Hmmmm. Concerning trend in the comments. First, this is not an ad. This is a loan unit, sent from IFI. Neither Drop nor IFI is paying me. Nor asking me to say anything (except for the disclaimer about the pre-production status). I am however, part of Drop and Amazons Affiliate Programs, as disclosed in the description of every video. Second, if the video feels different and scripted... It is. I am trying a new filming style of video, using longer focal length and moving locations more often (always trying to better the content on the channel). - The scripting helps me make more jokes, and keep on track (especially when changing from location to location) with topics and information I might otherwise forget. However, my implementation of this is not the best, as it's one of the first times doing it. And, I see how it could seem more "ad-ish", though, not the intended feeling, I will make corrections to try to avoid it in the future. To address some specific questions I saw in the comments that I did not cover in this video specifically. This over 789? - For raw sound quality/power, no reason. Other reasons could be size, looks, EQ adjustments (if you don't/Cannot run EQ). I did not say it was better. I just said it outputs about the same power at 300 ohms specifically. So if you have a 6xx, the choice between the amps comes down to you desired features. This or Asgard? Depends. Asgard will drive more power demanding headphones, but will not be so good with high efficiency headphones, like IEMS. So, if you have really hard stuff, get Asgard or 789. Those will be the most versatile for more headphones. Using this Amp on the 58X - Sure! Sounds great, however, generally speaking, the 58X doesn't really need an amp in the same way that the 6XX does. So, to clarify my poorly constructed thoughts here - The Amp, is NOT the best on the market at this price (overall). It MIGHT be the best amp at the price for the 6XX exclusively, depending on your desired features.(If you only want single ended, THX or Asgard are better). The DAC, like I said in the video - Not worth it. (unless you REALLY want the stack). Even though it performs as it should. - J

Thank you! I questioning the review in some areas as well actually and while watching the review. (Before reading comments) But as you said you're trying a different format to your video making which I'm happy you're still interested in doing. At one or two points in the video I questioned if I was even listening to a Joshua Velour video because it felt so different.. kind of off turning tbh. This alleviates all my worries about the video. Thanks Josh. I know it's kind of a pain to disclose that the video is not a paid ad from ifi.. but truthfully I think all this could be avoided if there was some sort of text or voice over disclosure at the beginning of the video to inform users that it's not a paid advert. Still keeping my 789 and Ananda.

Thanks, Joshua, I appreciate the extra effort and care you put into your videos. I do wish you would have gotten into detail about the sound signature of the amp especially with the 6xx. Also, I was curious about what that 3D button does. PS. Could you do a video on MQA. I think this stack is going to be how a lot of people get exposed to it.

You're wise to all this internet baloney, truly a cut above the rest in intelligence I wager, all your friends and colleagues must respect you very much Fact of the matter is that even if someone were to be able and willing to EQ these (which is far from everyone who owns a 6xx), and was able to tune them just as well or better than what iFi has done, there is still a real use case where these can be implemented in scenarios where you are connecting directly to an analog source like a phono amp from a turntable where otherwise implementing EQ wouldn't be practical or advisable

Interesting if one is on a tight budget. After much reading, I became fascinated by the scaling capacity of the HD6XX, an aspect that is widely discussed by reviewers who can compare different amplifiers. These headphones have a high performance ceiling, so given top-flight amplification, how good would they sound? For that reason, I eventually bought the SPL Phonitor se and the results are fantastic. At this level, there is no need to bother with possible future upgrades. I can concentrate on the music only: it is ideal for me.

Great review, I actually was able to pick up the Signature stack for $170 each on ebay costing $340 which I find more reasonable. already owning the regular IFI Zen Can and Dac stack, I was able to compare the sound difference. After going back and forth with both stacks, I must say the Signature Can does sound much better then the regular Can. I can hear the sound is fuller and brighter on the Signature stack and the bass is also more pronounced. I needed to have bass boost on all the time on the original Zen Can, to get what is the normal sound of the Signature Can, which offered a richer fuller sound. I actually shipped back the normal IFI Zen Can/Amp back.

