Luckily I graduated from a vocational highschool, became an electrician and I make $80k a year ( no college degree, no loans) I'm not bragging, just saying that all the trade jobs that people look down at are the ones who are having the last laugh. Sad situation though

Guess what, ironically those same people might call you and need you when they have a black out and they give you a really expensive check while they are making ends meet paying back their six figure loan debt. Secret to no loan debt... My story: Worked for an employer that offered tuition reimbursement. Worked full time, went to school part time. Graduated engineering and chemistry at age 29. No debt. Had a 6-figure job in corporate America for years. My wife and I have 8 children. 6 went to college, 1 in college, one is 13 years old. Wife stayed home, homeshooled our kids. I could afford to have a wife at home and raise 8 kids because I could afford it. Lived in a modest home. No new cars. My kids went to community college for 2 years, then the University of Washington, if they wished, for two years. One got a masters degree out of state, had a scholarship, but I still paid a difference. If you want to go from high school to a 4-year out-of-state University you will get crushed, and more so if you want a masters degree. If the goal is an education that you can use to make a living, then go to a community college where the teachers care about you, and go to a state university for the last two years, live at home (my kids did), and then work your butt off. None of my kids have any college debt. You can do it beloved, you can do it! Avoid debt like the plague! If you are getting ready for school, please heed my words. If you already have a load of debt, don't cry, but get into a Dave Ramsey program. It is your responsibility. The system is rigged against you. Government is the problem. They created this. They will not fix it. Take charge of your life and climb out of the hole the government convinced you to get in to.

They really don’t teach no one this in high school luckily I had a debt avoidance mentality and went to community college for two years then to a state university, all of which was a 15 minute train ride away, lived with my parents and worked full time while I was in community college while going to school full time, currently getting my masters (no student debt) and I have a job offer from an internship for a pretty good salary for someone my age (22), community college was definitely the best decision I ever made so far in my life.

Worked 2 extra jobs and had no life for 2 years. Lived on nothing and sold a bunch of stuff. It sounds rough but was actually a fun adventure. It wasn't a get rich quick scam, it was work and budget. Say no a lot to you're friends, get off social media. Most people will make fun of you but towards the end they look at you like a hero and that you did something they wish they could do... Which they can they just won't sacrifice to win

+BryceJohnson88 i will have 44k in student federal loans and 15k in private loans. I have saved up a good 12k in my savings. By the end of next year I will a good 10k also in my savings. I just hate of all that money going away to pay off my loans. I would rather put that money as a downpayment on an apt. :/

My Needs: food, shelter, love of kids/spouse. Nothing else matters. We will all turn to dust and none of this will matter. I never went to college. I owe for our home. I drive an old paid for car. We buy mostly used. I used to be obsessed about money and stuff. I'm 32 and pretty much happy with my life. My advice; nothing is worth stressing out about.

I worked in high school, during college and ended up with $10k in loans when I graduated. That was in 1998 - when a four year degree was about $40k. I can't imagine do the same now with the cost of education.

I could not afford college. My high school required acceptance into college in order to graduate and promised students that if we graduated college we would be rewarded with high paying jobs. My parents cosigned my private loans because they bought into the idea that if I had a degree then I would never have to work the dirty jobs that they had to work for their whole lives. My college professors even promised students that we would have high paying jobs after graduation. Where are those jobs?

I get so tired of the arguments, “just don’t go to college”, “get a STEM degree”, “work to pay your tuition” or lastly, “know what you sign before you sign”. When my generation(I’m 30) was coming through HS we were taught that if you got a college degree you would earn enough to live a good life. The whole damn world pushes college down your throat, I’m the only college graduate in my family. When you’re 17/18 you don’t know the details surrounding student loans, all you know is you want to go to college to make a better life for yourself.

17/18 years old able to calculate percentages. It is not right that loans are given so irresponsibly, however it is not right to take a loan if you don't understand that you have to pay it back. How is it possible to be mentally alert enough to be able to attend college and in the same time un-able to do basic mats? Please do a strict budget, get a second job if needed, pay back your debt and start building your wealth. You can do it. Complaining may not help you, however creating a plan of your future and working towards it will change your life.

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to go to school to learn most things. Aside from basic reading, writing and math, you can learn almost everything else online.

