The vicious cycle of student debt in the US

Student debt in the United States now stands at over a trillion dollars. And it’s going up, to the tune of 2,700 dollars per second. FRANCE 24 reporters Philip Crowther and Gallagher Fenwick spoke to Americans struggling to pay back student loans and the lucky few who managed to avoid the debt trap.
Our reporters met current students, parents, teachers, and former students in three states: Maryland, North Carolina, and New Orleans.
In Maryland, FRANCE 24 spoke to Nina Ogor and her mother. After recently graduating from the University of Maryland, Nina still lives at home with her mother. Several small jobs keep Nina afloat, but she earns just 12 dollars an hour. That’s not enough to cover her monthly 1,200 dollar student loan repayment.
She’s not the only one in debt in this household. Her mother is still weighed down by her student loans. Together they owe 150,000 dollars.
Theirs is one of the many shocking examples of student debt accumulated over the years by Americans.
The price of an education in North Carolina, for example, stands at over 120,000 dollars for an out-of-state student. That’s approximately the national average.
Our reporters met one of the few debt-free students at the University of North Carolina in Asheville.
Gray Barrett pays nothing, not a single dollar. He’s one of the lucky winners of the ultimate prize, a full scholarship. Gray happily shows us the complete package on offer at his college. In the USA, a university needs to have it all to attract students and their tuition payments: the sports stadium, the idyllic campus, and all the other bells and whistles necessary to get a young American to sign up for the college experience.
But Gray Barrett is an exception.
Like 70% of all American university students, David Augustine Jr., took out loans to pay for his business studies degree which he completed in 2009. Our reporters met the man now known as Dee-1 in his hometown of New Orleans.
He also owed thousands to Sallie Mae, the company that provides student loans. He became a full-time rapper, and luckily his success enabled him to pay back his loan. David Augustine Jr. has now written a song in which he slams a system that is "out of control". His video, posted in February, was viewed more than a million times in only a week. The Washington Post newspaper even says his hit might be "the anthem for a generation".
The rapper now takes his song to university campuses around the country. And each time it touches a nerve - there are 40 million Americans who still have not paid back their student loans.

From the bottom of my heart and I'm only 20 years old. Just dont pursue it if you cant afford it. College is free for me I actually get a free $2000 a quarter. Due to my moms brains and my hard work. I know people who are depressed because of SLD and college is getting worse professors dont care or have the time for you. It's hard to get a job now lowkey and competition is crazy. Imagine you with no debt even if you're only making 40k a year. Invest create start something. You won't regret it. Get into herbs and organic health to prevent heart disease instead of going to school to try to save someone with a terrible lifestyle and diet. If not then do you. I can only give advice.

@@shannysalcedo3627 It is possible that college education MIGHT increase in value over time, but you'd need to offset that with the interest you incurred on any loans you may have taken out (or that your parents may have paid). In my 50+ years on this planet, I have not seen that occur in most people I've know, including those with professional and post-doc degrees. What does seem to increase in value over time is someone's years of experience and skill set in their specific profession, but what seems to REALLY make the difference is who you know.

That depends on what colleges you're talking about . In California legislators decide to what extent to subsidize CSU and UC. Not the colleges themselves.Given the choice - and a fixed amount to either spend on colleges or prisons. Funding prisons - and maintaining public safety - has been more of a priority. Aside from that, both CSU and UC supplemented their income with foreign students who pay double tuition.

Here we have two ISSUES: 1. Gaining knowledge - you can get knowledge on your own actually and college is not needed in most of the cases. U can buy textbooks even for $1000 and learn the same knowledge at the same level. Especially in regards to humanistic subjects where it’s all based on reading books and conversations. Some problems arise in case of scientific subjects where u need a laboratory, devices etc. 2. Labour market - here we have a negative trend that for many regular office jobs it’s required to have some college education (bachelor’s) degree what is ridiculous when we look at activities and skills needful in those jobs.

I damn sho was not going to pay for anything college wise when my ancestors gave 400+ years of free labor to this country. As a result of my thinking regarding this issue and my strategic planning, not only was I debt free through undergrad and grad school, I got paid to go to school. Earning my degrees was the best thing that happened to me but not if I was going to be buried neck high in debt for a degree.

Try to get some scholarships and start working so that you can pay as you go. And also "Make sure you get a degree that has value". Don't spend 30K or 40K on a degree that you end up making minimum wage. Also, see if you even need a degree in what you want to do. Many people get degrees in something that they didn't even need to go to college for. Have a plan and be intentional. Then the worry will go away because your taking control of the situation.

The government has done a poor job with K-12 schools. As per pupil spending has increased over time, student achievement has either dropped or stagnated. Using the government's subsidy of K-12 as a justification for making college "free" is a lousy argument. Furthermore, your "inbred filth" comment shows your inability to use reasoning to bolster your argument; you have to childishly resort to name calling. Shame on you, especially if you're a teacher.

The athletes get free college tuition. Why shouldn't the actual students? And don't try claiming that it's a pipe dream. My uncle went to USC in the 1960s - and it was free. And though we no longer have tuition-free higher education, we still have tuition-free primary and secondary education. If our tax dollars shouldn't fund education, what should they fund? We are supposed to receive services in exchange for our tax dollars. We're not supposed to pay billions in taxes and receive nothing in return.

Now I am obviously no expert on how this stuff works, but lemme know what you think of this for getting student debts paid...It would be similar to a 401k plan. You contribute say $200 a paycheck towards your student loan. It gets automatically deducted. That $200 becomes nontaxable income for you as the employee and eliminates the FICA taxes the employer would have to pay if that income were taxable. This would give the employee incentive to pay off their student loan faster. And this would give the employer incentive to hire new graduates with student debt. The government is helping by not taxing, but not outright giving handouts. People need to work for the support . Thoughts?
