The Vocal Range of Lance King

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

King has served as the lead singer for a number of obscure power/prog metal bands over the last 3 decades, most notably Balance of Power, Avian, and the most overlooked band in the world Pyramaze. Though a low tenor, King can tend to thin out in the upper reaches and sound rather falsettish, yet has a very baritone like low register. In fact, sometimes he seems more comfortable in the lower extremities than the high. He has also developed some interesting nonmodal technique, including the always pleasing deathgrowl!
0:00 A spellbinding passage bottoming at G2 from "Legend"
0:35 He first sings down to A2, then speaks to F♯2 in "The Bone Carver"
0:54 Spoken section bottoming at F2 from "Blood Red Skies"
1:17 A pair of solid E2s from "Thundersoul" by Avian
1:28 A creepy passage from "House of Cain" bottoming at E2
1:49 Another passage from "Blood Red Skies" this ending on E♭2
2:02 A strange section from "Time and Space Part II" featuring several solid E♭2s amidst some whispering
2:31 Sing-speaking some solid D2s in "The Lost and Forsaken"
2:48 Several very strong B1s with fry F1s from "Killer or the Cure"
3:13 Songspeaking down to his lowest full note B♭1 amidst some fry in solo song "A Moment in Chiros"
3:34 Speaking in vocal fry down to B♭1 in "Ashes and Madness"
3:55 An impressive deathgrowl bottoming at C1(!) from "The Lost and Forsaken"
4:11 Now onto the highs: A beautiful familiar passage topping at B♭4 from "Legend"
5:03 Singing up to a powerful B4 in "Time and Space Part II"
5:19 Singing down from C5 in "Mighty Abyss"
5:39 Sharp C5s from "Seven Days to Nevermore"
5:52 Ethereal C♯5s from two verses in "The Birth"
6:27 Several airy C♯5s from "Stranger Days (To Come)"
6:43 More ethereal singing topping at D5 from the cluttered ending of "The Birth"
7:18 Lots of D5s, ending with an E♭5 from "Hard Life"
7:56 Working up to a clean E♭5 in "When Heaven Calls Your Name"
8:12 A stronger, sustained E♭5 from "Book of Secrets"
8:27 An astonishingly powerful E5 from the live version of "What Lies Beyond" by Pyramaze
8:43 A slide up to a strong E5 from a live cover of "Still of the Night" with his band Krucible
8:58 Surprisingly seamless singing to F5 from "Prisoner of Pride"
9:07 Working up to E5 then a VERY full F5 from the live performance of "The Birth"
9:25 Singing in full up to E♭5, then switching to falsetto for a shrill F5 in "Ancient Words Within"
9:44 Some sustained C♯5s ending on a falsetto F♯5 from "Dance of Power". Love this chorus.
10:12 - The very impressive ending of "Eyes of Stranger" live with Krucible, where Lance first hits a solid E2, then screams an F5, speaks a D2, and lets out an F♯5 which rises to G5!
10:42 A strong, sustained falsetto G5 from "Legend"
10:50 A rare live performance of that same song where he actually overshoots to a G♯5!
11:00 A well-sustained passage where Lance sings up to E♭5 in full voice, then gradually switches to falsetto for an F5 which trills to a short G♯5; song is "Time and Space Part II: Unlock the Mystery"
11:30 And finally, Lance glides up to a strong G♯5 in "Fire Dance"
Thanks as always to Thetarantinomaniac, Royalcrimsontheater and Danerage, and of course the man himself, Lance King (MEGALOUD)!

I just love Lance's voice and his versatility, he's one of my modern all-time faves. Btw, I was kinda surprised not to see "Walking on Top of the World" in the video, seeing as you also include falsetto parts. Still, I would be curious to see where it ranks among his highs.

Top notes are E5. I decided I had much better ones to choose from.

I agree 100% that Pyramaze is incredibly overlooked. I have no idea how they're so consistently ignored - even now after the very famous Barlow worked with them.

@MEGALOUD Thank you for commenting again, Lance! I knew I'd probably end up redoing this video once your solo album came out, and yes I really like "Dance of Power." I actually think your voice is getting better :D

As far as voice placement goes, voice type has nothing to do with range. Plenty of tenors have hit B1, and Lance's aren't exactly impressive. His natural placement and tessitura is comfortably in the tenor range, but he has very good low extension. He's no more of a baritone than Steven Tyler really.
