The Warrior Women of Vietnam

Despite being extremely tired of filming, while waiting for the flights home we decided to add one Vietnam video to our SE Asia journey. This is on heroism, and the women who died for Vietnam.

Everything from the filming to the philosophy of the series is really well made, and seemingly with heart. I've been to most of the countries mentioned in your series so far, from what I can tell you've truly captured the essence of every location. The International Fixed Calendar is great. I actually came up with it on my own when I decided I wanted to come up with a calendar system that maximized the number of times the 13th of a month landed on a Friday, just to screw with superstitious people. Turns out if you have the IFC start on a Sunday and have New Years and Leap Day not counted during the normal Sunday-Saturday system, every month from January to Smarch has a Friday the 13th.

If Vietnam wasn't as sparsely populated as Tibet or Xinjiang, it would surely be part of China. Really, its surprising to me it's not. The Han have conquered various others, of which are now core parts of China and will likely never be independent- Many probably don't even care to try. Xinjiang, Tibet, Manchuria, and Inner Mongolia all have vastly different cultures from China in the same way that Vietnam does- Hell, Vietnam is much more similar to china than some that I listed. Most of its history was spent as part of China, never having the same kind of independence places like Korea did. It's really interesting out of all of the places, Vietnam was the most successful in remaining independent

I cannot speak for other countries but as for Vietnam, though they were forced to be a part of China, they tried to refrained from being assimilated. Throughout Vietnam's history, there were various rebels and wars against the intruders from the North. They even invented their own writing system to preserve the Vietnamese culture and to confuse the Chinese. So no, it was not surprising that Vietnam is an independent country now.

A truly secular and non-colonialist calendar would have to get rid of the Roman calendar altogether. "CE/BCE" is like renaming inches to "standard distance units" while keeping the whole imperial system. It's pointless and half-hearted. Let's switch to a historical equivalent of Metric already, and start making actual sense.

I feel ya. I’m not particularly religious myself, but I feel like I get beaten up every time I mention religion if I forget the required put down of religion.

The part that you said vn was dominated for 2000 years and was independent for around 2 hundred years before the French came is wrong. Vn was dominated for just shy of 1000 years and has had 1000 years of self governance and lasted through 10 Chinese invasions by the time the French came. And even in those 1000 former years there were constant rebellion.

TheOwlOfTruth yeah that’s my issue with BCE and CE, the point that distinguishes the Common Era from before is no less religious, now we just have a more cumbersome way to talk about these dates, and this isn’t coming from someone who’s religious.

In a way it is like saying "happy holidays" instead of "merry christmas". It is kind of nice but also kind of futile to attempt to hide which culture put its stamp on it.

Yeah, but the roman calendar is a colonialist symbol that means very little to people who aren't roman. I mean, the traditional chinese or indian calendars have a lot more native users, we should be using those as the international standard if we absolutely must use a pre-existing one.

I love your videos about these stories that no one thinks very much of or even about. But I always feel these vids are sometimes dramatic not overly so but shouldn't the story speak for itself. In this video the start wasn't dramatic rather it was light.

As a general rule, in Vietnamese, a single "word" (as separated by a space) is always one syllable. They kinda fudge this sometimes (e.g. with "Việt", which is pronounced closer to one syllable than the two very distinct syllables most westerners say it as, but still seems to usually have two syllables even in Vietnamese), but for the most part it's true. Hence "Việt Nam" as two words.
