Converting a Quadratic Function From Standard Form to Vertex Form (Completing the Square)
Learn how to convert a quadratic function from standard form to vertex form by completing the square. We will go through 3 examples of increasing difficulty to help you learn this concept. We are taking the standard form of y= ax^2 + bx + c and transforming it to y=a(x-h)^2 + k.

0:27 Example 1: y=x^2 + 6x - 8
2:20 Example 2: y=2x^2 -8x + 1
4:48 Example 3: y= -(1/2)x^2 - 4 + 3

What I like most about your teaching method is that during the lesson you point out where students often make mistakes (and I do make these mistakes all the time) and it helps a lot to know. Thanks.

hi sir can we also do it by instead of completing the square using x cordinate of the vertex formula plug it into function and get y cordinate of the vertex and plug those values into y=a(x-h)^2+k ???
Thanks Mario. I aced my Maths final exams.

At the end of example 3, what happened to the +16
I am stuck. My equation is f(x)=3x^2+18x+21 So have to divide 18 by 2 which gives me 9 and then I have to divide that by 2 and then square that but I get a decimal. I dont know how to go about that, if anyone could help me that would be great.

Ella...first step subtract 21 to other side of equation. 2nd step factor out 3. 3rd step complete the square by taking half of 6 and squaring it. 4th step add not 9 but 27 to the other side (3 times 9)....hope that gets you started...
can i ask how if the question is f(x)=x2-2x-2 how do i factor (x2-2x)2 2 cannot be factored
