This approach is basically rote learning. Logically we can start with the curve y=x^2. This is a parabola [ easy to verify from the locus definition of a parabola ! ], whose vertex is at ( 0, 0 ). We can then translate [ move sideways or up and down ] the curve y=x^2 horizontally a distance H and vertically a distance V and the translated curve is moved to (y-V) = (x-H)^2. The point (H,V) is the vertex of the translated curve.

I would argue that is still rote learning. You didnt explain at all WHY doing what you did to the equation changes the vertex of the curve.
