I just finished watching The Handmaiden for the first time and came to KZread to find this video...strange. Oldboy is still my favorite Park Chan-Wook film, since I've had more time with it.
Bong Joon Ho's films are realistic, Park Chan-wook's films are intoxicating
Oldboy is the first and only film I had to press stop on when the twist happened-- I felt dirty, betrayed, shocked and numb... I literally had to take time away from the film. A few days passed and then I was brave enough to finish it.This is the only film that has ever done that to me. And by the end of the film you realize it's not Oh Dae-su's revenge story it's Yoo Ji-tae revenge story. That last shot of Oh Dae-su smiling is haunting... It's not only a revenge film but moreover it's a tragedy. No one wins in the end. And this is the first film I felt, especially at the big revelation at the climax, just kicks in the stomach and keep kicking and kicking and kicking you when you're down. There was so much feelings going through my head... It was overwhelming! Ultimately, Old Boy showed me it doesn't matter what the subject matter of the film is as long as it's good and compelling it will work.

Dirty, betrayed, shocked and numb... imho. Literally. IMHO Supposedly "in my humble opinion", this is always said before someone makes an asshole comment that is not at all humble. Much like "no offense" precedes an offensive comment.

Oh Dae-Su made a single mistake by talking too much when he was young, in no way does that balance with Yoo's drawn-out revenge.
The Vengeance Trilogy and The Handmaiden are masterworks. Also, if you keep the credits on through to the end of Sympathy you can still hear Mr. Park crying in the dirt. Truly a crushing experience

Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is hands down the best of the 3. It is the most beautifully shot and most emotionally captivating. Anyone that has seen Oldboy should see it and the rest of Park Chan Wook's filmography. V excited for Decision to Leave this year.
My introduction to Korean cinema was Oldboy. I had been binging on J-horror and thought that the chilling depictions of ghosts where better than anything I had seen before. And then a friend showed me Oldboy. No movie has probably matured me like that one. When I realized how crude jokes or inappropriate comments had been the catalyst for the entire story, something casually done and long forgotten, and those actions had repercussions that lasted a literal lifetime, I knew in the deepest part of myself that I could be Oh Dae-su. It changed me. But it was more than that as well. Lee Woo-jin endured pain and loss, but those feelings fade over time. It wasn't love lost that drove him, it was his embarrassment and humiliation and it became such a powerful force that his vengeance was glacial and sadistic. Instead of taking his own life, or Oh Dae-su's, he made his vengeance into the rest of both of their lives. Dae-su lacked appreciation for his own life and family. He was left to agonize over 15 years on the many people he had wronged and to learn to appreciate what he had by feeling the pain of what he had lost. When given his chance to seek his own vengeance, he felt powerful, he became powerful. Lee Woo-jin wanted Oh Dae-su to experience his pain, but more than that, his humiliation but also his embarrassment. As an audience perhaps we can forgive the incest of Oh Dae-su because he was set up, hypnotized, it wasn't his choice. How can we blame him then? He poetically atones for his sin of "talking too much" by cutting out his own tongue so he can never talk again. We see Lee Woo-jin appear to grant him absolution, and it would seem that his vengeance at long last is sated by the sight of Oh Dae-su debasing himself submissively. The film could end there and we would be satisfied. And yet, the final scene. We find Oh Dae-su is trying to have his memory erased. Not to let go of the trauma of the vengeance that had been wrought upon him, at least, not entirely, but so he can continue an incestuous relationship. So he can keep the secret from himself. If he can erase that knowledge, surely he cannot be the monster. But here we see the vengeance of Lee Woo-jin is finally complete. It wasn't pity that stopped him from exposing the situation to Mi-do. It was satisfaction at seeing that Oh Dae-su had fallen in love with his daughter and would do anything to keep that a secret, even cut out his own tongue. He spent two decades and a fortune to put Oh Dae-su into his same exact circumstances. He did not need Oh Dae-su to be exposed, or Mi-do to kill herself. Oh Dae-su remembering or forgetting that Mi-do was his daughter didn't even matter. Lee Woo-jin had achieved the perfect revenge. He truly balanced the scales in the most evil way. He made Oh Dae-su into the worst part of himself and left him to try and live out his miserable existence wanting to be that.
This is a fucking incredible reflection on Park Chan Wook's work. I'm so glad you made this. What a concise and articulate video essay.

