The Value Scale in Graphite Pencil

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This is a great tutorial video on how to use just one pencil to make 10 different darknesses/lightnesses, or the VALUE SCALE. I've included all kinds of tips and tricks, like how to layer, how to move your page, how to use a kneaded eraser to lighten values, etc. I know this one will be helpful for a lot of budding artists. And this is a go-to exercise to strengthen your mastery over your graphite pencils, so it is a favorite of mine to practice over and over again.

Hi thanks for the video from fast few days I am struggling a lot on shading but frustrated because of not able to get correct value of shading and small clarification needed before I start it again is it fine to start applying pressure from starting to get darker or layer by layer and is it ok if the shading is shining for light please clarify it will boost me to move on

Yes you can apply more pressure from the start to get darker values. I still build them layer by layer, as I don't want to press too hard right away as it will dent the page and not apply graphite evenly. I add layers to make an even coat of even pressure, and change directions so I don't get stripe marks in the paper. The darkest value (10) will be shiney as graphite is shiney, but the other values won't. Keep going! Good luck!

How is the 3B darker than the 8B?

Hi Irene, I think you're seeing glare on the shine of the 8B value scale so it looks lighter than the 3B at this camera angle, but it's equal in darkness. Graphite when totally pressed hard creates a shine. Does that make sense?

LZM Studio oh ok. If they both get to the same darkness then what’s the difference between the two? Thanks for the response!

@@Reeniepie the 8B will get darker faster with fewer layers. The 3B can often get that dark (depending on the brand of pencil you use) but it takes more pressure and more layers to get there!