Additionally, in school, you're forced to learn a whole variety of subjects, which potentially facilitates you in discovering something that you had no idea you were interested in. That being said, it's still not worth taking out a student loan, putting yourself into serious debt, only to graduate without a job.

I'm making $1,000 a week working 14 hour days, 5 days a week, with no college degree, no student loan debt, and I'm actually building my credit up. I work my ass off, I enjoy my job and I don't have to worry about collection companies calling me up EVERY day, wanting to know where their money is. So to money hungry colleges, universities and loan companies, NO THANK YOU. You're not pulling me into your financial traps, especially with no guaranteed jobs out there.

In my 20+ years of being a "good student" in "good schools", I was required to learn a lot of subjects, including philosophy, kinesiology, and religion, but no one taught me about promissory notes, mortgages, taxes, and other things that impact quality of life. Do you know that our children are graduating high school without even being taught how to email? In 2014.

exactly this. In my high school, I was supposed to learn all the bullshit, like what the 95 theses were in history, why chaucer wrote a 500 page book, etc etc, and write 3 pages of useless papers. Instead of teaching us practical, real life skills we can use even during high school, like accounting, importance of debt management, how to trade stocks (to make $ on the side), etc.

I took economics in high school. We monitored stocks and did mock investments. I learned about student loan debt. Maybe that is why I took out under $15,000 for both degrees. I officially had it paid off 6 years after I got my Master's degree. So they do offer these classes. In fact in Maryland I think Economics is mandatory for graduation.

They don't want kids to understand this stuff. The system wants them to end up in debt. The us public school system (for the most part) does not produce adults prepared for life and capable of critical thinking.

I didn't go to college because my family was poor. Now these people expect me as a tax payer to pay for their education. My son graduated with a BS and Masters Degree in math with zero college loans. He worked his way through school. The people in this video should have done the same.

I got 80% of my tuition paid for, and worked 3 jobs in school. I still needed to take out student loans. I had no financial help from parents in anyway. The first four years after college went well. Then I was disabled for 6 years (meaning officially disabled receiving SSDI which only enough to cover basic survival). Upon recovery my loans were doubled. I went to graduate school with almost full scholarship, I paid a couple grand out of pocket, no loans. When I graduated in 2008, good luck finding employment. I worked with the disabled but they cut funding and lost those jobs. I worked independently selling things on eBay since then which was subsistence income. My loans are now tripled. During the time I was not officially disabled, I still have a disability which means I worked around it the best I could. There are so many problems with the student loan system. The biggest problem is the loans are a Wall Street product. There is very little incentive to change the system or forgive loans or restore bankruptcy protection. Another problem is young people with certain talents and career goals have been told over and over "it will all be worth it". The students and the American citizens takes all the risks. Banks, Wall Street, and the schools take NO risks. It is guaranteed for THEM. There are much better ways to make schools affordable. Scrapping the student loan system all together would be good. In the EU the schools remain affordable. A degree there at most will cost approximately 10,000. Private schools are also affordable at most 30,000 and what they do is take the money out of your income for ten years if you are making a certain amount. It is different than loans with high percentage rates that can't be discharged. The current system is immoral. And 18 year olds are being suckered into a product that often does not do them well and is riskier than they tell you for many. This is predatory lending. A millionaire Trump can have his businesses declare bankruptcy 4 times. But students can't declare bankruptcy at all. This is deplorable.

This is actually a legitimate question that I have. What if I just left the country permanently and went to live somewhere else? My parents are from another country and I have lots of family there as well as citizenship through my parents. It is a wonderful place to live and I could have a really nice life there. No one else is tied to my debt here in the US and I could always just come to visit as I am a citizen here too. I am seriously considering this option.

The debt would just continue to grow.it will never go away. If u are a citizen u are required to file taxes on foreign debt. There's people that have tried it. Just be careful on what kind of income u make in the other country. Also make sure u don't have a co signer on ur debt or they will go after the co signer first.

My Pell grant, state need based scholarship, working and a budget allowed me to graduate debt free, I repeated this for grad school - I saw folks spend like mad while in school on shopping, trips, luxury apartments, eating out daily, and nice cars. I knew a girl who was paying out of state rate, using loans to fund school and really wanted to stay in school another year to be with their friends... like not even thinking of getting their first job out of school and living in the area or critically thinking about the $ they have to pay back. No debt forgiveness without people owning their choices. It should be examined like bankruptcy court.

