I've been very curious about your set up and really enjoyed this video. We do similar things with our humidifiers(as seen in your past video). I will definitely be taking some tips from this for vacations. It also gave me a little insight for water tolerance and leaving them sit for a little. You've like a few posts on my Instagram and it makes me so happy every time. I don't grow many on windowsill but all are out in the open, on shelves with lights and a humidifier to keep it around 60-65%(run at night only).

I gave up keeping nepenthes a number of years ago because I just couldn't seem to get on top of where I was going wrong & plant's would gradually decline, they would never pitcher, so I got disheartened & got rid of them. Especially after I asked the person I used to buy them from for advice & as soon as I mentioned I'm keeping them as house plant's he said "Well they aren't house plant's, they are tropical so you should be growing them in a greenhouse" & he basically made me feel like I was being foolish even attempting to grow them as house plants, he certainly didn't offer any useful advice to help me grow them more successfully. Then I stumbled across your channel earlier this year & you helped influence me to try again with them. Iv learnt a lot watching you & Iv been using a much crewder version of your sort of set up, filling the humidity tray with tap water (my tap water in London has a TDS of around 235ppm or something crazy so would hurt the plant's for sure!) but raising the pots clear of touching the tap water as best I could think of doing it. Because I'm not confident with how stable my method is I have upturned plastic lids under the pots as added insurance against keeping the water off the bottom of the pot's. I think I'm going to adopt some tips from your set up, using that plastic egg crate stuff you use to make mine safer & more effective but it's nice getting confirmation Iv been thinking along the right lines. I use your exact method as well as a humidifier to supplement the humidity. Ranges with this method are from 55-75% in an area about one third that of the videos. Filling humidifier twice a day is tedious and without it humidity falls to below 50% even with the trays on a dry winters day. I'm planning to get a home humidifier to counteract this for vacations.

Home humidifier like raising the humidity of the whole house? That's probably very good for your health too as humans also need 50% humidity :)

Just a warning using tray.. If happen that you are staying in tropical countries.. The tray with water will breed mosquito.. I used to use tray as I do not want the pots to dry up, but ended mosquito manifested my home.. Therefore, I change using a cotton string that go through the pot underneath, or you can use your cotton clothes and cut out, it work great as well.. get a glass container same size as your pot can fit in from IKEA.. pour in pure water top down from plant pot or just direct into the container.. place the plant pot into the container with the clothes/cotton string inside the water.. it work well for me, and I eliminate the mosquito issue.. at my home, I do not has Rh issue, cos I use auto misting controller.. my RH are kept within 65-95%..the container of water will never evaporate and it just suck up by the plant pot.. 300ml water in container can last me like 2weeks to 3weeks

Yes mosquitoes... another 'cons'. I never experienced that where I live but I can see it happening in warm places.

Thank you for another very helpful video! I like that you show your results with data collection, which helps prove the validity of your tips. I'm growing several intermediate nepenthes on my windowsill in CT, USA and I'm currently using your tray method, except with more shallow humidity trays commonly used in bonsai (just for now because they're cheaper), but I still have about 1-2cm of water in each tray . I wonder how much the depth of the tray affects the humidity.

Nice, thanks. I use Cups+Trays for Dionae - tap water in the tray if I'm away. I'm just starting with Nepenthes but there I use Sphagnum in the trays and the Nep pots are risen 3-4mm so all the water in excess will get absorbed by the sphagnum..... I mist both twice a day... There is less evaporation with the sphagnum, a lot of local humidity, and a very nice smell!!

Nice video. It works perfectly for going on vacation. Another con I have had is green slime growing in the tray then drying and you have to scrape it off. The exception to the rule is N ampullaria and N raffalesiana. I grow mine like Sarracenia. They want to be in an inch of water. That's when they pitcher best. They don't like it dry. They do better in water than out of it.

I have 2 ampullaria crosses and will give this a try. The medium sized plants only keep 1 or 2 pitchers at a time atm while watered twice a week.

@@ErenJaeger87163 Hey good luck. I'm in Fl and was growing my raffs outside and they weren't doing anything until the rainy season came. It would rain everyday and their pots were constantly soaked. I used the vacation method on my amps when I went away and when I came back they were doing better than when I kept them dry. I found out from a grower in Philippines I think that grows them in shallow water and says they do best this way. It's been working for me.

