iFi ZEN CAN Review

Ғылым және технология

iFi ZEN CAN Review. After previously reviewing the iFi Audio Zen DAC a super affordable and great sounding DAC and Amp combo. I called it THE benchmark DAC for its price point. The IFI Zen CAN headphone amplifier builds on this and provides more power for those hungry headphones.

Excellent review, I concur as well as zen Can owner. I feed the topping E30 dac into it. I notice on my DT770 250 ohms that I put the gain to +12db, and turn down the volume to about 9 o'clock. It brings out the mids, puts them more forward, and adds more dynamic range, making them much more exciting. If I want "easy listening" while working I switch it back to 0db gain.

Great review Noel. It’s worth noting that the ifi power supplies are surprisingly low noise for “wall wart” switching power supplies. They sell for $50 separately. There’s a few tests online comparing the iPower versus high end linear power supplies. Also, the ifi Nano BL Dac/amp that I have has balanced output via its 3.5 mm output (ifi always seems to have some nice hidden features). It’s an unusual standard but I bought a 3.5 mm to 2.5 mm balanced adapter. Works like a charm.

I purchased the Zen Can - Zen Dac stack, based on these reviews. Bought it for my Sennheiser HD 6xx and Hifimann 4xx and after listening and comparing to my Schitt stack, I found that I really enjoyed the sound much more on the Zen Stack, and returned the Schitt stack. The Zen stack had a much smoother sound and the bass button on the Can does add that extra kick to the bass that makes it sound really nice. Thank you.

Thank you very much for the video and the effort you put into each video, I follow you for your analysis and opinions both without any commitment. One question, these days my 6xxs are coming to me and they are my first entry into this world of hifi, a friend recommended me the ifi zen dac + can (because for him, the more power is better for the 6xx), but seeing Your review, I do not think that buying it for 210 $ (in my country) will obtain significant changes, Do you think that with zen dac I will be satisfied introducing myself in this world? Or maybe I can see better amp, pre amp, tube options in this case like the little dot mk2 (aliexpress for $ 170) and add it to my ifi zen dac ?, I am afraid that acquiring this tube amp will not really obtain a significant change when it comes to improving my 6xx, I hope your opinion, or another user who can help me. P.S. It would be great if you could teach how to EQ the 6xx, for newbies like me.

Maybe that was the reason why 880 600 ohm performed better on zen can . Also would like to know your thoughts on how Zen dac and zen can did with k712 pro.

I bought the Sennheiser HD 660s today and I was wondering what kind of AMP/DAC should I buy. The site where I will be buying it from, states that the ZEN CAN can output 300 Ω. The headphones require 150 Ω.( maybe someone who knows better, can explain what should I know about the Ω requirements) I am worried that the Zen Can will not power the headphones properly. Currently using a 35$ Logilink amp. that does that have enough power but has optical to connect it to my PC. The ZEN CAN does not have Optical IN. How does one person connect this to their PC ? besides 3.5 jack Thank you !

Do you think that connecting the Zen CAN to the "ZEN DAC AIR" would improve this AIR version of the ZEN DAC? The Zen DAC AIR has, like the Zen CAN, the XBass+ function but also a function called Power Match. I don't know if this Power Match function is basically the same as the GAIN function on the Zen Can. I also don't know if the 3D function of the Zen CAN offers a better result than the Xspace function of the AIR version of the Zen Can. Did the iFi Zen Can amplifier you analyze in this video include the wall-mounted power adapter and RCA cables in the box?

Excellent review! As an aside, if you want your Zen DAC sound to it's full potential, spend the $200+ for iFi's Mercury 3.0 USB Cable. I was hesitant to do it, but the difference relative to the USB Cable provided with the unit is Huge, even through my sub-$100 headphones. That said, my experience with the two units connected with a 4.4 Balanced cable is near identical to what Wheezy experienced. Sparks in Daytona

