-toppers (which tend to be around cmc 4 in aggro decks and cmc 6 in midrange or control decks) and get your team past token swarms. Considering he came out in a set full of cards that create Eldrazi Scion tokens, the latter effect is really rather important.
I have the void winnower card and I can't wait to use it! I play at the local game store with a bunch of guys who are practically infamous for the cards they play. One guy plays shenanigans and his entire strategy is to make the game so confusing and complicated that opponents rage-quit, and the other just pulls every trick in the book because he loves to destroy people but gets butt-hurt when someone else pulls the same tricks. I will know that I have reached the pinnacle by how loud I can make either of those two rage-quit. I suggest for review: Thieves Auction, and Sadistic Sacrament.
Since you mentioned Door to Nothingness, you should mention the other win-condition from deck I used to play: Coalition Victory. It's awful to try and make it work but you'll have a story for life.
Oh god, Door to Nothingness! I remember that from the Mirrodin block. Started playing MTGO at the tail end of that block, ended up making this insane Infinite deck that could not only control the board enough to cast this reliably... could untap and pop it the same turn it was played, and recur it if it needed to. The only way to shut down that deck after it got going was to exile it's key stuff, a recursion combo of Myr Retriever, Skeleton Shard and Spawning Pit (I think it was named spawning pit). The deck even used Golden Wish so that it could make use of it's side deck, and charge counter manipulation.
I've won too many Standard games by playing Void Winnower.

I don't know if you were overracting, but I don't get how the oracle text for Sorrow's path is confusing. Logically, in order to do the blocker-shifting portion, you need to a) have the creatures stop blocking whatever they are blocking, and b)block the new stuff. Removing a blocker from combat is magic jargon for (a), so that the blockers won't be damaged by what they were originally blocking. Then the card forces the former blockers to block different creatures. This isn't against the rules; it's just that this wording is only used when you want to move blockers around, and other times when you remove a creature from combat, there was no reason to put it immediately back in combat in a different manner. See the card Balduvian Warlord for another example. If blocker-shifting becomes common enough to warrant a keyword or somesuch, then Sorrow's Path's oracle text will probably be changed to use that instead. Yeah, I guess you probably knew that, but hearing that in the video just unnerved me, I guess.
Serum Powder actually does see play as a 4 of in vintage dredge. Since the entire strategy of the deck is mulligan until you get a Bazaar of Baghdad, the deck can actually make use of the free mulligans and deck thinning
+DesolatorMagic Shield of Kaldra made reference to Helmet of Kaldra which at the time have not come out yet. Creatures with changeling are riggers.
I played magic during mirrodin's first reign of terror, and my fng was dominated by a goblin charbelcher deck that ran 1 land, a ton of affinity, and used serum powders to keep fishing for a turn 1 win combo. Three people built and ran it, and it placed in three of the top four every week until mirrodin rotated out.
If you're not willing to go down to six for finding the card you're looking for, Serum Powder doesn't belong to your deck, because if you get that card with Serum Powder you're basically down to six anyway. It belongs to deck where you absolutely need certain card and you're ready to mulligan down to one to get that card. With 4 of that desired card and 4 of Serum Powders are pretty good. Vintage Dredge uses this strategy for getting Bazaar of Baghdad.
Worldfire has the added bonus of interacting with cards that temporarily exile.
I played Shadowborn Apostles unsleeved on the ground because I didnt think they would ever be a dollar apiece.
4/6 cards from my comment on part 3. I can't tell if you read my comment or we just think a lot of the same cards are weird. I love you're reactions so I'll list some more strange cards I think you should check out. Hellcarver demon, mazes end, godsend, master of cruelties, dark imposter, akromas memorial, and anything from unhinged/unglued. Can't wait to see the next video. In the mean time I'll try to find some more weird cards.
I used 16 Shadowborn Apostle alongside 4 Sire of Insanity and 4 Shrieking Affliction to build a deck in RTR standard iteration that was ridiculous. Never won a tournament, but it was hilarious seeing that idiotic thing hit the field on turn 4-5.
worldfire + thragtusk void winower is hit by path the most common removal spell in modern
do you think serum powder would work in a quest for ula's temple deck?
