The Untold Truth Of The High Table In John Wick

Ойын-сауық

As the John Wick series has gone on, we have learned more about the criminal underworld that the title character is a part of. There is quite a hierarchy to all of the villainy in the series, and everyone has to submit to the High Table, an organization where the leaders of the 12 most powerful crime syndicates make decisions for everyone else. Of course, this leads to plenty of issues, especially if criminals don’t feel like submitting to the authority of other criminals. Let’s take a look at the untold truth of the High Table in the John Wick films.

I like how these assassins treat each other as friends or co-workers even though there's a chance they might need to kill each other because of their job, but one thing that they must always remember is that death is nothing personal. There are 2 kinds of assassins under the high table, those who kill because it's their job and those who kill because they want to earn their freedom so they can stop killing.

What I don't get is that everyone knows Wick as a deadly instrument, but don't somehow piece together that it's not (at least I don't think it is) in his nature to seek out the killing of Gianna unless someone points him in her direction. He even tells Cassian that it was her brother who sent him and he still goes after Wick. Sure, Cassian and Gianna seemed to have a relationship of some sort, but it's still unreasonable to skip over the fact that Wick isn't a decision maker and wouldn't kill a member of the High Table without provocation.

Would be interesting if the High Table is actually occupied by the Knights Templars who survived the massacre. The organization was already wealthy, well trained in combat/military matters, had ties to the Church, and had connections around most of the Middle East and Europe. The spread of Christianity to Africa and Asia would only allow them to expand, and tbe rest of the world therein. Additionally, they founded the banking foundations still used today, so it wouldn't be far fetched for them to be able to start a Continental-likr infrastructure as a means of safe harbor and currency transference.

Technically D’Atntonio didn’t kill her and he also played it off as if it was John Wicks own goal. The other reason being that D’Antonio wasn’t a target due to a marker, John killed him because he was forced to kill some his sister. This was all planned so that wick can take the blame for everything. D’Antonio even made sure to be in the continental for when John would kill him so that John could be excommunicated. He even instigated John to kill him when he was shot, knowing full well that John would kill him regardless

It would not surprise me to learn that the network was the off-shoot of the first crusaders when they met the Hashashine who were the first group of assassins and with the power and money backing the crusades... formed an alliance to keep the peace as best as they can through archaic and ultimately analog means. The Knights Templar invented rudamentary forms of banking given they had to keep track of so much of it... and when they became too powerful through monetary means... were ultimately declared heretics by the church. So with their down-fall they fled to the darkness with their money and their assassins. That is where the Elder, one designated, born into or chosen by all the groups comes in.. they are the balance. They keep the rest in check and are exiled to the desert as both a safety mechanism and a penance for having such power. Because the only reason they would uphold such a thing, in such a situation is because they believe in the organization and it's ethics and not for some modern comforts.

Viggo gave John Wick the "impossible task" which layed the foundation for his empire.. what we find out is John Wick sought out help from Santino D'Antonio with the "impossible task" and John Wick gave him a marker. Which he used when he didn't get his seat at the Table when his father died.. It's also mentioned that Santino, probably gave his word or agreed that he wouldn't use the marker as long as John Wick stayed retired.. But since the events of JW1, leads him back into the world he left. ( even Winston comments about how he go out once and if John even dips a pinky back into the pond something might reach out and drag him back in ) Santino uses that to make John Wick honor the marker. One can assume once you are in with a "family" like Viggo's or the D'Antonio's you are in for LIFE. But since John Wick was able to complete the impossible task, Viggo honored John Wick's request.

Crime organiziations are often referred to as "families" - they even often refer to themselves as such. It's not necessarily a mark of relationship, but more one of trust and loyalty. A crime family is not necessarily a real family. They emulate such basic human relationships because of two reasons: 1) Crime is a lonely job. You don't go home as a crimeboss or a John Wick-level assassin and have a normal life and a normal family. High-profile crime is not a dayjob. 2) It infers loyalty. The high table is not run by families - it's run by crime families. Some of these people may actually be related, but this is not the Habsburgs.

