How to Save an Island

Belize! I went on vacation to an island paradise with some friends, but of course couldn't help but make an episode.
It's another video without Francesco, but luckily this time I had the help of some high school students: Preston Smith and Aldair Rosato. Thanks, guys! I appreciate you joining me on this mini-adventure.

I've been unable to find Aldair's channel, but I'll fire him an email and update when I know.
The music for this video was graciously provided by Kevin MacLeod at incompetech.com. It is Creative Commons, and he is no doubt unaware we're using it, but hey. I still think he's great for letting it happen.

Okay, being so fucking early I just wanna say that Rare Earth as a channel completely changed my view on some things and inspired me to think of stuff I probably wouldn't ever have paid attention to. Thanks for doing what you're doing Evan, your work is amazing and starting to watch this channel was a great decision.

When the Main Stream Media went from traveling news reporters and corespondents to following tweets, this was lost. I'm so glad Rare Earth is here to give us glimpses of the world and show us, most people are like each other. Passionate about what they hold dear, opinionated, flawed, and trying to do better where they are.

Not true. It's like people 5000 years ago lived the same lives as their ancestors did 10000 and even 100000 years ago. Now of course everything changes at a breakneck speed and every new generation faces new challenges that nobody before them could have imagined. Even 1000 years ago, when tech and population growth were more or less at a stationary phase, a few generations could have lived in the same conditions, but now... forget it. My point is that the trend that every generation is so much different from their predecessors is a SUPER resent development.

@@anatolyrozhkov851 - Not really. I get the point you're trying to make, but human anthropology almost definitively shows all the hallmarks of this in virtually every society since Sumer. It even happens on a fairly predictable basis in which some major changes appear to cycle every 20 years, another type of cycle every 40-60, etc. Even up to the 400 year cycles that some conspiracy theorists run with. Societies seem to run on a cyclical nature of rebound and response with some being driven by the various age ranges that intermingle within it. It's why we often see simple things like fashion and political zest going in and out fashion. These are oftentimes tangentially connected to the deeper whims echoing over those greater timescales.

I went to Caye Caulker 4 years ago... it warms my heart to hear its still doing well. When I went, it was with a bunch of other tourists, most of them strangers. I didn't feel comfortable enough to really engage and enjoy the locals and location, while being forced to stick with my tour group. But seeing it all again through this screen... it brings to mind how much I actually liked my time there. My issues stemmed from my tour group, not the island, and I'm glad I get to see it again here.

Great job Preston and Aldair! The video was awesome! Keep it up! And thanks to all the Joanies and Heidis out there. Mine go by different names, but they were no less foundational in shaping my life. By no fault of their own, my family was ill-equipped to support me in pursuing what I was passionate about. The Joanies and Heidis were the ones that helped me have a fighting chance and make it happen. From the more inspirational teachings to the less sexy but crucial "technical" aspects of navigating the world, they're the ones that nudged me forward. I owe them more than I'll ever be able to repay. It may be just a drop in the water and may not seem like much in comparison to lofty ideals like "changing the world" or "leaving the world a better place", but they certainly changed me and made my life better. For that I am grateful. And of course, thanks to the ever-courageous ugly-shirt-wearing master of puns (you better belize it...that takes some serious balls to put that one out there!^^) for the great content. KZread is certainly a better place with you on it.

I've often wondered if parents aren't teaching their children the things that they used to, nowadays, and if it's having a negative effect. Not just things like, you know, The Talk. More important that, things school (new mom and dad) don't teach nearly as well, like how to take care of yourself after school, how to learn on your own, how to even meet people eye to eye and have a conversation. I wasn't taught these things, and had to figure them out years later, and to a degree I blame the loud busy-ness of more modern times keeping everyone too distracted. Food for thought.

I think it's also important to note how much more our generation has to work because of how little money we make compared to the cost of living. It's a lot easier to be charitable when you don't live below the poverty line, and no one I know lives above it. I don't think anyone would expect someone to volunteer 10 hours of their time each week when they are already working 40 hours a week to support themselves and going to school full time as well. Older generations love to look down on us for the lot in life that their generation pushed on us.