What's the problem with Void Winnower? Bone Splinters ({B}, reprinted in the same set) deals with it quite easily and there are plenty of other even-costed removals in Standard.
I used to run a Door to Nothingness deck for lulz with my friends. We played before school each morning in basically 4-5 person free for alls, so I crafted a deck focused around defenders and use of the card "axebane guardian" which allows you to tap and gain 1 mana of any color for each defender you have on the field. I actually managed to trigger it a decent bit, and would have people who lost to it sign it because it was just that ridiculous a way to lose.
Serum Powder has a purpose. All Bazaar Dredge really ever needs is Bazaar of Baghdad. They mulligan to 1 single card and if it's Bazaar, they are still in game if they don't get wasted. Serum Powder helps with that as long as they don't need to throw half their engine in their powder mulligan
How to win with Worldfire: use a creature with the suspend mechanic. Play it so it is just exiled until Worldfire goes off then when other players have no lands in play (or one land, but no cards in hand) you get a creature.
Just want to throw out: I played a silly April Fools' Day casual tournament where you were granted a win by making your opponent laugh. So many games ending on the sentence, "I Twiddle my Dingus Egg (or Bone Flute) and Gush."
ok, I'm late to this party, but I am wondering for Worldfire, if you are playing with phasing creatures and play this, your phased creature is considered out of game, so if you play Worldfire with a phased out creature would that creature still come back into play the next turn?
I like the border style of those Future sight cards. Btw, I was not one of the worst set. It introduced Tarmogoyf, Dryad Arbor, Akorma's Memorial, and more strong cards.
What you think about Timeshifter? I love that card, made a deck with it and royally ticked off everyone in the free for all I was playing. it was truly magical!
Just a weird thought...but couldn't Sorrow's Path be used as a trigger for abilities like Enrage from Ixalan set?
Shadowborne apostles, swamps, and ravenous demons. All I need for a good time
Sorrow's Path is even worse than you think. The damage to you and your creatures occurs every time the land becomes tapped, not necessarily because you are using its effect. Any repeatable land tapping mechanism like an Icy Manipulator will mean all of your creatures must be toughness 3 or higher and paying 1 to deal 2 damage to the opponent each turn isn't horrible for your opponent to say the least.

what about worldfire with rift bolt? It is exiled so it isnt affected by the spell. Right?
i love these videos soooooo much, keep it up xD
With worldfire you can give it flash with vedalkan orrery and have a shock or other burn spell on stack
desolator- the trick with worldfire is to have something tawnos's coffin or oblivion ring in play exiling your creature, so when worldfire resolves, it will return your guy.
On Worldfire: you can first use a "exile target until X" card (until end of turn; until this card is removed, ...), or use cheap cards - like those with Suspend
True-name Nemesis is pretty weird, I find it weird to have a non-silver bordered card that reacts to a player in such a way.
A few things: 1) at 1:30~ you said you don't know any other cards that can counter triggered abilities, well: Voidslime and stifle 2) Card rules trump game rules- if a card says"remove from combat, then it blocks" it means they re entered combat, it's really weird I know, but you can't be so daft as to contradict what the card says, if it says the creature is blocking ITS BLOCKING end of argument. 3) future sight gave us a lot of really great cards:Goyf, the pacts, venser and more, calling it one of the worst sets ever made is plain stupid, homelands, the dark, born of the gods, dragon's maze, judging by popularity alone future sight is one of the best sets out there.

1) There is now another card that has identical verbiage to Voidslime, disallow. 2) What on earth are you talking about? Have you not heard of Eratta? And I quote... "Errata are official changes to rules texts on cards, often to clarify card effects or to preserve the effects of cards as the rules of the game change". It is a very well known and accepted fact that the official rules for any magic card are stored in a master document called "Oracle" which is maintained by Wizards of the Coast. In no way, shape or form is the verbiage on the card the final say when it comes to card rulings. Also, on a personal note... the whole "end of argument" statement you made is really arrogant and insulting, as if once you have spoken there is no need for further discussion as clearly you know everything and none of us have anything of value to contribute to the conversation... especially when what you stated was ridiculously wrong. 3) you are taking the creator of this videos words far too literally... Clearly he was speaking in hyperbolas and if you think critically you can clearly tell he was referring to the deviance from the standard card frame design and not the value of each individual card that is within the set... Yes, I do agree with most peoples that this set brought many fantastic cards to the world of Magic, but that doesn't mean that I disagree with the Creator of this video, that the new frame design was confusing, hard to read and limited the ability to print cards with elaborate mana costs (like Khalni Hydra) and so on... There are multiple aspects to future sight you could like or hate... he clearly was talking about the art direction and for whatever reason everyone and their cousin immediately jumped down his throat screaming how great the cards themselves were.
