As an air rb player with 2k hours I can say that positioning and movement are extremely important in air battles as well

I used to completely suck at air RB. Then, I started paying attention to positioning and navigation. I increased my K/D from about 0.5 to 1.8 within a matter of days. I knew how to fly, maneuver and aim yet without proper positioning all of this was useless.

Another tip to avoid CAS is to hide in the shadows. I cant tell you how many times hiding in a shadow saved my butt

@@vitaliyk1990 If i recall correctly some of the shadows are baked into the terrain texture when high up in a plane so even ULQ doesnt get rid of the dark spots on the maps.

Im so glad somebody finally talked about these things and explains it well, i especially utilize dead space whenever i can and it can lead to really good turkey shoots sometimes. I used to play a game called Day of Defeat with a group called the 506th PIR which was a realism dedicated clan so to speak. That is a prelude to the story of my civilian live for taking military training and qualification courses for everything I could imagine. But during my play time with the 506 I learned about enfilade, defilade, proper covering fire, cavalry scouting tactics and techniques used during WWII and even a ton of jargon and terminology that stuck so well sometimes people mistake me for a vet when I talk to some of my friends in said slang language. Like us discussing a cod lobby in which I used some anti perosnelle mines and hotel echo to drop a squad, before calling in CAS and it resulting in a victory. But I digress, I encourage everyone to join or at least play around with joining mil sim groups, if you are at all serious about using real world tactics in games to make the best of your advantages that you can, and avoid dangerous situations and kill zones.

I'm a former 12B Sapper and while I get fire and maneuver techniques, my grunt training doesn't apply as well to AV combat. I subbed immediately upon learning you're a 19D. I need all the effective help I can get. Glad you're home, brother. Hooah.

One of the few guides of war thunder that doesnt cover the same few tips of just "use binoculars lol" and "dont just stand out in the open". Pretty much every war thunder guide feels like its for absolute beginners and while I had already internalized most of this knowledge, this gives a great way of increasing my understanding of why what I'm doing works and the terminology used to explain it

Another tip thats especially important in city map and CQC, do not do the WoT wiggle. That engine revving will alert everyone nearby and annoy your teammates who's trying to listen for enemy engines

It can save your life sometimes though, i have bounced several panther shots with an IS-1 by using this wiggle. I use it only when im about to be shot though.

That’s and the unnecessary smoke screens just hide behind that building 2 inches from you come on can’t tell you how many times I get killed because I’m in a good ambush spot and have to move because of a teams smoke and I get spotted by MG fire from the enemy u can also peek around corners and over hills without binoculars and showing yourself by using free look can’t tell you how many time I was able to save myself from death by simply stoping holding C and panning around and to no surprise a tank is sitting there waiting another tip is move slow if you know the area is being watching your more likely to get spotted while rushing to cover then taking your time and making those kill shots because the enemy is focusing on your speeding team mates lols

You are the first person I've heard talk about SLL stops in war thunder. I conduct them, especially in squadron battles and forest fights, and it's been immensely useful for years and years.

lol we get taught that In the Australian Army Cadets haha, didn't know It would be so useful in war thunder, I already have a habit before pushing out from one area to another, I normally stop, look around corners peeking and pying, and then also listening to engine sounds and gunfire, one really good thing I learnt is to go to audio, turn your engine sound down and then boost enemy engines sounds to the max, it makes it so much easier to hear OPFOR, at the same time I don't get to hear my own awesome tank sounds 😭.

I have 1200 hours logged on Warthunder. I must put my two cents in, movement is an incredibly important skill to learn. Knowing paths of which players can follow can determine your fate or your success. If you can predict the movements of your enemies, you'll bring yourself great success.

I’ll put mine in too, if you have a good flank never be blood thirsty, if you think more enemy’s are near then your better off waiting. A good flank if properly used can change the tide of a game.

The general rule of thumb is to keep low and stay behind covers like crests and rocks. Ppl also tends to greatly undermine the importance of "soft covers" like trees and bushes

I actually gained a lot of this by sheer osmosis playing the game. Great tips! SLL is one of my most used tactics. I can pinpoint enemies up to i think it's 200m away just by stopping, rotating my camera so the engine audio balances in my headphones (indicating source is directly ahead) and making sure it's not a friendly. Very, very useful in urban maps. The CAS tips are something I use a ton as well. No movement or firing unless necessary (that's always how I spot them), keep blended in, make a run difficult with positioning.

Watch some Oddbawz videos. He can tell you the colour of a gunner's socks from across the map by the engine sound. As I don't use headphones I didn't really pay attention to this until last year or so, and I'm now regularly topping leader boards at all BRs. Knowing there's an enemy nearby before he knows you're there is 90% of the engagement won.