Funny how popularity of name's change over time. I don't know whether Heidi was all that popular when I was a kid, but certainly not all that rare. Heck, Helen and Ellen were very popular, but no longer. My own name, Steven, was super popular, but now I saw it at 100 of the top 100, so not rare but not nearly as popular.

Wow! What a great piece, and on vacation no less! I'm really impressed with the whole story and the twist towards the end (the camera work being done by two Ocean Academy students) was terrific. I'm guessing you got one or two (or three) questions from your apprentice cameramen about making documentary videos . . . :) It's obvious that these dedicated teachers know exactly what they need to do to provide the students with the education that they need, not just tick the boxes on some bureaucratic list of requirements. I hope this piece generates a bit of support for the Academy. As long as there are people like Heidi and Joanie and their students (as well as yourself to educate us about them) there is hope for this world.

As the saying goes, "It's not work if you're doing what you love." I probably would have never known that the places in your videos exist, if not for your videos. Your videos don't make make me feel like I'm being "talked at". They make people feel like they're the camera, listening to our friend Evan as he talks about a place or an idea, or an obscure piece of history or culture. About the "mic issues", as long as they're audible and can be understood pretty clearly, maybe leave the audio as is. To me, it makes the interviews more "real", like the viewer is sitting across the table from them, having a person to person conversation. Thank you to all the people behind Rare Earth. You all are awesome.

I see the brilliance and passion of young people trying to make the world a better, more just, place. But it isn't in the old stream media, from which I am now totally divorced, but in their refusal to work for companies who are polluters or have problems with workplace quality or bad environmental policies. It is slower than we would like, but companies are having to change because they can't get good workers because good workers are placing a higher value on personal fulfillment and social justice.

Great as always. I feel that giving something to the world, helping people in general, is just something most people should strive to do. It just feels fantastic and its obviously not only good for yourself. I only feel that there's too little opportunities seen by the vast majority of people to actually do something useful and rewarding. Also most volunteer systems require you to actually pay for helping, which just makes no sense at all. I understand its voluntary but still... I totally understand not getting paid, but thats just a sign that those "charities" want your money... (talking about specific ones)

Dickson Huang We aim to tell the opposite of the common stereotype. People have Disney views of Japan, so we show harder side of life. People have negative views of Central America, so we show positive. It isn't a hard and fast rule, but it might explain why on a vacation I made a video that was softer. Given my last video was a diatribe on Guantanamo detention centre, I'd say it is hard to argue it is a common thing.

In 2006, when I decided to 'give back' to the next generation, my income dropped by 80% and my free time vanished by the same percentage. Nonetheless, over the next ten years, I made a difference... outreach talks to the elderly, teaching grad students about the moons of Mars, mentoring kids on how to build their own spacecraft (launching tomorrow morning BTW) -- and lots on how to design and market innovative and genuinely beneficial products. But as much I felt a sense of hope for individuals under my wing -- after nearly a dozen years, I came to see less and less hope for humanity as a whole. I still 'give back' -- but not so much anymore. I still care. But for the sake for my sanity, I finally accept that making the world a better place is an exhausting process with little more than fleeting results.

Is the name of Adair's KZread channel Romeo 1? I couldn't understand what he said and it didn't show up on my subtitles. Does anyone know?

Yes. Click the 'video' button and scroll down to the first episode -- you'll see them together talking about their hopes for the series.

We also can't be afraid to let younger generations volunteer! It's almost impossible for a young person (under 16) to volunteer due to concerns over litigation.

Wanna know why the new generation isn't as charitable? Because we don't have any money for ourselves, let alone to give to others!

Not referring to anyone specifically, but I find that many people that say they don't have money, don't have money because they spent it all, not because they are poor. Plenty of money for liquor and eating out, but no time or money to help any causes. Have been volunteering a lot these last years and I had to go without things myself, but was able to help others with their future. We all have different perspectives and goals. Having a bigger purpose was helpful for me to find a better balance in life.