Only in american will you bail out a bank and corpations but not people hope your proud of your self's

What you believe to be a sound financial decision may not necessarily be the same to me. That’s all subjective. You might think buying a house is a good decision when I don’t feel the same at the moment in my life. Going to college and being able to make something of yourself in whatever you want to do is a good decision. Taking out loans and funding your education isn’t a bad or a good move. It has its traps and it’s problems but it can also have its benefits. Not all people who take out loans get to reap the benefits of funding an education. The world is rapidly changing. The job markets are changing, the economy is adjusting all the time. Nothing is consistent. Some people can make ends meet and make those payments even when they are getting screwed over. And trust me, any bank that lends you money is screwing you over because you pay it back with interest whether you want to or not. And that’s the issue at hand, interest accrues daily on a loan. Federal loans are easier to pay off because of the benefit of getting lower payments based on financial situation. Private Student loans are the biggest problem. They offer no assistance, and very little room to breath. This type of loan is a dangerous one. Not many people understand or know this because at the time of signing for the loan, you aren’t made aware of the problems with Private Loans. You don’t get told that if you need lower payments, you won’t get that assistance. The loan company can make your life a living hell even when you pay on time and in full. They want interest and sometimes they will raise your interest rates to a point where you can’t even make affordable payments anymore. So don’t make judgements at people who are only trying to live their life the best they can. It’s a huge injustice to people like you and me when these banks decide to take your money with tons of interest tacked on to an original amount. If you take out $10K with a private loan, you’ll most likely be paying double that because of interest rates. You can’t control it. It’s not possible. Most people are aware of this until they are forced to take out a private loan. Do you not understand that? Why is this such a difficult issue to understand? It’s not just lazy people not wanting to pay back their loans. If this is what you think you’re profoundly wrong.

Every upper middle class happy vacation taking, muscle car driving, fancy dinners out having, discretionary income spending, 401 k filled person I know is in a trade. Electrician, fitter, plumber, steel worker etc. Every down and out debt up to their ears, broken down prius driving, living with their parents well into their 30s, credit card maxed out, no retirement savings is someone who chased higher education along with studies abroad on some really useful humanities majors. At best, they get jobs at Starbucks. I tip em well

I am no genius, but I was never stupid enough to get myself in $50,000 of debt. I went to a Commnity College, and then a State university. I am about to finish my Master's degree with $11,000 of total student debt. I'll pay it off in 8 years. Why is this so hard for others to do?

If it were really that simple, no one would do any of this, but unfortunately your comment is just a pipe dream versus reality. It’s not that simple. People still go to college and that still and admirable quality but our times are changing. People need to be better educated on the pros and cons, that’s how it changes.

It's grievous to witness what BA (BS, etc.) & MA (MS, MLS., etc.) students today must endure for an university education. I'm 70 now, so I was a student of 1960s, beginning of 1970s univ. ed.. I paid such tiny tuition as undergrad at U. Mass. at Boston! Education was nearly free, really (& that was without scholarships, although I did have Vet benefits). At Kent State U., I went on on to MLS degree, still with Vet ben., aid & stipend. I worked in those years too but graduated debt free. Lucky!

It has been just over a year since I paid off my student loan. I felt like I could finally plan for the future - buy a home, have a family and save. My life on hold when I had this student loan over me. I feel for others who still have their loans over their heads and all I can say is not to give up and think of that light at the end of the tunnel.

I rather not go to college than go in debt. I can go for a 2year degree in a community college and working to pay for classes till I graduate. The reason why people go in debt for education is more because of prestige

There are cheaper ways to go to school, these ppl did not do enough research. I were to Uni for one year and said yea, this is not for me and went to college and instead paid under 10k for 2 years for a tech job.

I was 18 years old when I walked out of the financial aid office in tears when I was told it would cost me $5,000 a year in loans. I knew I did not have the money to pay that and my parents don’t have money either to pay up front. So I went to the school I did not like. Accepted my fate. Stop complaining! Can’t always blame others for your lack of judgement.

this is sad, people go to college to better their lives and end up worse than the guy who dropped out in high school and now has a longer work history, and they now have to work next to him with their piece of paper that says they are ''smarter''. sad.

