I loved that movie as a kid. I watched it a bunch of times when it came out in 1997, I was 12 years old. Still have my VHS copy home. I somewhat forgot about it during my teens until I played Dead space for the first time.

My fifteen year old son, who loves the Walking Dead, was terrified of this movie.

I love the scene in white ghost where the guy delivers a cake and he sees a repeated scene that’s just creepy.

11:05 this isn't the case, Mumiya asks Takabe if he saw his wife dead, which confirms that somehow Mumiya or someone/thing got into his mind.

I really disliked watching the movie. But as it lingered in my mind over time, I fell in love with the film.

I initially thought of this movie as a purgatory since the first and last image are of flaming backgrounds with differing women. Only when I read it was a biblical retelling did I get that the woman was Earth and that "God" is evil for creating "Nature" just for her to be loved, raped, exploited, and destroyed then simply made again, and again, and again, and again forever. I never want to watch the film again but it will never leave my mind after learning more about it. I love our planet and our universe. Very weird though to understand the conflicting themes between the movie's religious origin and my very atheistic worldview.

Interesting how people have different perspectives on things. The insignificance and the grandness of the universe brings me extreme elation. I revel in the isolation and unimportance of life on Earth. Something about being as important to the universe as a grain of sand is to a human is just... I dont know. Awesome.

Havent watched the video yet. But I absolutely love Nightcrawler. He is so relatable to me in many ways but not evil. Well in some parts he is, namely getting his partner killed, and tampering with a crime scene to get the perfect shot. But everything else is just so well written and acted that I can empathise with him. Because I see many aspects of myself reflected. Namely the masking. Alright after watching. Ouch a little. I have ASD and kind of felt like Lou was also on the spectrum, just yknow. A scumbag. Psycopathy never even crossed my mind as a possibility.

This movie DEFINITELY ruin my childhood. 9 years old me watch this movie with my dad at our favourite local theatre. We both thinking that it would be fun; watching Dr. Alan Grant from Jurassic Park inside a spaceship? What could be wrong? Then, for the first time in my life, I can't sleep for a night 🤣

I have to be honest with this film: I think it's highly overrated. I'm not claiming it's poor but it's simply far too contrived to be considered harrowing, relatively speaking. The direction relies far too heavily on the same techniques: unrealistic background noise, facial close-ups, etc. so the acting becomes secondary. The pacing is thoroughly wrong: the young actor falls to looks of anguish; the same looks of anguish, far too quickly and far too early in the film meaning that the shock value is lost later when it should be climactic, but isn't. This is also compounded by his unrealistically jovial countenance right at the beginning of the film before he abandoned at the camp with Dashya. All-in-all the direction and production is so taxing that there is no room for the acting to breath. The story arc is not dependent on drama; it's dependent on camera work; it's not dependent on atmosphere, it's dependent on production. Perhaps the director's techniques would have been better suited to a short film, but for a film such as this it just doesn't work.

when someone's making horror usually they make it so that the monster is something you can't understand. like an alien or a ghost or something like that. not something you can. the fact that it's just a woman creates paranoia

I can relate to the empathy deficiency as an autistic man. I have to wear a mask to make other people comfortable, but I put effort into making them comfortable because I care. ASPD folks only care as far as it benefits them and it comes off differently when you witness it.

Down the rabbit hole i go. Watched "The face of god" and I'm diving deep in short horror videos. I love horror but it's frustrating how mega productions with tons of resources fail to use said resources. Like even kids these days won't get scared but that s**t. The only relatively recent series I found to be truly good horror was "The haunting of hill house". Perfect in my opinion.

I feel like the movie is a statement about how close our modern society is to psychopathy, by showing how close the journey of a complete emotionless psychopath can be to what could be perceived as "heroic" with a just few minor tweaks. If you spoke the movie out loud, it could easily be misunderstood as a story about the American dream. A guy who used to be a criminal realizes the error of his ways and starts his own business' by working harder and doing things that other aren't willing to do he achieves success. He expands his business' and makes it to the top no matter what it takes. He even finds love and friendship only to tragically lose them when he puts his job ahead of his relationships. He learns a valuable lesson and, by not giving up, fulfils his lifelong dreams. Just like the soundtrack, the movie is only slightly removed from being a completely relatable protagonists journey. There is only a hint that something is not right. We can all be the hero of our own story if we choose to leave a few details out and embellish others. You don't even have to tell a lie to pull it off.

Incredible film (& such a damn articulate & masterful breakdown-I’m late but I’m subbed man👍) Love the foreshadowing of the fisherman hooking the worm (intro) w/not 1 hook, but 2 (or a double); symbolic of not just this devil but the fake shaman he uses as well (Love that you brought up Memento, a criminally unwatched film)
