"The wall must go", she says | Homestead Farmhouse Renovation Pt 5

The first thing you do with old books is go through each one to make sure someone didn't stash cash between the pages! I read a story about someone buying a hoarder's house and before throwing out the books they went through them and the previous owner had placed cash at nearly every chapter beginning in many of the books. It was literally hundreds of thousands of dollars!!
Katie I always enjoy seeing the plate of food you cook. You make amazing meals for Nate, as he deserves, after working hard and long days.

Yes he's amazing! One man show I found this channel from another station recommendation and find it quiet interesting. What a blessing to be able to have this much property. Yes it will be work but in the end all worth it. If you can turn some of this land into source of income for you both that would be the best part of all this. Thanks for sharing.

We called that fan The Attic Fan. It’s what we used in the 1950’s before air conditioning. I was raised in Texas near the Gulf Coast. The breeze was nice, but the humidity was awful.

Where do you find a good whole house fan. We need one that is about a foot square or a foot long rectangle. Right now we used 3 old computer fans, made a frame to fit the hole and they are sucking the hot air into the attic. Powered by the range hood electricity and switch.

I have one of those fans, we call it an attic fan and you have to keep a window open but it is great for circulating the air, we love it 🙂
Soooo much unexpected work - glad you can keep your cool with all the surprises! It will be worth all the aggravation in the long run, though. Keep on, keep on.... :o)
Every house that I have owned has been an older home. I have always had to undo what some previous owner had jacked together. Takes 10 times as much energy and time to fix it properly.

Wow, so much hard work but is paying off. The fan in your ceiling is pretty cool and I have never seen that before 👍. Your sun room has so much potential. Just taking the rug out made a huge difference. I bet your house even smells better already. So cool you can pick your own food from your garden.

Yes, the house went from smelling absolutely disgusting to now smelling like a library. The carpets were so soiled and dirty that once they were out the smell went almost completely away in a day or two.
My grandparents had an attic fan like that and it would cool down the house so much.
You’re definitely a hard worker! You’ve both made great strides to clean up the house and build your own little farm.

Yes, thank you
That opens up the living area so much into a nice big open space with a wood-burning fireplace. I would take down that wall. It doesn’t need to be up to create a hallway. Open concept.
Our family found the best way to use the attic fan was to only open the windows like an inch. You hand will feel when the suction is strong. Then in the morning, before the outside air warms up, close all the windows and shut blinds and the house would stay cool until about 3 or 4 in the afternoon. We lived in a hot part of US with lots of humidity.
Making two bedrooms is a great idea for that space. The white paint you put on the floor made that area so much lighter. Im a big fan of old houses.. that one has had some pretty bad renovation work in the past.. but her bones are good. Good job Nate.. its going to be amazing!

We love our our whole house fan It saves Energy costs on not having air Conditioner on all the time
Nate , you look exhausted and defeated, that is a huge task and you are working your way through it so well. Hard hard work and perhaps a weekend away would do you both good, but then their are animals to tend to. You live on a paradise of land so maybe long walks and resting out in the acerage would renew the spirit and soul. Katie, your meals are amazing and I am sure Nate looks forward to those delicious plates of food at the end of the day. True enough physical exhaustion and mental are the same yet different. Either one can exhaust you. Pace yourselves and take care as it's going no where nor are the animals. Lots on both of your plates. Everything is looking good and the home is going to be amazing when you are done. Hang in there, there is a light at the end of the tunnel! God bless, get some rest!!! 🙂
lol....watching you with that vacuum I was thinking..."man, he needs a longer...thingy" ...then....."WALLA!"...there it was ! 👏😆 My dad had built in one of those huge fans into a big house he built...."AFTER" all us kids moved out ! 🙄(there were 6 of us and we grew up in a 1500sqf house) It moved a LOT of air ! Sucked everything all the way up from the basement into the whole house....but man, was it LOUD !! Looking good in that house ! 👍

They are red pear tomatoes and they were quite tasty. I lightly salted and peppered them then stir fry them with a little basil and balsamic vinegar.
The 'carpet tack strip' of which you speak, is called 'smooth edge.' The padding that goes under the carpet is called 'underlay.' if you don't want to take out another wall, take the baseboards out, and cut into it on, say, a 45 degree angle, and pull it with a hooked knife, or pliers if necessary. Then put the trim back on. Sure. it'll take a bit of time, but not as much time as tearing down a whole wall and putting back trim and all that. BTW, when taking material down, cut in the corner between the wall & ceiling, as not ripping peces of paint and such, it'll be easier to patch in later. I used to do all this before retirement.
👍👍👍👍👍👍❤️ spider is what we call here in Southeast Arkansas a Grand daddy Longleg spider.

The bathroom linoleum was actually nice when it was clean! LOL My house built in 1998 has a whole house fan and in the fall when the nights are cool we open windows and turn that on low and its awesome!
A little ingenuity and some duct tape and magic happens. I'm kinda glad the wall was built over the carpet cause I hated the setup and wanted you to tear it down. Easy for me to want much harder for you to do. Keep up the great work. Also I've found the pear shaped tomatoes split super easily.

I grew up with attic fans .... that was our air conditioning back in the day. You ran the fan at night with the windows open when it was cool outside and then shut up the house during the day to keep the cool air inside as much as possible. It’s never ending but at least you work smart. So many people put the dry wall on the ground then have to pick it up, glad you had the wheel barrow. Glad you had someone look at the books. I did a book clean up with my friend who is a Librarian and almost all the books had to go as they had mold, which I have a feeling your books have also? When I lived in the Midwest the house I had had a ceiling fan and it was the best. It helped so much, I’m trying to figure how to have one in my house now. When you are so tired physically and mentally it’s common to not be able to recall what the names for things are. It’s a sign to me you are doing hours of hard work.
One of the houses we grew up in [we moved a lot.] had a fan like that but we called it an attic fan, I guess because it pulled the air up into the attic. It really cooled that big house though. We had no a.c. and we live in central Fl.