Next time you get yourself into a commitment and sign on the dotted line, read the contract and understand what your getting into. Most people just want to get the car, the house, go to college, and they never read what they are getting into. If you don't understand it, get an attorney to interrupt it, or get someone who is knowledgeable to explain it. When someone wants you to take a loan, or a contract they want something from you. Most of it isn't in your best interest.

Ace1000ks1975 this right here is the best advice. You have to read your contracts and stipulations. Kids and eager people wanting to change their life for better is always admirable but you have to take the time to do the research and gain an understanding of what’s expected of you to fund an education. The rising of interest rates is the biggest culprit for why people can’t make payments. Interest makes everything worse about a loan. I believe most people would pay back their loans if interest wasn’t such a huge problem.

As a lawyer myself, I struggle to understand how you attend law school without researching the average income of attorneys in the private and public sector (big difference) in your area. Being a lawyer does not automatically equal being rich. Far from it.

I never went to College because I never consider myself has a smart person and plus I never have money to go anyway so after High School I started to work at the McDonald with my first job than I leave and find another job that pay $15 per hour (currently employed) and I been working for 8 years now and save about 40 thousand dollars on saving account in case something happen to my current job (layoff, closed down). I think about my future because I know that if peoples around me disappear I will be alone but at least I got the expanded money to support myself in case shit go wrong.

Now peoples think I'm a loser that never have College education. I don't want to waste my money something that I can't achieve in other word I am afraid to fail and wasted my time. That why I just continue to keep on working and put away at least $100 on my saving account when paycheck come on Thursday, $50 dollar on checking (depend on the situation), and $30 dollar pocket money for a week the rest I save it up to pay bill on monthly rent, phone,car insurance, utilities, etc I wish I live for free LMAO. But anyway that why I don't consider myself "smart" because I never went to College. I am not saying all College are smart but at least they have a College Degree to show for and make peoples around them proud and I don't (peoples keep saying I should go to College) and I feel like a total loser :(.

Charles Hart I worked at a insulation company for two years to save up for a trade school learning how to pipe weld for a year(about $7,000) and now I have a job making 28 an hour working 12 hour days repairing boiler tubes at power plants. Easily bringing in 70k + a year with no debt and no one to take care of but myself.

Bruce R. Cool man good to hear I went to college and it was a good experience and I do have a minimal amount of debt but, I wish someone would of sat me down to weigh the alternatives. Right now I am learning welding part time outside of work and its enjoyable because you are making something. Best part about it is that there is always a need.

I joined the navy specifically to get the Gi Bill. It sucked a lot of the times, but I got out and went to school in California for free and got a huge living stipend every month. Just graduated and make $96k now debt free. Best decision I ever made was to join the military.

Its a lie and it will never work. You will hear people say things like..."well, I'm the first in my family to go to College". Ok, so that means they were all dummies? Soferia Nebruin I agree there were powers to be behind all this. When I saw the bankruptcy laws being changed (lobbied) and they were leaving student loans off the books I knew the fix was in. But you can't tell people these things. But then again the forces are so strong out there. Everyday these people are getting hit with "college or beggar" from every angle. Its tough to rise above that.

What is think we should do with lower education (K-12) is make more vocational training programs integrated into high schools. That way, more students will more easily get the job skills they actually need for careers of today!

I'm so sick of being told that if I did what I was told, I would come out of college making a living, but instead, I am working part-time and living off of my Dad in a rented room at age 26. I graduated from Vanderbilt University in Biology, and I have basically chosen to go teach English in South Korea for $20,000 a year. I hope to learn their language and find a TRUE job in a REAL moving economy. The future lies not in our grandpa's USA.

I'm amazed a lawyer was unaware that the interest would be accrued to the loan while in forbearance. Moral of the story is be very aware of what you sign for. No sympathy for anybody who does not bother to understand a contract they sign. Free money does not exist.

listen, I went into the bank to get a credit card and when they saw I was a student, they told me I needed a loan. I refused because I didn't need it at the time and I knew from other people that those people are looking for commissions and don't give a crap about you or what you need. Keep your debt as low as you can or you'll be another slave to the banks.