I started watching Korean movies when Oldboy won at Cannes. I was so curious that an ultra-violent revenge thriller won at such a stuffy award.
That was a fantastically well made, insightful video essay! Thank you!
The genius of Park Chan Wook’s vengeance trilogy is the way he doesn’t end up siding completely with one perspective on revenge. He’s always described his views on vengeance being a futile and fruitless endeavour in terms of how it benefits those involved but he doesn’t allow this to form a complete condemnation of revenge, what we witness in his work is not the typical modern pseudo-moral critique of vengeance of ‘revenge is bad because it’s unfulfilling and no one has the right to take revenge, two wrongs don’t make a right’ but he opts for a far more nuanced approach that shows the pros and cons of vengeance that allows the audience to make judgements for themselves rather than having an explicit agenda dominate the work. If one follows complete utilitarianism then they’ll see these films and most likely see the risk of vengeance and then come to the conclusion that it’s brutal and often does not work out for everyone involved which makes vengeance pointless despite the clear reason and justification behind many revenge cases. To someone who bases their views more on naturalism they may see these films as a clear display of how natural and human it is to desire revenge which at least makes it not unjust even with its several risks and flaws. To a Kantian they may view these films as an example of why revenge can’t be accepted but also realising how strong the need for revenge can get which challenges the notion of a universalised moral opposition to revenge being embraced on a societal scale. Even people who fit outside of one specific school of ethics (such as myself) can try to apply their own ethical codes to this and make their own conclusion. What makes these films amazing is how they will undoubtedly challenge the viewer’s views in at least one way, the natural and justified desire for revenge is shown incredibly well while the trilogy also exemplifies the risk of taking revenge which often results in nothing but more pain for all parties; these two are by no means the only things that define the moral conflict shown in these films (or even scratch the surface of the plethora of reasons for this trilogy being so perfect) but they are important pillars that are masterfully built on in creating a realistic and complex exemplification of the blurred ethics behind vengeance while refraining from shoving one specific view down the viewer’s throat. For example, most people I’ve seen talk about these films seem to think Park Chan Wook shares their views, these views have all been wildly different but it really does show a very mature approach to storytelling which refrains from any explicit condemnation or praise for revenge by showing it through a realistic and balanced perspective. I personally believe Park Chan Wook is most likely a utilitarian with a bit of an ethical naturalist/error theorist streak but it’s very likely that this streak is just a product of my own views and my own subsequent interpretation of his work along with what he has explicitly stated. This is a great result to achieve in one’s filmmaking, to challenge people in ways they probably haven’t been properly exposed to and to maintain this challenge for everyone, even challenging those who share your views.
You have explained why I like the first film so much more than the others. Thank you for the fantastic content!

@andrewhussey4538
2 жыл бұрын
It's much less painstaking, there's very few moments of handheld camera and such in lady vengeance and you can see the budget is lower...same with his earlier Joint Security Area...looking back though I really liked Mr. Vengeance, it's probably the most "vague" of the three, in oldboy your mostly with Dae su, woo Jin I got his motives but honestly both characters are kind of dicks. Lady vengeance had a straight antagonist, a guy so awful that really no matter what she did geum ja was going to be the one I was rooting for. In Mr vengeance though I really quite liked both the players, they were sympathetic and I got why they did what they did, didn't agree with it all but I understood it and sympathized with both of them to where I really didn't know who I "rooted" for or against...I really found it refreshingly vague...