I learned a lot from ur vid I live in ca the Bay Area it’s on the cooler weather side but it doesn’t freeze here so built a bog in my front yard I planted Venus and other carnivores plant but no nap I don’t think they will make out side but I want to set some up in side great videos

Create a solar powered running water like the idea of hydroponics for me that way you don’t have to water the tray every now and then just a suggestion thats what I’m doing on my outdoor setup… hopefully i can make a video like yours so i can share mine too…

Hi ! personally I put my pots on pine bark with below a geotextile constantly supplied with water (with an irrigation system) and still below the white grid !

This is helpful just thinking about a pebble tray but, I've liberated my windowsills and now using an IKEA greenhouse to allow me to control humidity and light for my nepenthes. Have been considering a tray of sphagnum moss too but, not looked into whether that's viable..

@@WindowsillNepenthes think I found the correct video, I'm going to give the sphagnum tray a whirl. Might save me having to invest in a humidifier for them hopefully and already having sphagnum for my nepenthes saves money too.

Good tip about the crate, I will get some to try! Do you have any pots that have undecaying wick in the bottom into the tray? That way the pots would be self watering as long as you have water in them. And is there a reason you are not growing more spaghnum on this crate in your trays?

You are full of good question 😄 I don't have this kind of pot, never tried. And I don't grow sphagnum in these trays because it would grow very slow compare with the trays with lids. But that could be doable.

@@WindowsillNepenthes all you need is some thick 100% nylon thread and insert into the bottom of your own pots. I bought a few meters of it for €3,- or so. Only use it for the ones that don’t mind a bit more wet or up the perlite % in any pots you are using with it :)

All of my Nepenthes are intermediate species. Some will be almost LL or HL, this way I have pitchers all year round. But most are intermediate-HL

I use the tray method but I use rocks instead of the white rack you use.

Raising the humidity inside your house can cause problems. Not for your plants, but for your house. High humidity can make wallpaper peel, make wood swell, and make metal objects rust. It makes your heating and cooling have to work harder, which raises your energy bills. It makes mold and mildew more likely to grow inside the house. Something to think about.

Do you think I could put pebbles in a tray, put the distilled water in, then put the plant on top? And does it matter which pebbles I use incase it gets minerals in the water?

If the pot sit on the dry pebbles, you can even use regular tap water (as minerals don't evaporate). As long as the pot can't "drink" the water, it's good ;)

I have a large 4‘ x 2‘ terrarium and I use mall dishes for each nepenthes pot. But I have been trying to think of a way that it will water automatically water and drain automatically without making a big mess. I also ordered a grow tent and I have two other enclosed grow cabinets that offer only direct light.

Do you remember where you got those trays? I can‘t find ones similar to yours… Not even on Amazon… auf anyone has an idea where i could find something that would be very helpful. I wanna use them to propagate some sphagnum like Remy showed in another video.

Not that I know of. Egg crate is fragile and break easy so the delivery isn't easy. But if you really want things on Amazon, you can try some "Aquarium Divider Trays" maybe? You can also use lava rocks.

@@alexandresupinski5389 go to whatever the equivalent of lowes or home depot is in your part of Europe. Ask for egg crate lighting. It is very common for use with flourescent bulbs. They should have it!

I spray the leaves only once a week to fertilize, but I spray the moss every day to keep it alive. Are you saying you keep your pots in water once a week? Like bottom watering?

@@danielkenjimuramatsu1955 For letting Nepenthes sitting in water, that's possible only for some lowlander... and that can quickly go wrong so I don't recommend that. For hanging pots, I never tried... it's just not my stuff as you need to water more. But check my interview of a French guy as he talked about it at the beginning.

What if you just added 3L (3Q) to each 1020 tray? The pots will absorb the water and the pots will soon be out of the water again. Oui?

@@WindowsillNepenthes How about just pouring in enough water into the 1020 tray to cover the egg crate plus 1cm? Calculating the volume needed is easy. 1020 tray 10” x 20” x 1” deep=200 ÷ 231 is approximately 3 liters or about 3 quarts. 1 gallon maybe be too much water. I have certain plants that I just flood the trays.
