Kami brought the dragon balls back because people were still pure hearted, evidently seen in Goku. However after the fight with King Piccolo, as we all know, Piccolo Jr. was born So Goku went up to the lookout to get training and was warned of Piccolo Jr., so he trained with Kami for 3 years so he could face him. There wasn’t any condition mentioned as far as I know

King Piccolo also introduces the formula most later arcs would follow. Goku is taken out of commission for a time. The other fighters have to band together to hold the villain back until Goku arrives. Goku trains or gets a sudden power up and fights the villain after they kill main characters. The Saiyan, Namek, Android, and to a lesser extent Buu sagas all follow this formula.

General Tao was the first villain to absolutely destroy Goku, he was a minor character but he had a major impact.

I wouldn't call Tao a minor character 🤔🤔 Although he only had about half a season, he put Goku to work, hard. 😕 Had that boy training and he didn't even realize it 😅 it was nice seeing him pop back up in Z. Not a huge character, but definitely a stepping stone in the overall story.

Tao while has the biggest threat, isn't the main villains of that arc... He's more of the "heavy" character that once go down, the villians are joke that point

it is good, i recently happen to catch the first couple episodes on tv. but from my memories as a kid the show had no plot for some reason. i think thats why many dont rewatch it. they remember it having little to no plot when it does have the same amount of plot and development as Z

Unfortunately some kids use it as a power scaling method cuz Goku breaks a panel as a gag joke so that puts 5 layers into boundless somehow, i swear people that power scale db are just weird, DB heroes is just a power scalers wet dream Other than that its my favourite out if the franchise

Yeah he was the first proto villain but in a minor key I mean i remember him being a threat to goku and he was the first giving him a real hard time I won t forget how brutal he was beating up goku, which was a little kid that got abused by that creepy man

If I'm gonna be honest, King Piccolo had the best presentation as a villain out of any character in Dragon Ball. The build up to him regaining his youth and killing Shenron then actually achieving global conquest before being struck down by Goku has always been awe-inspiring to me. Props to Toriyama for cooking with this villain!

The build up to piccolo and Frieza in namek is one of the greatest build ups. I like frieza's a little more. But king piccolo killing shenron was one of the greatest villain moments in dragon ball.

The way my jaw fell off my face when killed Shenron (AND THE DRAGON BALLS IN THE PROCESS) is what made him terrifying.

it’s sad that a lot of people just skip over db and go straight to dbz. the tien and piccolo arcs are peak dragon ball

Not a lot of people had that choice back then, I had that choice myself way later on unlike them. I think I started around 2018-19 to watch the show from start to it's inevitable end as DBS was airing.

I mean he literally shifted the tone for the future of the Dragon Ball franchise. So, that’s understandable.

I think the first shift into the more serious tone was when Tao Pai Pai killed Upa's dad

While not as impressive as destroying planets, Piccolo also rose the stakes by destroying cities with ease.

Over there, it seems to be completely normal to joke about / show sexuality in the pursuit of humor, even in kids content, as it’s really all just jokes. Showing Goku’s ‘parts’? Always done either in a harmless or comedic fashion to show his ignorance of society. Bulma’s scenes? Always used as a vehicle for comedy, usually to laugh at Roshi. Stuff like the Ran-Fan (I think) fight? Done as both a comedic showing of her very poor fighting, and as a show of Nam’s skill to be able to fight with eyes closed. These adult scenes are totally fine in Japan because sexuality usually isn’t being used for looks, but as a vehicle to do something else, usually comedy. Also why the ‘sexy-jutsu’ in Naruto is totally kid-friendly humor in Japan, and allowed to be in a Shonen magazine. Other adult stuff in the show like death and alcohol are also fine, even in the west. Death is treated either as a serious vehicle to drive the characters emotions, and/or as a way to show the evil of the villains. And the alcohol is also used for comedy. TL;DR: the sex is used for comedy and other adult themes are used for character growth or also comedy. Japanese standards are very different. Holy shit why did I type this all out.

And if it wasn't for his defeat, we never would have gotten Piccolo Jr, the Piccolo we know now

Exactly. I have been saying this for a long time. The guy's offspring were stronger than almost anyone in the planet, he was strong enough to kill Shen Long, and it was the first time Goku had to resort to "mystical" ways to get strong quickly due to how overwhelming Piccolo was. Heck, he killed the strongest human on earth at the time (Roshi). That was also the reason he learned to properly sense and control his ki/chi.

He also changed the genre of the series

Zeph said it himself, King Piccolo was not only the best and coldest villain, but he was a Trailblazer when it came to giving us some of the hardest moments in the series.

I'd say that Tao Pai Pai was the first non gag villain. Not as accomplished as Piccolo, but the first of the breed

To me it was Tao, he was the first overwhelming villain and his defeat was very satisfying after all of Goku's hardships to become stronger.

You could argue Raditz changed the series even more. Without Raditz, Goku is still just a strange guy that had a tail as a kid.

80 % of dragon ball fans saw dragon ball z before actually watching dragon ball so they get to know about frieza before knowing king piccolo

I would say it’s Raditz, he not only forced goku and piccolo to team up but also got goku killed, brought in power levels, brought in saiyans, opened up the wider universe, and set the rest of the series up.

I still can't believe he's still one of the only villains who A: Got his wish on the Dragon Balls & more importantly, B: *Killed ShenLong!* The only other one who did that was Zamas & he technically didn't do the latter

KP killing Shenron really raised the stakes. No second chances if they lost

DKP is the reason why Goku felt the need to protect earth from any threat, previous villains were at least city level, but DKP was at least moon level.

Nah, I'd give that title to Tao Pai Pai. He was the first to bring mortality into battles, the first one to fold Goku, and the first one to set a seriois tone like the one Z follows.

If it wasnt for king piccolo and his minions killing krillin, goku likely wouldnt have had the reaction he had to frieza blowing him up, because for goku, that meant krillin was likely dead for good this time. He relapsed into the rage he felt towards king piccolo bearing that responsibility originally.

Plus if King Piccolo didn’t spit out the egg, Dragon Ball Z wouldn’t even exist!

Well said, although I think the most brutal and terrifying villain title goes to Zamasu. He’s the one villain neither goku nor his friends could ever beat(they used every move they had used in their past victories from the spirit bomb sword to the potara earrings but to no avail). Not to mention his crimes outclassed what any past or future dragon ball villains have done: destroying the super dragon balls, killing all the kais and destroyers throughout the multiverse, wiping out all of humanity along with other unspecified planets, and if not prevented by Zeno, destroying all of life in every timeline. This guy is like the dragon ball version of ultron from What If….

Hail to the king. One of Goku’s few kills and one done in anger and desperation. I think it is a deep fridge horror cut that among the villains proxies that are manifested by fear during the TOP mini arch “Forest of Fear” King Piccolo is one. Not Piccolo from the 23ed tournament, not some version that Krillin would have met. King Piccolo . That’s all bc of Goku. Krillin had his own demon to reface. He was killed the first time before he got to see King Piccolo. Goku was scared, at some point, of King Piccolo. Probably from around the time his heart stopped. He was so out gunned for the first time in his life! That’s been deep in the freezer.