I think people get carried away with all the options. I’m a musician and also have been lookin at DACs and amps for some light referencing of songs That other amp you mentioned I have seen is apparently very straight forward sounding , clinical as some would say , like a magni or Hersey from schiit audio, just more powerful. I understand a more powerful amp can deliver sound better even if you don’t need all the power. That being said some people act like they need the most powerful amp ever , I’m not sure why unless they are trying to go deaf. I also don’t understand who is really listening to music with inner ear monitors lmao . But I have the ifi hip dac. I enjoyed the bit of warmth it has. I use it w it u my Sennheiser’s 600. It’s warm and totally articulate, it’s clear as you need it to be. But has warmth to it. Think of it as cozy . I just ordered the zen dac and zen can , not the drop versions, the regular ones to see how much better it can sound. They also offer different firmware to change the tone of the sound. The question is do you want something very dry and almost sterile in delivery? Or something with a lik warmth? I can say the ifi I have is very nice to listen to because it’s not super bright , which some people confuse with being more “clear”. It’s not muddy, muddy means it distorts the song and you can’t hear details. I can hear anything I have ever heard in any song on this little dac/amp. But brighter amps will highlight the high end and it will shoot into your ear more noticeably, also not so great for the ears . The ifi stuff also has bass boost and 3D features along with firmware changes to go along with the legendary brown chip they use in their dac. In the recording world that chip is really special because warmth is something that is prized in music production , and more so now when everyone is making songs on laptops and computer software that makes songs sound thinner and flatter than before . I wouldn’t waste money on the drip version , try out the regular versions on amazon , return for free, free shipping and see what it sounds like. For casual listening I’m not sure why anyone wants something super sterile. The whole idea of “this is what the studio wants you to hear “ is a bit overblown. They make songs sound somewhat safe so it translates to lots of different sound systems well. So they don’t hype bass too much for example. But they know itl sound boss when the song is played on a system with heavy bass. If they recorded and mixed a song with fat bass from the beginning, it will easily be overhyped in cars or clubs etc. so studio recordings are kinda lean sounding, on purpose, because they can come to life a bit more in consumer gear. You’ll never hear it how they do, unless ur in that room with their speakers and acoustics . So long story short, some people may say brighter or thinner sounding amps are better. That’s not true. From what Iv heard, the songs I hear still sound very accurate and correct on ifi stuff, and with a nice cozy warmth that makes you wanna listen for hours . It’s really nice in my opinion. Aslong as your gear doesn’t somehow cover up parts of the song idk how anyone can complain . It’s up to whether or not you want something bright or warmer/fatter. Fatter tones with more “body” are the most sought out in audio productions. No one really goes “hey I want this to sound super dry and lack fat tone”

I have the 6xx, Sundara & couple of IEMs. Would this be suited to the 6xx as well as Sundara and my IEMs or would the SMSL stack a better option? I can get both stack at similar price and bluetooth option from the SMSL is a nice feature but not that important but the screen is nice tho.

@@SM-1234late response, but I own the ifi Zen V2 dac. I also own the Zmf Auteur which is a 300 ohm 97 dB rated headphone. The ifi Zen is adequate and runs it at high enough volumes without maxing the volume knob, albeit running through the 4.4mm balanced output. Getting a dedicated Amp would most likely yield a more refined sound, but I wouldn't consider it absolutely necessary

Hart Audio cables in the US is superb. You buy one or more amp end short cables, XLR, 4.4mm etc to a mini XLR, then you get one or more headphone 4ft cables mini XLR to whatever your headphones need. As always with US shipping, outside postage costs are a bit high compared to others. I have a set of amp end adapters, and a 3.5mm balanced cable for my Sundaras. Means I can switch easily from my headphone amp to my Fiio M11. Plus they will do most any colour you like, if available.

As cool as the Loki is, it won't give you the precision of something like a PMEQ or the Zen Signature (Obviously only for 6XX). I don't think the two are mutually exclusive, although the cost obviously does add up.

Joshua, thanks for the effort on the review I think the new style is good overall and doesn't detract from what you do. You're generally being treated unfairly in the comments by people who've likely never used or heard the product. You discussed fairly what it does and why it might not be a great value. At no point did you say its actually better sound than many other amp, just that at $250 and for the 6XX specifically it does complement very well. Whether people decide spending more on an amp specific to a headphone that costs less than the amp itself is on them. For 6XX fanatics especially those who already own a separate DAC I think its a fine buy, for others, maybe not so much.

Yes, the 650 and 6XX. Also works with 600 though.

Im actually really interested in this stack. The 6XX was my first real step into the Audiophile realm and while I have purchased a couple other headphones over the last few years, the 6XX is still a beloved daily driver. Im still listening to it on an old ODAC/O2 Amp. I think this would be a nice upgrade. And if its anything like the Hip-Dac, I think our Sundara and Ananda would sound really good on this stack too. I know that it can be difficult to find 4.4mm cables, but they are out there. Dekoni makes s 4.4mm cable for the 6XX. But its around $100. I could get what would likely be a higher quality custom made cable from various places. Audiophile Ninja on Etsy made me some awesome custom cables. I think he has 4.4mm termination as an option too.

Oh also, several sites, like Amazon and Audio46 are selling the signature bundle that includes the otherwise expensive 4.4mm to 4.4mm cable as well!

Rather get the Zen Dac V2 with the Zen Can. Way cheaper and better value for money.

@@cricket4life249 I have both and no it is not. If you get the bundle from Amazon, the Signature stack is great value for money and sounds better.

I currently use the iFI idsd black label with my HD6xx and its a stunning combo! would recommend. I have it on normal power and it gets painfully loud

Interesting. Still need to hear your thoughts on the HeddPhone. I am almost pulling the trigger on it over the Arya. Come and stop me Josh. Will drive with the RME ADI-2 DAC

I posted this in the pinned comment, but I wanted to reply directly. "Hmmmm. - J "