@@danielross7983 Haha! You won't believe it, but Oddbawz is the sole War Thunder player I watch (aside from coleisprettygreat). I don't know how in the hell he can tell not just the type of plane but that it's a BF-109 E from 4km away unzoomed (second latest video iirc) but it's very impressive, his ID skills are off the charts. Never mind his adaptability skills, he can go from 3.0 BR to tip-top tier without a sweat. And you're totally right. Just knowing people are coming makes a colossal difference. You will still be taken by surprise but it's far less often and usually it'll be YOU taking the flanker by surprise.

Now that I think about it, all of my 10-11 kill games were matches where I kept moving around, flanking multiple different points and staying behind and out of sight of my enemies

100%....Sun Tzu said in The Art of War: "Appear at points which the enemy must hasten to defend; march swiftly to places where you are not expected."

Maybe this is a bit advanced but you can use the silhouette to your advantage as anyone that sees you, will engage you. So if you can survive the initial confrontation, you effectively stop the enemies' advance while they try to deal with you, which will give your own team much more options.

100%, a lot of players especially in un-stabilized tanks will stop to shoot the first thing they see out of panic reaction. So if you're confident in bouncing, you can force them to stop in the open thus making an easy kill.

As a Tiger II H player I have stopped enemies from capping using this tactic, I pop out and shoot near them, they stop and bounce, and my team comes in. It works

This is why I love flanking so much. Scoot around the cap and shoot someone in the rear, you get marked by them, and all of a sudden anyone around there focuses on you. It doesn't always work if you're immediately killed (read CAS'd to death), but fun nonetheless.

I actually like to do this just to annoy people, where - especially if my gunner is already dead or somesuch - I'll just intentionally make myself as active a target as I can, to distract as many enemies as possible. If they are spending time shooting a disabled tank, they aren't hitting friendlies.

Great video. Content and style earned my subscription. I'm a retired LEO and former USMC grunt. Without a doubt, the tactics you lay out absolutely work. I would add a few things for players to consider. First, "get off the X"... in other words, remove yourself from places the enemy knows you will be....like the spawn areas. Second, avoid "fatal funnels" places where the enemy knows you have to pass through. In a building, it would be a doorway. outside, it would be a apace between buildings. If you need to pass through or by a funnel, then you should try to "slice the pie" before entering the area (those who don't know can lookup "slicing the pie" on KZread to see what it is) . Also, for anti-CAS (my favorite!), as you say, use cover and concealment. Also, try to wait for them to commit on their pass before engaging them. Use their tracers as a guide for where to lead them. If they try to engage you specifically, shoot and then reposition as they move away from you. They might not be looking at you when you move. Movement is easier to spot than a stationary target though.

I've tried those tactics in my first 10 matches of the day and oh my, it worked really better that got me at least 2-3 more kills in an average game. You've earned a new follower man.

Finally, an actually useful tank guide. I've been looking for something like this for a long time, something that actually explains positioning more than the usual "just flank bro" advice. As a top 2% air RB player trying to get into ground battles, I've noticed that the resources that would usually explain these kinds of things in air RB just don't exist for ground RB (or I at least can't find them), so I really appreciate this kind of guide. Please consider recording yourself in gameplay and explaining what is going through your head with positioning and tactics, @AdamTheEnginerd did videos like that for air RB which were extremely helpful guides!

I have less than 300 hours in this game and I was surprised to find out I already utilize all of these tips, choosing Japan as my first nation really helped me use my environment instead of relying on armour. these are very helpful tips, I like the way you lay it out with visual examples, great video!

As a CAS main ( only fly guy in my group of friends) I love when tanks sit still in the middle of a road or field, it's easy pickings. If you want a better chance then back yourself against a building so I can only come from 180° of you and sit still. Moving targets are easy to spot. And if you are AA PLEASE put bushes on the TOP of your tank. I can't tell you the amount of times I've been shot by hidden AA

As someone who is expirienced in WT I learn nothing super new but I can guarantte these tips are trully masterclass. Movement is most important game changer on every tank you play. Good patient and carefull movement can make every mediocre tank to excelent. Newest example is Ratel 90, is neither fast neither have super gun, but flanking suprising and covering orange tank in forest was a essential to not be food for rats or birds. Everytime I was uncovered and CAS destroyed me by cannons or 50cal. Only to blame was me and poor positioning.