Hello. Have you noticed that the Zen Can heats up a little anyway, sometimes more, sometimes less, sometimes not at all? The Can is not very hot either, nothing abnormal in my opinion. I wondered if this heat could be caused by the power adapter that came with the Zen Can. The adapter included in the packaging box of my Zen Can (compared to the adapter you show in your video) is very small and also does not display the iFi Audio name anywhere on it. The adapter I have is anyway 5v (as it should be). Is the iFi name on your own adapter? I suddenly suspected the clerk at the store I bought the Zen Can it from had changed perhaps the adapter and then recreated the plastic cellophane packing around the cardboard box to make sure it looked like it was new never been opened (the RCA cables are not purple like yours, either but at least they have the iFi brand written on them). Perhaps the difference between your accessories and mine can be explained by the fact that Zen Can accessories vary from one continent to another (?). In my case North America. You are right about the bass, the Zen CAN's xBass is much more discreet than that of the Zen DAC (even if the xBass of the Zen DACis already subtle). You can also activate xBass on the CAN and the DAC at the same time. In some video playbacks, activating xBass or not is more positive. In the case of the 3D function, I noticed while listening to a Wimbledon tennis match yesterday on KZread that it improved, but only very subtly, the sound sensation of the places (for example with the ambient sound of applause). But it's really minimally. My first seconds of listening to the Zen CAN (connected to the Zen DAC by RCA) left me quite perplexed and a little discouraged, I did not see the fundamental gain: the power was sufficient with the DAC alone, the bass of the DAC was higher than that of the CAN, and the 3D of the CAN had an imperceptible result: in short, I mainly saw the 175 pounds that I had perhaps spent for nothing! But by comparing and connecting the DAC alone, then the CAN connected to the DAC, and several other times alternately, I ended up seeing that for example the gain of the CAN (the three degrees of gain in front of the Zen Can) was audible and also that increasing the volume of the DAC quite a bit on its own (without the CAN connected) offered a less fleshed out sound, what I think you call a more compressed sound. But this difference in quality at high volume is not a revolution. I also noticed that the xBass function of the CAN, more discreet, was often ideal for just a little neutralizing the dryness of certain recordings. That said, the Zen DAC on its own does an excellent job in headphone mode. Basically, I notice that the ear gets used to and can even become dependent on the sound of the DAC or CAN. I would like to point out that my Zen DAC is the lighter version, that is to say the Zen DAC AIR. Conversely, my Zen CAN is the most expensive full version (not the AIR). I use the CAN and the DAC exclusively in headphone mode (I have not connected anything behind the CAN). My headphones are a 48 ohm Beyerdynamic DT 900 ProX (open-back headphones).

The Fiio K3 does the same thing as the Zen Dac for less money. I'm not saying it sounds better, but its power is provided by USBc so it can draw higher amperage than the ZENdac. It also has bass boost, three gain levels, a switch for USB 1 and USB 2 audio, coax, optical and line out, balanced and unbalanced headphone out. And it has a volume knob that physically turns off the dac when you want it to draw no power... In a quarter of the space of a Zen product, making it even better for mobile applications. Despite the greatness of the Fiio K3, it's too light for a headphone cable to be hanging off it it on the desktop, so I bought a Zen Dac for my desktop and balanced headphones. MAYbe a Zen Can to follow.

I wanted to get Zen Dac, for HD6xx that I'm waiting for, but I really need an option of line-in to connect to vinyl/CD player either directly or via an AV receiver (probably AVR-X2700H as Sony STR-DN1080 is out of stock everywhere). I started looking at FiiO K5 pro, topping offerings etc. Reading all the reviews, opinions, comparisons- it honestly makes my head spin and I'm still none the wiser about what should I choose. I would prefer an integrated DAC/AMP but now I'm thinking maybe I should get that DEC CAN and later on some kind of cheap Dac like Cyrus soundKey that WhatHiFi seems to like a lot or some other model that I could hide out of the view so it doesn't look ugly next to Zen... Yeah, I would lie if I said that the way ZEN CAN looks is not affecting my decisions. Oh- I should also add that the best sound quality I ever had a chance to hear is listening to songs on KZread using my wife's Sony Wh-100xm3. I'd love to experience better quality music-hence my buying of HD6xx, but I have no idea what I like or what most of these audiophile terms even mean. Anyone would care to comment with some advice?

Don't bother with the cheap small DACs. Especially if you want to connect to a receiver or a vinyl player. Zen Dac has RCA out which might make connecting speakers easier. I'd say start with the Zen Dac or K5 Pro. I have the Zen Stack with the 6XX and R70X headphones but never really felt I needed the Zen Can. Not too much a difference in sound quality aside from the Zen Can having much more volume available if I needed to go louder. Which I didn't because the Dac had enough volume for everything I used it for. You should test the K5 Pro and Zen Dac to see how you like them paired with the 6XX. Having a ZEN DAC/Amp combo (no power suply, just USB connected) and unbalanced headphones with no more than 300 Ohms, do you think it would be a significant upgrade in sound quality buying the ZEN CAN? @@odin1983 Deeper bass, even more full bodied and even smoother mids . It pairs incredibly well with 6xx/650. 6XX mode is exactly what anyone had a complaint about the 650 before but fixed, so it adds a bit of treble so there is no “veil” and adds rumble to the sub bass. Any genre of music I put on so far has been superb. The vocals are buttery smooth, the soundstage is open like a pair of speakers which usually isn’t the case with 650 unless amped correctly, meaning class A, R2R or tubes. The stack really upgraded the sound of the 650 and I wouldn’t put a price of 325€ on them anymore, they perform well above the price point if you got them amped like this. Both 650 and Sundara sounded much better with the signature stack, regular dac was really nice regardless, but the signature stack really pushes both of these headphones to the max in terms of soundstage, bass, mids, highs.

It's sheer madness(and nothing else) to get a high impedance headphone, stack it to amps and dacs one over the other and get lost in ever confusing wires. Where is the music then. It's better to get a decent low impedance headphone, plug directly into mobile(or use a simple amp if interested) and get lost in to your music. Any contrary view is most welcome

You are mostly right, though you’d have to define “decent”. Really decent headphones still benefit from an amp, even when entirely capable of being driven by a phone. You yourself suggest to use a simple amp, so the only extra item would be a dac. And these wires connect to each other: in the end only one cable connect to your headphones. Also, one can get a good dac/amp combo.