I love your videos and I'm building a chaos rakdos lord of riots edh deck and I'm looking for chaos cards to add that will blow my playgroup out of the water. any advice
Trickbind has a green counterpart. Simply called "Bind" its is a 1G cost instant that counters and activated ability and lets you draw a card. It's pretty good. And killing a Kozilek with Into the Maw of Hell is probably the most satisfying creature removal in the game.
Trickbind is the only card you know that can activated ability or triggered ability? There are TONS of cards that stop triggered abilities. I won't even get into permanents that stop triggered abilities because there are plenty. A few other instants like Void slime, stifle, and time stop can also stop them. Oh and you can't play worldfire in commander because it is banned.
@dsweet5273
8 жыл бұрын
***** I'm sure there are other cards that can do the same thing. Off the top of my head I know timestop could also prevent them from happening. Plus your video didn't say anything about COUNTERING a triggered ability you said STOP a triggered ability. Which is probably why i said "there are tons of cards that STOP triggered abilities" because there are plenty of cards that do that so I didn't feel the need to vaguely describe a number. Great tip on how to use gatherer...maybe use you should use it before making videos just to double check yourself?
Void Winnower was my first mythic rate that I opened. Say what you will, it’s funny to see a table collectively sigh as you play this guy.
Stifle counters triggered abilities, too. In fact, it's seen a lot of play in legacy, but somewhat less so nowadays. Worldfire is banned in EDH. Serum Visions can be used *in addition to taking mulligans*. It says so right on the card. It's been used to great effect in decks that really only need one card to win, in fact. Now, those decks are few and far between, because normally, you need at least two cards to combo, but take Bazaar of Baghdad in Vintage Dredge decks, for example.
Few years later... Cards that counter activated abilities: Disallow Voidslime Summary dismissal Glorious End Time Stop Trickbind Squelch Reroute (in effect) Nimble obstructionist Azorius Guildmage Voidmage Husher
how about the cards with the "epic" ability in the kamigawa block, or any card from that sett aka the myojins
btw, for sorrows path, the creatures accually CAN reenter combat due to the rule that if any card would contradict the rules, the card takes precedence.
@petersmith907

same goes for shadowborn apostle.
I really love how easy it is to abuse Worldfire. Run Red/White, Haste creatures, and Oblivion Ring/Journey to Nowhere or things like that. Everything's fine on it's own, but if you get to late game you can bomb the field and poke for the win with impunity.
since unglued/unhinged cards are almost all lacky perhaps you'd consider a vid of the LEAST weird unset cards. For cards which are vintage legal: try naked singularity/reality twist, lightning storm, head games, takklemaggot, balduvian shaman, panglacial wurm, gemstone caverns, mudhole, grip of chaos, grip of chaos, dryad arbor, evermind, Haakon-Stromgold Scourge, Bridge From Below, Grim Reminder, Lich, Mirror of Fate, Chronatog, Atogatog, Krark's thumb, Brothers Yamazaki, Adventurers' guildhouse et al,wood elemental, camel, false summoning and other portal sorcery counterspells, word of command, mindslaver, donate, death's shadow, spinal parasite, jinxed choker, leveler, upwelling, dead ringers, mistform ultimus, or illusionary mask. Since you mentioned chaos orb/falling star and shahrazad already, how about the ante cards, in particular Amulet of Quoz.
Lol oh god. That Farmstead "translation" got me. I couldn't help but laugh. Same with Sorrow's Path's oracle text. But yeah, back then they had "world enchantments" which were basically equivalent to our normal enchantments. They were just rarer.