Very good tips mr. Bradley gunner, i can say that these tactics I've already been using but I'm surprised by how rare they are in game. Sometimes I'll spawn on a map with a great flank route thinking ya I'll counter flank, only to be met by no one flanking in the first place

Agreed. So often (i play mostly arcade after my 2 year wt break). Trams go all center. Nobody at all goes to cover flanks. And surely, 3 minutes later, while team is dead.

Running through the low trench areas along with the gullies has allowed me to move into a flank position many times or even hit the other team from behind without being seen. So many players skyline and get popped by someone lurking in the trees and bush areas due to being spotted so easy. Great vid and spot on with sound tactics.

I cannot stress how perfect the timing was for me to get recommended this video. I was frustrated with always dying in GRB so I went and grinded ARB for about a year now (got the F14), now I am finally going to get back into ground battles because I have the Squadron Abrams researched (not bought). I am going to try and use these tips to the fullest, and also thank you for your service!

This is exactly why tracks, suspension, transmission, and engine should always be the first modifications to upgrade on any tank. Superior gun handling and round selection do you no good if you can't be in the right place at the right time to put your gun on target, and you can overcome the limitations of a bad gun by having a position of advantage over an opponent (still can't do much to make APCR better tho, sorry).

Very well put together! It couldn’t have been said better! I find myself using those strategies lately and my performance has improved significantly. I’d add- play different types of vehicles, look the game from their perspective and perfect the strategy of implementation of your favourite tank.

i've been playing for years but seeing this, you gave me some things to think about when it comes to firing and maneuvering; thank you!

Not to mention when hiding from CAS you can use the shadow of buildings etc which makes you even harder to spot.

You can but that's assuming the CAS player isn't running ULQ or has shadows set to minimal - you do get some benefit but it's not as much as you think.

A point remaining to be made is the sound difference between wheeled and tracked vehicles, even if it's just to point out that there is one. And maybe something on the correct usage of smoke as means of deception and cover since there is nothing more infuriating than having a teammate who got tracked around a corner turn a stand off into a free double or tripple kill for CAS.

A proper smoke use tutorial might be a good idea. People drop smoke so often when they don't need to that it often obstructs their teammates trying to cover them.

I managed to stay undetected in SU 152 by two enemies with about 5 meters from them just because I tuned off my engine and they didn't look around the rock I was staying near XD

Good stuff. I try to also use the shadows from buildings to hide from CAS, or a light and shadow combination that will break up their sight picture. Really, I'd prefer no-CAS servers - I mean, we have no infantry, and that can make a big difference, especially in MOUT.

As a CAS pilot I can confirm, that this helps a LOT, given you are not in a Powerpositon, you will very rearly get CAS'd, so yeah, works pretty well.

Have you seen the footage from Ukraine of the two Bradleys engaging the t90m? It seems that Warthunder does get some things right...small caliber cannons can indeed put some hurting on a mbt. I'm guessing that they must have been out of tows or they would have used them. Still some impressive footage!

I have seen some footage...anything is possible in reality honestly because the vehicle is only as effective as its crew! If the gunners are experienced enough they could totally achieve mobility kills on MBTs by taking tracks out. Or even cause damage to the barrel.

@@RoneK_Actual From the footage, it appears they set off the smoke dischargers on the T-90, damaged the optics, possibly damaged the turret rotation mechanism (or wounded the gunner). And from the pictures claimed to be of the tank at a later time, it seems to also have scraped off most of the ERA on it. Not to mention that the constant noise inside must have been horrible for the crew.

As an experienced war thunder play, I’ve evolved to learn these tricks, especially dead zone. However it’s nice to hear it from an actual experienced tanker. one thing I've noticed a lot recently even in higher tiers is people being almost senseless, they never listen to other tanks nearby to figure out where the enemy might be and always just keep going down the except same path, getting the first shot in is like the holy grail of a tank gunner so not being seen or heard is so important

I've realized as I was watching that I've slowly over timed naturally started using most of the stuff you bring up in the video as I played more and more, it's great to see there's actual terms for this stuff so I can explain it better to friends who haven't figured this stuff out or are new to the game, I'll def be sharing this video with some of them as well, thank you for making this Also, another good tip for CAS, especially in faster vehicles, is when you hear or see an aircraft coming in your general direction, pop smoke and change whatever direction you're moving, this will throw them off heavily, this is an actual real world tactic that works somewhat well in War Thunder, this is also a good way to defeat missiles that are manually guided like TOW missiles

I am lately getting into CAS, and yes, I just somehow taught myself to look for when an enemy is firing a shell or machine guns or is moving on an open field.

