"How did the Onbu travel without roads?" My guess would be that the 'roads' are probably the equivalent of colossal game trails, migratory routes of the onbu stomped flat by its' occasional passage, weighty feet packing the soil so densely trees can't take root and leaving paths clear for it to wander.

You should run a D&D game based on this concept. Adventurers living in a village on the back of an Anbu and have to go leave to forage, dungeon delve and avoid poison clouds as the Anbu travels through blighted lands.

You should in fac NOT run a D&D game based on this, as D&D is exceedingly poorly suited to it, with no good support for farming of community-building. There's actually good games for doing that. D&D isn't one of them
