The Ultimate Nepenthes Basal Guide

This is our comprehensive guide on separating basal offshoots from Nepenthes tropical pitcher plants.
We cover how to identify when it's time to remove a Nepenthes basal offshoot, and how to safely transplant them.
The video only covers the methodology we use in our specific conditions. We can try to answer questions about other conditions in the comments section.

    I just want to say that this method worked really well for me and my Nepenthes Sanguinea. The only thing I would add is that unless your cuttings are going to be in very high humidity, probably 80%+, I'd put them in a plastic bag to ensure they don't lose a lot of water before they can grow a big root system. I cut four basal shoots off my big plant and after about 5 weeks all have grown many small roots and each has unfurled a new leaf that is smaller than they were before but look very healthy. Thank you Predatory Plants and I hope this helps anyone else that is looking for advice!

    Thanks so much for the video. I have a large Nepenthes Sanguinea and my parrot bit the top growth off :(. It responded by putting our four basal shoots! The top is nearly recovered and I want to take at least three of them off as they have all put out 2-3 pitchers now. Hopefully, the big plant will be up and running again fast as ever and I'll have 3 others :D. The fourth one just sprouted a few days ago so I'm going to need to give it some time still.

    Glad you enjoyed it. Pygmy sundews are interesting. I don't actually have any experience repotting them, since I treat them like annuals. Each year I harvest the gemmae and sow them on new soil. The old plants might come back to life the following growing season, but if they don't I just discard the whole pot. Devon does a lot more work with sundews than I do, so if he has any insight we will add that to our list of videos to make.

Their youngest leaves have about 10-14cm, but they still have no pitchers and few leaves (two mature leaves each). Should I take them off? I would really like to so I can propagate my plant and they don't leach nutrients from the main plant, but I'm afraid they won't make it since they have so few leaves

    I’ve noticed my basil plant is struggling a little bit. I separated the parent plant from them, and the basil plant have the roots from the parent. All the conditions are fine, right light right humidity. The leaves of the basils are growing just fine, but growing smaller and smaller pitchers. I’ve sprayed them with a diluted dose of Maxsea fertilizer once a month. I thought when you separate the basils from the parent and the basils have the roots of the parent plant that the size of the pitchers skyrocket so I don’t know what to do

    I almost never bag basals. Their strike rate is so close to 100%, that I would only even bother if it was on the weak side or a super rare/valuable plant. If it was growing well in your conditions, it should be just fine striking in those same conditions.

    My Nepenthes has been growing in my hothouse for about 6 months and doing very well. We live in a sub tropical part of South Africa .Durban with good humidity. It has grown a 600mm vine with an abundance of pitchers, also has many pitchers on the main plant perhaps 15 or so. It has now produced two new basal shoots at the base with small pitchers. The leaves are bright green and firm. Suddenly the pitchers have started browning and I have no idea why. We had a few cold snaps this winter down to perhaps 7 or 8 degrees centigrade at night, and I wonder if this could be the cause. What do I do ????? Derrick Harvey.

But there is a basil shoot coming out of on almost every node on it, and all of them look super healthy! Since the plant is so small I dont want to pull any off. Is it hurting the main plant? Should I remove the little basils to help the main stem or just let them grow?

  • @PredatoryPlants

    @PredatoryPlants

    That behavior in rajah is usually due to poor tissue-culture procedure causing over-activation of basal offshoots. It's best to just let the plant settle-in and put energy into whichever offshoots it chooses. the rest will probably die-off.

    A 6 bulb t-5 rig puts out a lot of lumens, so you probably don't have to be right on-top of the plants. The plants will also let you know if you watch them closely. If they produce extremely compact and colorful growth, the light level is good. If they stay pale-green and stretch-out their leaves, you should try to move them closer. However, we don't have much experience with indoor growing, so you should try to find a better source for information on that.

    Question, some of my basal shoots are wilting pretty bad after being cut and re-potted a week later. Is this normal? Is there something I should do? I cut them as far down as I could go, I took the large plant out and cut them right where they grew into the roots essentially. Each basal shoot I cut had at least 4 leaves and one pitcher. Thanks for any advice.

  • @PredatoryPlants

    @PredatoryPlants

    5 жыл бұрын

    If your basals are wilting then they are shedding more water through respiration than they are uptaking from their stems/whatever roots they have left. You can try to either reduce the amount they respire (for example by boosting humidity with a dome or a plastic bag over the plant), or increase their water uptake (such as by watering them more heavily, or even setting them in a tray of water until the roots grow in more).