One thing I never liked about the whole plot is that the table has the resources to meticulously identify every single person who helped John, most of them due to also owing him favors via that blood pledge thingy, yet aren't able to ascertain WHY John is in the position he's in to begin with, i.e. he was ordered to kill a member of one of the seat holders. Don't they have any regulations against that? even from people pledged to do so by their blood pact? Aside from the the Elder I can't imagine a position higher than having a seat on the table. I understand that this would make it so that the events of the films don't really need to happen and that a lot of it is also tied to John executing Santino on hotel grounds, but there seems to be nothing in the high table regulations for exemptions on when one of their own is murdered through a blood pact, which makes their entire social rule system pretty bonkers to begin with IMO because i don't think it was ever specified to what degree John is being pursued in the third film due to killing on sacred grounds or killing a member of the high table; i know its both but it would help to know which one carries higher priority because then the previous point I made about Santino ordering the execution of his sister would carry proportionate weight and possibly be able to offset the rule about killing on sacred grounds?

@@shadowmystery5613 Very good point! If there is anybody capable of over-ruling the social rules, it should probably be a member of the high table and/or The Elder. This is IMHO a huge plot hole in a movie which has made it a point to emphasize that the gold coins they use in their social order represent symbolism more so than currency. Hence, if their order puts more emphasis on social symbolism than currency, using a social blood pact to order a member of the high table or the ability to override such an order via a high table member should carry even more importance because the absence of such a failsafe would make the entire structure extraordinarily fragile and prone to instant collapse!

@@Steenkin Ye, it would've done the table actually good if Gianna would've taken the seat and got rid of her brother. Because when I compare the two from the few moments I saw Gianna I think she's a woman that's responsible and who's willing to do necessary stuff without going overboard where as her brother is just a psychopath threatening the entire table with his greed for power.

My impression of the blood markers (through Santino's "impossible" task of having his own sister, seated at the high table, killed and through John and Sophia's dialogue) is that no matter how outlandish the favor asked is, you are indebted, and if refused, the person that you gave the blood marker to has the right to kill you, which is why they made the markers seem like very weighted and rare things to have with someone else. My guess is that some of the people in this underground world have some pretty rule-breaking favors needed, so while the High Table doesnt excuse them, the person requesting the blood favor might ask for something outside the rules. Santino's actions raised a lot of questions for me as well, because as soon as John completes his favor and Santino stamps his blood everything should be even, but he breaks this by pretending it wasnt him who ordered the hit on Gianna and puts a bounty on Wicks head. Many "legal" questions there but to me it seemed the main reason that the High Table was coming for John vs. Santino was that he did a very good job of covering up the motives behind the hit and since Wick killed him, emphasized by the fact that it was on Continental grounds, Wick would be the person of focus for any wrongdoing. The whole John Wick universe is fascinating but yeah there are some major plot points that could be developed in more detail.

  • @Whatsdogpee

I think they dont care that John killed the lady. It’s just that one of the members of the high elite (the brother) wanted him dead. So being part owner of the table, the brother set his goons on John. The problem I think was when he broke Continental rules. Recall in the first movie, when the lady killed in the Continental, she was hunted down by the higher ups. If John killed off grounds, like he did with the sister, the next person in line would take over. He or she could be like, “nah John, u good” then no bounty on his head. No contract. No reason to kill John. Life goes on as normal. But instead, he kills on Continental grounds which is the grievous sin. The fact that it was a Table member, well that probably got the other table members antsy and wanted John gone because there’s nothing stopping this guy. Which would also explain why the Elder was all super chill in John’s presence. He was like, yeah i can reverse the bounty and give you sanctuary again. No biggie. Because the issues that were plaguing John were those things, not the fact that the high table member was dead.