I've taken a vow to never take out a loan in my life because I knew from get that they were a rip off. I will never loan money in order to get an education, it either has to come out of the money I already have at my disposal or from scholarships.

I have no student loan and no Bachelor degree but and i have a 6 figure income because I'm hard headed and I worked hard to get the job I have now. At the end it is not a piece of paper it is the skills you earned in jobs over the years. My degree from Germany is compared to a associates degree here in US but all my supervisors I had in the past couple years tell me that this degree is worth much more than a bachelor degree from one of this worthless university's. Education is not a right it is a privilege and not everybody has the brain to go to a university but everybody can build up skills to get a good paying job if he or she wants.

My life is a nightmare from student loans.... I think about killing myself everyday because I'm sick of going to work for absolutely no reason... My debt is going to kill me one way or another

Awww, life didn't turn out the way you wanted it to. I had to work through crap jobs. I still took certifications and tried to broaden my knowledge. I attended workshops. This is the problem with youth nowadays, they want everything handed to them. If it doesn't work for you, expect someone else to do it for you and/or quit. You signed on the dotted line. You made that decision.

They didn't give enough information for you to be so judge mental. Maybe they are working a crap job or two of them. Maybe they worked very hard in school and couldn't find a job in their field. The possibilities are endless what they have done and still didn't make it. The system we've put in place is hurting a lot of people who did what they were supposed to. Give people a break, it's not every single persons fault if they are suffering.

at 20:32 as of now he is NOT asking for a 700 billion bail out, it is NOW a 1.5 trillion bail out. If we forgive student loans, it would in fact encourage next wave of young people to get into even more student loans thinking tax payer would eventually bail him out. University will charge even MORE tuition. If you really want to fix the problem, I propose the following Put a cap on how much a school is allowed to charge student for tuition and room and board (like 20K/year), if a private school insist on charging more for tuition, then simply disqualify the student loan program for that university, "Meaning student attending that university will NOT be qualified to get a federal loan, and the student would have to get a private loan. And Private loans can be dismissed thru bankruptcy. But Many many student would NOT qualify for private loan. This would mean the student would have NO way of paying for tuition and would have to drop out and go to a different university.

I left school at 17 because I was poor (doing well now). I don't want your debt paid off with my tax. You should pay for your mistakes and let me pay for my own life.

consider a community college, then transferring to a state College. Also consider working while in school. just some things to consider!

I am a marine corps vet using post 911 gi bill, my gf just graduated from a 4 year with 0 debt because she was unqualified (too low income) to apply for loans. I guess we dodged the debt bullet, I hope everyone else is doing ok.

So thankful when I went to University back in 81, you were only allowed to borrow a small portion of your tuition. The student was responsible to contribute if you applied for aid. They should never allow for people to borrow the whole amount for tuition. Now we're 1 trillion in debt due to Students borrowing excessive amounts.

Part 2: My Professor is pressuring me to take out a loan & continue school. Apart of me says it's importance to discipline myself further. I feel there's so much to learn about art, so I'm not done. But the other part of me feel that these professors purposely want students to fall into debt because in many ways, they seem to work with the system. Personal reasons get into the way of me receiving a regular job, & my mother & step-dad are trying to support the household the best they can.

Dont get a worthless degree ie anything in Humanities or Liberal Arts. The only degrees worth getting are anything in the medical field and some science degrees. Other than this, college is toilet paper.

Some of these guys need to share a room or move back in with their parents if they are unable to afford the rent. Having your own place is luxury.

Oh c'mon! $1,000.00 month for rent?? Well, that's one big problem! Also, "I didn't know what forbearance meant..." --Uhh well figure it out! Duh!

The only way to bring tuition down is to introduce new competition that is more affordable. The ONLY way universities will reduce tuition is if those seats become empty and they need to fill them.

Synapse2k I think it would actually lower tuition costs if you could declare bankruptcy on it. Lenders would be more discerning about who they actually give loans to. If more people would be ineligible for the loans, tuition would have to go down in order for schools to stay in business. I guess we’ll never know which scenario is right because they will never allow that to happen.

Pell grants only pay for books? Pell grants are like $5500!!!! What books are you buying?

