The Vocal Range of Michael Kiske

The legendary former frontman of Helloween, Michael Kiske is renowned for his seamless powerful highs, crystal clean tone and wide vibrato. After leaving the band in the early 90s, he has released several solo records of light rock and pop, and has made guest appearance on many metal records. Most notably, he has appeared on every release of Tobias Sammett's Avantasia project, and has recorded with Revolution Renaissance and Place Vendome.

3:21 - A fantastic B4 from "Sign of the Times"

It's never "falsetto" for him, it's "head voice" tecnique, the same of many others heavy metal singers (Halford, Dickinson, Tate etc.). "Falsetto" is the one used in the higher register by King Diamond, for example, very different in tone, espression etc.

mmmm yep you got the point, but also there are two types of head-voice; the falsetto is actually head voice, and the other "head voice" you were pointing at its the transition between chest and head voice which is harder to do than falsetto. for example Run to the hills, or i want out chorus.

Several singers have a wider range (both on the bottom and the heights), but one of Kiske's main accomplishments and virtues is the ability to easily go from head to full voice (and vice-versa); they are connected like hell and his voice always keeps its spectacular shape. You can hardly tell the exact moment where he switches, and thus sounds so natural... As an example, pick Deris... he's good but come on, that head voice is so inconnected that tends to always sound like raspy falsettos

Hope this helps, but actually his highest note with full voice ends up in D5, like in Your Turn... all the notes above seem clearly head voice (included the ones labeled as "falsetto"). There are even some lower than D5 that still sound very head-voiced (it depends on how much he has to sustain, the vowel he carries on, the former and the next phrase, etc). I.E: the C♯5 from Place Vendome.

I match the tones with my own voice and pitch them using a tuner I have on my phone. Sometimes I can do it by ear, but I always check it on a tuner anyway. Sometimes I use a keyboard if it's particularly tricky in the low registers, or is too high for me to accurately replicate.

I keep hearing that kiske is a tenor, but he sounds similar to Geoff Tate who is clearly a baritone in that they both use a lot of twang and cry in their voices and use very open vowels to negotiate their bridges. Kiske’s voice does seem to have a bit of a fuller quality like in Sign of the Times though, but he struggles in his mid voice sometimes so idk.

That would've been quite the spectacle ! But no, just thinking out loud - Kiske was tired of metal and felt limited by the genre (as he has said many times during interviews). Many great albums outside the country genre were recorded and mixed on Music Row, and still are.

The Kiske-era Helloween was an incredible match of gifted musicians and composers. I'm not aware of any metal band before them that wrote vocal lines to harmonize with guitar melodies quite like they did. They had raw talent in spades and drew inspiration from diversity to innovate. Chameleon demonstrated they were evolving beyond the genre. I'd love to pick their brains about the formation and arrangement of the first five albums ! Liked and subbed :) - I love technical analysis of virtuoso musicians, great idea thank you