After watching this ive played a few missions and noticed a DRAMATIC improvement in my combat abilities. Before, i was lucky to last 5 minutes before losing all 3 tanks. In my last mission i didnt die once and scored 5 kills! Thank you for this video

I am pleasantly surprised that someone brought up this topic. I play on the BMD-4 at 11.3 in a setup with the Su-25T, Mig-27K and Ka-50. The BMD-4 shows itself very well, although it is at 9.0. I just do not expose myself to enemy fire, but I do flank detours and reconnaissance. I easily make 4+ kills and assist the team with scouting(except for playing on aircrafts and other armored vehicles.). It's all thanks to moving through the folds of the terrain and moving along unpopular routes on the map if possible (I've been playing since 2019 and I know the maps well). So almost any armored vehicle in the game can be turned into a frag-bringing one by following the tips from the video. Good luck!

Just found out your channel. I hope I can learn more information from you with a military background. This video is really unique in the sense that most youtubers say the most cliche tips when making videos trying to improve players. Yours really go in depth and they don't just give the viewers theory they show the viewer how such theory works when the viewer is trialed. Very entertaining stuff!

I've played War Thunder (on and off) since it first came out (with just planes), and you have some good advice here. Even more important in Realistic mode. I would add that, in appropriate circumstances, I also turn off my engine (in what you call dead space), and an approaching enemy can't hear me at all.

The dead space thing is very smart and I already do this. On the map flounders, those big trenches and behinds hills are great spots not only to hide, but other players will pass you and you can just shoot them in the side or rear.

Wow, I got laughed at by my squadron for having 2.5k hours and asking for tips with positioning of this nature. Thanks a lot, would love to see more of this kind of content.

It is very refreshing to see someone talking about fundamentals like this. I considered making a video on this topic 2-3 years ago when I started getting really into War Thunder and I was around 1-2k hours. I am now at 7k with most tech trees unlocked or spaded when it comes to ground and air is well on the way to that too. The only other topic I have not seen anyone talk about when it comes to movement fundamentals is map pacing and adjustments to said pacing based on BR. Most games you will meet the enemy team at specific locations that are either meta or common pathways which is the way the game is designed based on player habits and Gaijin having suggestive gameplay elements. Take the transition of 8.0 - 9.0 for example. Mobility skyrockets between 8.0-9.0 and the armour meta arguably starts to disappear. While all BRs have their popular and meta vehicles, understanding what you can and cant see based on the uptier/downtier and the max BR of the match helps me decide where I will go on the map. The first thing I do every game after seeing the BR of the match is check the nations I am fighting and play around that fact. Back when the Centuaro was 8.0 and I was playing 7.0 US I had to completely change my gameplan if I was against Italy because I knew the map pacing had the potential to be completely different and the mobility of my enemy was far superior to mine. I had the chance to run into said Centauros at completely unexpected spots due to their ability to cross the map in a faster time to what I was used to. Everyone will have preferred sides to maps but truly understanding how your side of the map will play out based on the set parameters you can account for every game makes gameplay so much more fun when you can guess what the enemy will be doing before they have even realised themselves.

I'm glad you're sharing about SLLs. For me, it was something I learned overtime while playing the game (I thought it was common sense to SLL). It's crazy how frequent you can see high leveled players hold W without checking for enemies. I also learned that moving on low rpm helps, as you can keep moving forward while also listening for enemy sounds. It's not applicable for every scenario tho, but helpful when needed.

Great set of tips! I would add use of shadows for concealment and turning off engine if waiting in ambush. Also, when choosing a firing position - choose a cover and angle that allow you to see but not fire (or to fired upon), popping out to fire and back into cover.

Im a world of tank blitz player with 10k battle. I was using this technique and it was very helpful ! Every battles i was the best because of the mouvement !

A lot of good info in the video for newer or mid-skill players. I've been playing since 2015 and pretty much agree with everything you've said here. Movement and how you do it is absolutely critical in this game. The amount of times in matches when I see people just press W and go straight for a point only to die over and over is mind boggling to me. As for the CAS tips... I really think minimizing yourself to it just isn't enough. Planes and helicopters are just too much of a threat currently to properly deal with for most players, even long time ones like me.

Like I said in the video, there is no way to completely eliminate the threat of CAS, just do your best to minimize it.

I'm supprised that I haven't seen anyone mention these more often. When I started WT I watched some old WW2 US Tanker training footage and got these points drilled in very early on.

Great video and very helpful. I would love to see a video in this style that focus specifically on positioning. How to identify good and bad "spots", Where to drive and the start of the match, in general how to "read" the battle. I think these are skills that experienced players take forgranted, but a lot of players really struggle with that kind of stuff. I know that is huge topic, but a video that even just covers the basics would be amazing.