Parents must talk to their kids. I graduated 10 years ago with my BA. I taught for 5 years at Title 1 school. I taught SPED. I got both my degrees for $14,082. I made 6 years of payments after I got my Master's degree. The Teacher Loan Forgiveness plan forgave the remaining balance on my loans. I have 3 kids I'm saving for college for. I ONLY plan on sending them to trade school. I would ONLY pay for a 4 year degree in a STEM, Finance, Business, Medical, Forensic Science, Dental, OT, or Speech degree. I'm NOT paying for a crappy and or artisty degree. Those jobs don't exist! #FACTS

Stacy Jackson I grew up with nothing! Was in fostercare! I want my kids to achieve more then I did! My husband's an immigrate came from El Salvador. Money is a fact of LIFE. Choosing a crappy major my kids would have to work to pay for that. If they choose a trade like plumbing, electrician, mechanic, etc... I would be happy! Or like I said a STEMM job. College isn't the time to find yourself or to mind your mission in life. Hard decidons and detailed planning are needed for life. Being broke in debt and living with your parents is not the way to go in LIFE. And I definitely have shown my kids how to live frugally shop at Walmart, coupons, cook food at home, take hand me down clothes and shoes. If I buy shoes I goto Payless with a 15% coupon. I'm trying to build wealth. You might not know but its a huge wealth gap in America not just between the 99% and the 1%, but all among the different racial groups. The average Hispanics family has 10% the wealth as the average White family. So being happy and all is good but will continue my family being broke and venerable in LIFE!

That's a great plan! I'm not even gonna waste my time in college because I'm only interested in the liberal arts. However, make sure you don't crush your kids dreams too much. If they don't want to go into a STEM field or a trade, try to help them get an alternative plan together.

I think we should take the liberal arts out of college all together. When you think about it, nobody really cares about the arts. I mean nobody listens to music, watches T.V., movies etc., wears jewelry or fashionable clothes, goes to museums or to the theater, nobody really reads books for fun anymore. (if they can read or write at all)I believe it is time to get rid of all the library's as well because who would really want to work there to help you look for those books? Also, I think all the history teachers just need to find other more productive jobs because we don't need to know our history....we just need to know where we are going...and the pictures in those books that we like to teach out of...those medical illustrations...who would want to waste their time illustrating or even taking those pictures? By the way, who needs the news, who cares what's going on in the world? I think everyone should go into other fields making the liberal arts obsolete, then we call live happily ever after doing the things we all truly love to do.

You do raise a good point. I think we all have gifts and skills and there is absolutely nothing wrong with finding and developing your skills in other areas rather than school. You do need to be able to do well in school. A lot of that is dedication. I know many many people who just say they don't care about grades, never learned how to work hard because school was too easy/boring, or just are interested in doing other things...and that is ok people just need to be honest with themselves.

As soon as the federal government stops giving school loans, the prices of tuition will go down. If they keep doing it, the prices of tuition will keep rising.

My accounting degree in Australia totals up to $25k in total in Australia. You Americans get ripped off but that doesn't matter with all the knowledge you gathered in college Start business and some money.

College is mostly a scam unless your doing a major that can be used in the real world. I have no regrets in dropping out of college. I found a better career opportunity with guaranteed pay, job security and advancement.

If you don't have the money or the means of making the money, don't take out a loan.

who knew that staying at my job at costco would benefit me more than going to college? i make a pretty good living as a floor manager, and i have 0 student debt. seeing friends with massive amounts of student loan debt just amazes me. although, i do wish i did go to college only for the experience and to be able to learn as much as i could. i didn't think it would be like this for so many. sad though how much shit one has to go through just for wanting to learn. knowledge should be free.

Do any people think of working and saving up first and go to school? I live in Japan and parents and family try hard to save up money for kids' college. Many kids start working part-time job around 16 if parents don't have enough financial supports, so they can prepare for school. If they still don't have enough, then they don't go to college first, but work firt untill they can save up enough. Also, while they work, they might get more better idea about whether they need to go to college or what they want and need to learn at college.

I remember wanting to go to school at Ross medical. Long story short I was sitting in front of the loan officer and they needed my signature for a $18,000 loan which felt ludicrous to me. Said screw it and got a job as a hvac tech making $10 more an hour then I would in that feild. Zero debt too. Always options, and trust your gut

College is a choice. NO ONE forced these people to go. And why didn't they just go to a community college and then transfer to a state school which is much cheaper. At age 18 you should understand simple numbers.