Best Worldfire combo: Cast Gut Shot on your opponent, then in response to your own spell cast Quicken, then after Quicken resolves cast Worldfire. Worldfire resolves and eliminates everything and brings everyone to 1, and then finally Gut Shot resolves and kills someone.
There is a new card in SOI called Triskaidekaphobia and it seems so weird for a non-unglued/unhinged card.
There's 4 now. Relentless Rats, Shadowborn Apostle, Rat Colony, and Persistent Petitioners
Man sorrow’s path seems so interesting and fun but holy god the fact it deals 2 damage to each of your creatures is so ridiculously unintuitive since the card is literally just meant to be a combat trick against an opponent who doesn’t see it coming because they didn’t read the text on your land before declaring attacks.
worldfire is banned in commander, and is super good if you have a thragtusk, it gives you a 3/3 beast, as long as it leaves the battlefield, so when it dies from destroy, damage, or sacrifice, if its ever returned to your hand, if its exiled or removed form the game you get the token so worldfire leaves everyone at one life with nothing but your librarians and a 3/3 beast token on your battlefield.
actually worldfire works really well with things that exile stuff temporarily. for example journey to nowhere because when it exiles from worldfire it brings the creature back
Trickbind is the easiest to explain. They printed stifle in scourge to be a way to stop storm combo decks. It didnt work because they could just counter it. So they essentially made a "super uncounterable stifle" Also, voidslime, stifle and bind are the other cards I know of. They may have pribted some since then. And flashfires was in alpha.
Worldfire, Oblivion Ring, Mana Barbs. Play Mana Barbs. Exile it with Oblivion Ring. Cast Worldfire on your next turn. Everything is exiled, including the Ring, so all that's left is two decks and Mana Barbs.
Worldfire is a huge gamble. You're basically betting that you draw a land and the ability to use it for damage before your opponent. The thing is it's a sorcery for 9 mana so you'll have to concede the first chance at drawing land or usable damage to your opponent in all likelihood. Scrying or some sort of deck manipulation will help you but on chance alone I think it favors your opponent. If you're about to lose anyway, it's not the worst gamble ever.
Rigger and contraptions exist in magic they are part of the unstable set which makes that card even funnier because that means it only helps a set that you can't really play with other sets lol
Back in the old days there was no four-of rule, so you could run as many of anything as you wanted. That's why you get cards like Plague Rats.
6:00 Its from unstable, but i guess that wasnt around then?
just a note!!!: 9:40, it's called Pull from Eternity ;). Or eldrazi. 11:00 It's really easy to pull this off: Keldon Marauders or Devil tokens. Any red card that says: "when it leaves the battlefield". Job done.
I've cast worldfire in a commander game. That was great.

Isn't worldfire banned in commander? Maybe I'm thinking of a different card...
Unsummon was changed because when it was originally printed, damage used to go on the stack. Like spells and abilities. So if they didn't say that, you could have your attackers and defendes put damage on the stack, and unsummon in response.
Serum Powder is a great card for combo decks where your combo isn't a single card. There is a Reanimator deck in modern that uses Pull From Eternity as Entomb.
Door to Nothingness: Counter with Willbender. GG
[Squelch] Counter target activated ability, draw a card. Pretty funny to use.
Oracle Text is a great thing and a NEEDED thing. If (old) cards were played with the way they were printed, there would be far more rules headaches. You could also use a different printing of a card to have a different effect. Also, Worldfire is Banned in Commander.
same thing happened with Eye of Ugin - it was released in Worldwake but there was no eldrazi until ROE
My brother and I built a successful Door to Nothingness deck. Every other card (apart from the lands) was there just to protect DtN and us from attack.
Well the timeshifted future sight cards are supposed to be as if they were pulled from a future set, so the missing mechanics make sense
what about that one card that was made standard that was similar to The Cheese Stands Alone?
Golden rule of MTG: If a card contradicts the rules the card takes precedence.
What if you used that one colorless card that can be any creature type as a rigger ?
In regard to Void Winnower aren't creatures also spells? Sorry for being a noob I was just curious about that.
