I love just sitting down for five minutes, doesn't matter where I am, and just letting life flow past me as I listen to this. I think of people I've met, some no longer with me, some happy in their own lives, and some I lost contact with, and can only hope they're doing okay. I always take time to consider other people around me in a wider context and the life path they are on, and it gives me a massive 'yeah life can suck, but overall right now it's all right' kind of feeling. Love and light to everyone reading this

I am 76 and have lived with music all my life and have over 1,000 LP's/CD's starting in the 1950's. Each decade has produced its own stars and Bruce was certainly one of those of the 80's. However I felt that after the 80's the standard started to decline and I have bought virtually nothing since 2000. I feel privileged to have lived in what has been probably the best period in history for popular music.

For a long long time I have thought much the same thing.. But at the age of 55, I no longer play CDs or Vinyl much, yet I am enjoying more music than I ever have….because KZread has it all there, all the great stuff from the beginning of recorded music basically… but what it also has is a lot of music I would never have found before YT came along. It might be great new covers of old classics, or else it might be brand new music being played by the kinds of artists you’ll have never heard of, but they know how to write and play real melodies, not that worthless crap that we hate, churned out by the famous but talentless twerking hacks of today. You just have to delve into all the stuff YT brings up whenever you play a song… It’s just a fantastic new world of endless and practically free music !

There are more divinely-inspired hits in which we can see the beloved Holy Spirit at work, just as we can with Bruce Hornsby. Give them a try, if you do not know them. Let me know if you see what I am on about or not. None of that is to take anything away from the magnificence of many 1970s and 1980s hits. But then The Beatles were 1960s, and the amazing "Ordinary World" from Duran Duran (yes, really) was 1993 - and that is one of the best songs, one of the best pieces of music of any kind, ever produced...

I DO know why ... because the Holy Spirit helped Bruce come up with this immaculate and tremendous piece of art. We can't even say if it is happy, sad, melancholy or ecstatic, for it is all at the same time. It's love and truth (and genius) - precisely what the Holy Spirit is...

@@tommac5924 Yes have seen it, and do like it. I am fairly clear about his motivation, as is he. But I am interested in the mechanism allowing him to give sublime effect to what he felt. That is the miraculous part. We know Bruce is talented, but this piece transcends all the others, and transcends simplistic concepts like happy or sad. That happens when the Holy Spirit swings into action behind us, to give us wisdom, insight, strength and capacity to act... If we do not realise what has happened to us it might be seen as a lost opportunity, though the effect is there anyway. But I did realise when I stopped being "blind", and I'm very grateful for that, so I try to pass on and give back, as with this correspondence to you.

Would they even understand it as music? Does that mean that music - a form of art practised for thousands of years - is still evolving? And if that is true, how is that even possible? One of my many regrets is that I never learned to play music. I tried to learn piano at the age of 9 but the teacher, a ghastly woman who lived above a bar called the Rising Sun (no, really), would beat me for not knowing something or other, so I decided I must be no good and gave it up. If she had not abused me I could probably sit at a piano today and play the intro to this song, just like we see in the first twenty seconds here, and that would make me happier than if I won the Lottery. But she did, and I can't, and that's another reason why paedophilia is wrong.

It also breaks all the audio rules of mid-1980s hit singles - it uses real piano instead of synclavier, there's no big reverb pop on the snare, the bass isn't a fake funk slap-bass synth. It's not "urban dance", it's not "metal ballad", and it's not Hi-NRG. I don't know the story behind the song, but I bet the record company said "oh this will never be a hit single" but put it out anyway just to shut someone up, and then were surprised when it took off.

Growing up in the North of France, this song was very very popular helped me to go through loads of hard times... I dont remember exactly when this song got out, but gosh! This tune would help me to disconnect from anxiety crises caused by daily psychological abuse at home, rejection, self hate, bullying... I was a teenager. It was very difficult to deal with people, family n life in general... On the radio, I would look for the song on every musical station just to find a few pieces of peace and hope for myself... So yeah, that was tough, but bless Mr Hornsby for delivering such a jewel then. He doesnt know, and probably never will, that this tune has sustained me. My english was non-existent, I couldn't even understand a word he was saying, but I knew it got an awesome message somewhere for the bruised child I was. Can't explain... Anyways, thanks for the upload! So much...

The music carries the love and truth of he Holy Spirit. Indeed, the Holy Spirit IS love, mercy and truth. There are a few other pieces of popular music that can do this too, and of course quite a few pieces of classical music. But not everything can do this, only REALLY special pieces. The ones when we do not even know if they are happy or sad. Such differences do not even matter to the beloved Spirit/Paraclete. He can lift us to higher and greater things, as He did me. Now I search out the special music, and the special things it helps people do. Please believe me, having the Spirit does not mean we are taken over, hypnotised, subject to mind control or anything else. We are just the best versions of ourselves we can be, and it is beautiful. I am sorry for you that you suffered, and please accept my sympathy and love for that. I suffered in childhood in several ways too, so I know a little. BUT NOW I AM BEAUTIFUL and STRONG and LOVING because God is with me. With HIm there are NO IMPOSSIBLE THINGS - I KNOW, I really know... So God bless you, God has already blessed you, as you understand the power of the music to help you overcome. Go forward now, and do great and good things with your life.

@@kartiktugnait Tupac built his rap around a sample from this brilliant song. Tupac's lyrics are nihilistic, and, in retrospect, wrong, although they certainly express his personal truth. Hornsby's song was a musical masterpiece, marked by some brilliant piano riffs. It was a song of truth, but also one of hope. Hornsby said "don't you believe it" to the suggestion that some things will never change. Tupac's was one of misery, predicting America couldn't take a black president, which it did, in fact within a few years, and that although things have to change, they probably won't. Bottom line, Hornsby has more *musical* creativity in the first 3 minutes of this song than in any 10 Tupac songs. At this point, the destructive legacy of rap and hip hop is all too clear.

@@JimInNashville Tupac has made a huge cultural impact, has an illustrious career that Hornsby never had. Tupac was more blunt and brutally honest, instead of having naive hope of some Utopian future. Your wrong about the "black president" line, since he wrote this song in the mid 90s, and Obama got elected in 08 he's also half white. Tupac's song was about hope and motivation. That we better start making changes or things will always be like this. Tupac was never about political correctness. Remember, Tupac was also a successful Actor, Poet, and Activists to add on top of really successful hip hop career. You should do your research before making ludicrous claims and absurd assumptions.
