The Mavericks were eliminated in the Western Conference Finals but this season was a huge step forward. Luka Doncic led them to wins over the Jazz and the Suns - both the number one seed the last two seasons - but there were some red flags that need to fixing. This is a look at how Golden State exposed Luka and what he needs to do next.

Bird wasn't a 1-way player. He was one of the best D-Rebounders of the era, and was not a poor defender until after the back injury. Bird was on 3 All Defense teams.

Luka is actually a really solid rebounder but his defense is obviously a problem. That being said if Dallas had a Center literally ANY Center that could protect the rim even a little bit it would really cover up Luka's weakness which is players blowing past him and getting to the lane. Luka's actually decent in other areas of defense he just doesn't have the lateral quickness to keep up with NBA players, this looks insanely bad when Dallas doesn't even have anyone in the paint to attempt to protect it or cover up the weakest point in Luka's D. Luka tied for 3rd place in playoffs with 1.8 steals per game and had 0.6 blocks per game.

In fairness, all six of those losses were against superior competition. I do agree with the overall premise however, but both Lebron and Jordan were super high usage rate players until they got more help around them. Luka just needs a legit co-star like every other great player did. Unlike Harden, I completely trust Luka's competitive spirit. He is out there playing to win and wants to dominate his opponent. I never felt that from Harden at any point in his career.

Luka doesn't move or do anything on the offensive end when he doesn't have the ball. Nobody saying he has to be on Steph's level but go back and watch film sometimes he barely crosses half court if he doesn't have the ball. The biggest problem with Luka is all his energy goes into on ball, when he's off ball or playing defense he's an absolute non factor, that could be conditioning or just his mindset or he just may not have the physical capabilities to do it at the highest level I don't know.

It's really the Mavs that were exposed. Outside of Luka they aren't a very talented team and had a very short bench without Hardaway. For many of the players this was a good experience as they now know that they need to elevate their games during the playoffs. While Luka had some sickening usage rates the better his teammates played the less he tried to score. It was really in the games where the Mavs were struggling (and in most cases lost) that Luka went into full scoring mode.

A lot of people have already made great responses to this video saying that you’re being too harsh and unrealistic. The James Harden comparisons are honestly laughable to me because James is nowhere near the competitor that Luka is. Not only that, Luka and Harden actually approach the game differently. When Harden was in MVP mode, getting assists was more of an individual achievement to him than it was for the team, there’s a big difference there. I agree however that it is very hard to win championships when your team relies on one player to do everything on offence. Don’t forget though that a lot of players have been in this boat before when they didn’t have adequate talent and a good enough system in place to compete for championships. I also think that people who question whether or not Luka can adapt his game to a more “team-oriented” style of basketball shouldn’t have opinions worth listening to (the man’s basketball foundations are European…). Like I mentioned before, Luka does play “team-oriented” basketball. The only problem is you can’t trust anyone outside of Spencer to create their own shot (Brunson is way too inconsistent). Therefore, most of the looks the ‘others’ will get are off passes from Luka, and while he generates a wild number of open looks that can win games, that can only happen if the ‘others’ are knocking them down. I think what Dallas needs to do is actually make a variation of Golden State’s system for Luka. That way he can still have a ~35% usage rate while others have the ability to hit shots off of passes and create their own shots. I’m a firm believer that Dallas need other capable playmakers among other things around Luka like Jusuf Nurkić, Bogdan Bogdanović (maybe Nikola Jović if they can draft him) etc. Dynamic 2-way players in a system like that would have the potential to get even better and with Luka at the helm, that would be pretty scary. Luka will be a champion before Jordan and he’ll have more opportunities to win championships so long as the Dallas front office do their homework and the coaching staff utilise that talent properly. Luka has always been a winner and winning is more important to him than individual awards are.

Great take - everything on point - I think this is the best team for Gobert and Gobert is the best thing for Luka. Obviously, his contract is insane, but if they can trade some contracts (pick 3 out of the Bertans, Hardaway Jr, Dinwiddie and Powell), they can fit very well. I think having the better tier guys is either non-realistic (Ayton), bad fit (Beal) or worse option (Simmons and Grant). If they can get Ayton, it would be insane

Great video! The only thing I have to question is the characterization of Bird and Steph as 1-way superstars. Neither are defensive stoppers, but that has more to do with their physical limitations than their effort or interest in defense. Bird was just slow and plodding and Curry is just relatively small, so teams like to try to pick on him. Both put the effort in on the defensive end and contribute to their team's defensive scheme. That is completely different than a Westbrook that has all the physical gifts to be a great defender, but has never made defense a point of pride. Luka doesn't have the physical gifts to be a lockdown defender, but he has a LOT of room for improvement. Defense is about effort, so which way is he going to go? The way of Bird and Steph or the way of Hardin and Westbrook?

Luka doesn't have a Scottie Pippen or a Dennis Rodman, Luka still definitely needs another All-Star player to help him to be honest. Luka's next best player is Brunson and he is a role player. Dalllas has a great Coach they just need to get more help for Luka but I could not agree more with you that Luka is lazy on defense and his team mates like Bullock, Finney-Smith, and other play harder on defense so they are gased on offense. Compared to Luka who uses all his energy toward playing with the ball on offense. Also like you said Luka can play good defense when he wants to, but at the end of the day the Dallas Mavs need to get Luka some help and not Dinwiddie.

Now as an unbiased fan of the NBA, theres 4 guys that I think are realistic targets that could work really well in Dallas. Zach Lavine/Bradley Beal, 2 SG's that can score almost at will, can really take pressure off of Luka on offense. Julius Randle, coming off a down year, probably won't take much to get him, and I'm interested to see what he can do with a player of Luka's caliber. And Christian Wood, who I believe can be a 20/10 guy on great efficiency if he's given a great playmaker to work with.

(Apologies if you're a Dallas fan btw) But the front office still fail to surround him with adequate talent, despite him carrying the team to at least the playoffs for the last 3 years. You expect him to magically carve his way past one of the most star studded teams in the best league in the world all by himself? Nah. That is ridiculous This isn't on him, he's carrying the Mavs and doing his part. It's on the front office to do their part. Make some trades and get him the help he needs. Otherwise, I wouldn't be surprised if Luka is gone soon enough

@@AMHoops common man you cant blame luka. the mavericks had no bench all year and is why they lost, no bench production means when your starters rest you get outscored.

Bird was all defensive 2nd team for 2 chips and still good for his 3rd.