Theirs always a second job after college. Deliver pizza 20 hrs a week and 1000$ extra a month. Sometimes the work does not end after we graduate

I came from a single parent household, and payed my own way thrugh a small cheep local college. I got no help from my parents, just paid my own way by working part time while in college and working on fishing boats during the summer. It can be done debt free... Just don't expect to go to a really expensive school.

Number one thing to be emphasized. Student loans are very easy to get, VERY. Why? Because they are not eligible for bankruptcy discharge. If you fail to comprehend that and the possible implications and risk, you are not suitable for college.

My starting salary was 60 grand per year with a 2 year degree from a community college which I paid in cash.

So many bitter people. Take some responsibility for your life. You signed up for that debt, you pay it back.

It actually benefits a country to have college educated citizens and therefore it would be a good idea for countries to pay for all their citizen's tuition. May sound crazy but well developed countries such as Gremany (5th wealthiest nation), Brazil (7th wealthiest), and France (9th wealthiest) are already doing just that.

For those who go to medical school: Do not fall into this trap, you could find yourself still with student loan debt when you are 50. Avoid the temptation to adopt a Doctor Lifestyle. Live frugally. Continue this into residency, if at all possible start making student loan payments as soon as possible. As soon as you land your first " real doctor job" resist the urge to elevate your lifestyle. People will bombard you with contacts for realtors, financial advisors. Ignore this and continue a modest lifestyle. I did this, paid off my med school loans within 18 months. It was well worth the sacrifices made AND these frugal habits helped me to really appreciate those lifestyle upgrades when I could truly afford them. I have never regretted becoming debt free.

Never blame others for your problems. The greatest form of maturity is accepting full responsibility. If you say that you didn't know that a Bachelors of Arts is worthless, that's your fault. Ignorance is not bliss.

+reardelt apparently a bachelors in accounting and IT is also worthless, even when graduating with honors, since i cannot get a job in the field i got my degree in. btw, YOU will be paying for my tuition bill through increased taxes, not me, since i have no job with which to pay. next time, create an economy that allows people to get a job with decent wages instead of trying to whore all the money to yourself. im waiting for the masses of this country to refuse to repay the 1.3 trillion dollars of student loan debt, and thus crash the economy and your precious country along with it. you dont want to be compassionate? why should we?

I myself have loans. I read the contract and knew exactly what was coming before hand. I can't feel bad for these people. There were a couple contracts I ripped up when I was shopping around namely one from a company called SaeMallie. I have loans fixed at 4% and those are private loans through my state bank. They have generous repayment terms and the other loans are my federal loans. Had a loan through Wells Fargo. Should have it paid off by August. Interest sucks but hey I signed so whatever. Pay up and pay attention prior to signing. I also found an affordable school, networked and also did a realistic comparison of expected income. Student loans are useful if you don't let them become an issue. There are good loan terms out there. People have to shop.

Well congrats to you! Sadly, you are a minority. It’s great that you figured out how to play the game but please remember that many of us simply were not as lucky as you. We were desperately trying to find a way out of poverty. We were already struggling and these loans were a way out. Unless you have walked in our shoes then please reserve your judgement. It’s great that you were spared, enjoy it.

Oh those poor Master's degree students choosing to stay in school even longer for more money. Why not just gain work experience using your bachelor's and then do a Master's part time at a later date with money you saved instead of using money you borrowed? Because that would be less fun in the immediate future.

The sad thing about these kids racking up all this debt to go to college is that many come out making less than I do. But unlike them I don't have 10's of thousands of student loan debt. If you are going to college make sure you become a doctor or lawyer. Anything else you can pretty much get in trade school or just learn on the job without a degree.

5:45 - i'm sick of journalism majors. They aren't needed. Too many kids go in thinking they'll become the next big thing, crack a big story and become famous, or do easy shit like being a music reviewer or other hipster silliness

+decimated550 people are not practical. I am not paying for someone's dreams of success the FAILED. I am upset with the parents too. This isn't something that just happened to a person. A person volunteers to be a slave. They picked the school and signed they life away. A person needs to take responsibility for their choices. Attending College is a choice and which college you attend is a choice.
