Tuition fees at US universities are three times higher than they were 30 years ago. The average price for a year of college was $34,000 for the 2017-2018 school year. These sky-high prices force many students to take out loans. According to the Federal Reserve, student debt has gone up by 150% in ten years to reach a whopping $1.5 trillion. Some economists are worried the debt bubble will burst and snowball into a new financial crisis. Our US correspondent Fanny Allard reports.

This guy was afforded the luxury of not having to pull out student loans. Of course this guy sees nothing wrong with the tuition... because he isn't paying for it. Kids who have parents who can pay for their education don't realize the value of the dollar until they are cut off and on their own. With mommy and daddy paying your expenses of course you're going to agree, like wtf.

Apparently Georgetown didn't prepare this numbskull to do basic math. He's investing $312,000 to get back $55,000 a year. Where he could invest just $36,000 over 4 years and make $40,000 a year. So he invested an extra 272,000 to make an extra $15,000 per year. That don't add up. At the school costing just $36,000 you're making your investment back in one year. For the marginal extra 272,000 dollar investment it will take you 18 years at that rate to recoup your investment. In conclusion, this dude is a moron. That's an 1,800% difference. Sure, his income will project at a faster rate over the long run and that will eat up some of the difference; but we're still talking about being under water many times over versus the cheaper alternative.

All while they sit in college four to five years going deep into debt most of the time students aren't working or making any kind of money other than maybe some minimum wage summer work for a few weeks a year. So they are getting hit from both sides. I would venture your figure is much higher, but I'm sure you've heard the BS that a college graduate makes 1million dollars more a year over a non college educated person.

Something they fail to mention about the people they interviewed, their majors. It makes no sense to be paying 70k a year to get a degree in history or something equally useless when it comes to potential income after graduating. The second one really bothered me as they didn't mention what her degree ultimately was and the fact that she went to a private school she couldn't afford instead of a public one even after the government granted her what could have been up to 60k+ to cover the difference. They mention how 1/3 of her income goes to her 34K in loans per month, but doesn't say how much that actually is. As someone who paid off my own student loans that started at 27k, my monthly payments were just under 400$. Hers should be somewhere around 600-650$. So she has a job in the "pharmaceutical industry" making only 25K a year? They never mention any critical specifics regarding any of the graduates or the student interviewed and are trying to paint this picture like their individual choices helped put them in the spots they're in. College is worth it if you are practical about it. Go to a school you can afford or limit the amount of debt you take on by not going out of state or to a private university where the degree is worth no more than a public university. Don't spend more per year on a degree for a field that has an average income lower than your yearly cost of attendance (would honestly say the 4 year's cost but there are some like becoming a doctor that can get ridiculously expensive and their earning potentials vary dramatically depending on experience and subfamily). It's fine if you have a passion for the arts or something, but unless you have ridiculous talent and connections, it isn't something you should be trying to make a career out of.

There was no tuition debt - but it took a long time to climb the ladder. People who take on tuition debt, typically reach that higher pay level much faster. The bottom line is this: You will pay one way or the other. Pay with your time, or pay with your money... you will still pay. *NOTE - All degrees are not created equally. And I chose something that I know will get me a job and steady income. Not some liberal studies, art, or other area where I'll struggle to get a job. Don't do what you want to do. Ok, I am going to get straight to the point: 01:21 : Pretty 01:27: Pretty 01:28: He thinks he is going to get some "high paying" jobs. But then goes on to say Average Income is 55,000/per year 01:34 (which is barely enough these days after taxes and 401K contributions). Georgetown costs 78K per year 00:27. Do any of these kids know basic math? How are they going to pay over 200K with 55K/per year job unless they are planning to delay buying homes and having families into their mid 40s?

4 year schools are nowhere near worth what you pay for it. 100k for an education that you were told you needed to be successful. Now you're struggling to pay back what you owe. Its sad man hopefully people smarten up soon. I know I had to. Switched from my 4 year school to a community college. Basically free with financial aid besides books and I get to work while going to school. Even if I wasn't getting aid I would be able to afford it while working which is great.

Someone with six figure debt for a bachelors is a major outlier (I'd still be in favor of writting off that debt). It is annoying how news reports like this tend to talk about the most extreme and, in many cases, the most unsympathetic cases. The real face of student debt crisis is the person who did go to community college and state school and worked while studying and still ends up with 10k, 20k, 30k in debt as a millstone around their neck. One can moralize all they want about debt but when we multiple this situation a few million times over, we see social and political instability, demographic disaster and economic stagnation in our future.

The young man thinks a 4 year undergrad degree that costs $320,000 and nets a starting job salary of $55,000 is "fair". Spoken like someone whose parents paid for their school. With much less expensive schools that nets you a similar starting salary that statement is laughable.

In this internet era, education cost can be 100 times lower. People should study from home in many branch of knowledge. And then everyone takes an annual common test to control quality of graduate.
