✂️ The 2 ways to remove Nepenthes Basal shoots (6 month update after cutting them)

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

There is 2 ways to remove Nepenthes Basal shoots.
Cutting the basal or cutting the main stem.
Keep in mind that this video was filmed in February so Gaya is slow (it doesn't like cold) and ventri-hamata is fast and enjoy cold nights.

    I really enjoyed this video. Yeah, I like cutting the stem to give energy to the basal. It's good to make cuttings and keep extra for yourself too in case you lose the mother plant for some reason. I've had that heart break before. So don't sell everything. Always keep one for yourself. Give to close neighbors or co workers too because they can help you get your plant back in the future if you need to. I was lucky this way with my red leopard. Your plants look great. I lvoe seeing the snow outside your windows.

    If Nepenthes' pitchers size is always consistently getting larger, then is a plant that continually puts out small ones a clear sign of some minor stress?

  • @WindowsillNepenthes

    @WindowsillNepenthes

    2 жыл бұрын

    If the pitcher "should be bigger" (depending of the species) then yes something is needed. Usually light and if not, humidity. Keep in mind that right now, my n. Gaya is making smaller pitchers because nights are too cold for it, but in a few month it will be better. If not I'll search why. ;)

    Your video was very timely. A couple of days ago, I cut (I was worried about this cut) about a two foot vine with huge leaves off from my Nepenthes Sanguinea. The plant has four fairly large basal shoots, so I decided to let the main root system put the energy into those four shoots. I did this cut because the vine was growing like mad but not producing pitchers. I am hoping this procedure will cause the basals to produce new pitchers. The plant is currently under a 150 watt (output) CFL in order to survive the Michigan winter. Anyway, I guess I will find out what the effect of this cut turns out to be.

    @@origamisensei798 The plant(s) is extremely large in the pot as the basals all grew much larger. There were quite a few large traps (about 6") this summer that formed during the hot days. Actually, at this point, I am thinking the plant is really too big and probably should be split up into several separate pots. However, I don't want any more Neps. I now have 3 150watt output CFLs hanging over my pot of Sanguinea and St. Gaya which is also huge. These plants really can put on size, that is for sure.

    I wish you would have done them the other way around lol. I’m thinking off chopping and rooting the main stem of my Gaya to let the basals keep the main root system. I’m planning on bagging it while it roots but does the pot need to sit in water while this is happening ? Since it won’t have roots they won’t rot right? Or will the humidity from the bag be enough to keep the soil moist enough? I hope this makes sense. Thx Remy and keep up the good work.

  • @WindowsillNepenthes

    @WindowsillNepenthes

    Yes, you can root a stem into water with bright light (not sun). Just change the water once a week so it don't grow algae ;) Then, when the roots are 1 cm (1/2 inch) you gently pot it in loose substrate. ;)

  • @WindowsillNepenthes

    @WindowsillNepenthes

    2 жыл бұрын

    If the main growth point is broken or dead, the plant will activate a side shoot by activating a dormant nod on the stem. Could also generate a basal. But as long as the plant is alive with good light it should recover ;)

    If you use the artificial light then you can cover it with a dome but if you use the sun then do not cover and just keep the substrate is wet. But in principle, the young plant has the same needs of the mother plant.
