do you have anything specific to left handers..like i kno calligraphy requires a bit different approach depending on the angle of the hand placement ? thk you

The biggest thing is that when you're drawing start on the right side of the paper and move toward your left side so that you don't smudge as much. Otherwise, with drawing, there isn't as much of a challenge for my left-handed students as there is when writing - and all these techniques will work for lefties as well as righties!

So you don't recommend holding the pencil in the "under the palm" or "overhand grip" position?

It's ok if you're standing and sketching on a drawing board/easel. If you're at a table, that could promote carpel tunnel problems- so if you're drawing a lot I don't recommend that. That method of holding a pencil gives you less control as you're primarily using larger muscle groups, so less detail likely to happen. Good to develop in standing, broad arm stroke drawings- but not the best for hyper detail, smaller drawings.

All these things make a difference. I got carpal tunnel from holding a guitar neck and twisting my hand around it. Going numb in 15 minutes. The usual surgery.