@@andrewhussey4538 That might be part of it. It's been a while since I watched any of them, so maybe on a rewatch I'll enjoy it more? When I saw the other two, I was focused the whole time.
@andrewhussey4538

@@chillinginthenameof it's something worth a rewatch, not everything he does is going to fit with everyone, I was absolutely engrossed with the handmaiden and I had a lot of friends who watched it and were like "I kind of felt like I was watching a softcore porn" lol, I also wasn't as impressed with I'm a cyborg but that's OK. It was good, I liked it, really quirky, the idea of a romance story in a mental institution was really cool, but compared to thirst or lady vengeance it was a little light on story. Did you watch JSA? That's another early one of his I really liked and had a lower budget but the story and mystery kept me invested the whole time. I need to check out his television series, he directed a miniseries called little drummer girl in English that I've heard is just great but i haven't had the chance to see it yet

@@imposter6952 i don't think oldboy is at all worried about realism, the film and the world it takes place in are obviously very heightened and the same goes for lady vengeance. sympathy for mr vengeance is the only film of the trilogy that i would feel comfortable calling grounded

great analysis on sympathy for mr vengeance. the vengeance trilogy is the best and most in-depth study of the theme - revenge, I consider all three films to be amazing but oldboy is my favorite. Chan wook park made distinctive choices in how the story is presented, not repeating the same style in narrative structure makes the trilogy what it is.
Everyone talks up Oldboy, but my favorite in the trilogy has always been Mr. Vengeance. After my first viewing I hated it. Everyone just... died. Nobody got a happy ending. A month later though, I just couldn't stop thinking about it. I realized that it wasn't supposed to be a Hollywood revenge thriller, it was supposed to be a Greek tragedy. I think I've actually grown more accepting of the fact that people wage wars having watched it. I don't feel hatred for typical villains anymore, rather... *ahem* sympathy. Before watching it, if someone said on the news that a wealthy child had been kidnapped and turned up dead in a river, I would say that the one responsible was a sick bastard. Now I wonder what circumstances led them to commit such a heinous crime. What was the turning point that led them to their decision? Can we all see the good in them and treat them with humanity after their behavior? I get why Oldboy is popular, but Mr. Vengeance made me change how I view the actions of my fellow man and has therefore stuck with me in a very special way.

The Vengeance Trilogy is still my favorite set of Foreign films of all time. If only the Arrow Box Set with all the features & documentary for OldBoy was Region Free.
The only film I’ve ever watched from Park Chan-wook is Stoker and I remember being so mesmerized by it. Immediately saved as much as I could (took awhile since I was a teenager back then) and purchased a copy and would watch it basically everyday. I really wanted to be a director so I was studying film a lot and can’t lie that this director instantly caught my attention. I’ve started to grow interest in film again and wanna take my director dream more seriously so I’km going to watch the rest of his films now.

OH YAY MY FAVORITE DIRECTOR
i just finished watching the trilogy and i never liked sympathy for mr. vengeance as much, but i have a reason to appreciate it now, thank you for this analysis
Heard so much about old boy so i checked it out and it is good but didn't have a lot of impact on me because maybe i've watched a lot of films and read a lot of thrillers that i already knew what was going on, also hearing about it a lot made my expectations too high. Then, i found out that it's actually a trilogy, so i checked out the other two as well. I liked lady vengeance but i liked it less than old boy and i don't know why. Maybe because i wasn't feeling well when i watched it or because i just finished watching silenced before i watched it. Then here goes sympathy for Mr. Vengeance. And holysht. That movie just blew my mind. Right from the start. The way they amplify the sound that i wanted to not hear a thing then remembering that the lead is deaf and just- i cant even write my thoughts properly because there's just a lot of things to talk about that having to watch it just last night and just one time isn't enough.
One of my favorite moments in Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance is when Ryu is in his car and lays down two bottles full of urine. One is full, the other is half full. This to me is in reference to the phrase “the glass is half full/half empty”. To be optimistic or pessimistic. But the original phrase is in reference to water. In the film, it’s waste. Something unusable and undesirable. This to me reads like no matter how you view this situation, both sides are wrong. This is just my interpretation, and it very well could be wrong because I like to over-analyze things, but that’s just how I think of it. And I think that’s pretty damn poetic.
INCREDIBLE VIDEO
