I don’t know why, but the fact that the Nomadic and Traffic are called the “Little Sisters” of the Olympic class just makes me so happy. It’s so fitting, I suppose. The Titanic Museum is certainly on my bucket list of places I want to visit. It’s so cool that the Nomadic is part of that experience.

Any ship that produces perfectly diamond-shaped smoke deserves to be preserved!

I think the best example I can give as to how I feel about Nomadic is HMS Victory, in Portsmouth, England: she's still in service, still the flagship of the Royal Navy, even though she's been sat in drydock for 101 years now...but that last part doesn't matter, she is the flagship and every single ship that passes through the harbour salutes her, every time they arrive and depart. So for me, as long as Nomadic is around, although she isn't actually in the water, the White Star Line - and the Olympic Class - are very much alive.

What's even more poetic is the fact that one time Nomadic had her paint redone a few years ago and the very people who did it were the workers of Harland & Wolff. Beautiful

Being from Belfast, in 2018 me and my girlfriend got tickets for a special opportunity to join a paranormal group and do a over night stay on the Nomadic. We both love the paranormal and Titanic history, so we couldn't ignore the opportunity. According to local residents the Nomadic is haunted and at night people hear crew men working on board, whistles blowing and lights being turned on from within the ship etc. It was brilliant but we started at 9pm and stayed on board until 6am, I would be lying if I said we seen something. However what we all experienced was something I will never forget, there was about 20 people in the group and we all gathered below deck at the stern. We all sat in complete darkness and it was so dark I literally couldn't see my girlfriend beside me nor could she see me. The leader of the group began talking about the crew and the some of the passengers who were on board like Molly Brown, suddenly the entire Nomadic began gently vibrating and shaking as if the engines had be turned on, I shouted out can anyone feel that shaking? People shouted yes as everyone could feel it moving through our bodies. It continued for a couple of minutes as if going into gear and then stopped, we were later told that the Nomadic literally has no engine in her and it has been reported that it does happen. We all felt it and I'll never forget it.

@@randomrazr I don't believe so but from my research it was used for fetch and carry soldiers, during the world war 2. A lot of soldiers did have horrible injuries being shipped home from France to Britain and Ireland.

I had the pleasure of being on the SS nomadic last week in Belfast. It's like stepping into a time machine. It's well worth a visit for anyone with an interest in Titanic

​@@beedalton9675 it has the smell of an old boat. No notable smell of anything in particular.. The inside itself is fairly bare bones and nothing overly "grand" the real feel of grandeur comes with you go into the public restroom onboard which is a restored 1st class restroom, there in particular you get that 1st class Vibe from.

I visited the Titanic museum and the Nomadic earlier this year for my 30th. We also stayed at the titanic hotel - former H&W drawing offices, I can honestly say it is absolutely worth a visit. They have worked exceptionally hard to bring her back to life and it shows!

I can't believe I never heard of this! I live in the UK and really want to go and see this ship!! It's so cute how Thomas Andrews made them look like baby Olympics

Been on Nomadic last year and trust me, standing on the wooden decks looking down the vessel.. takes you straight to that 1900’s era and to Titanic. IMO that’s better than the actual Belfast Museum lol.

WOW!! The SS Nomadic has led quite an adventurous life. I'm so glad that she's been preserved, and serves as the ambassador of the entire White Star Line.

When I lived in Paris around 2000, I had the chance to see the Nomadic several times. I already was a Titanic enthusiast at the time, but had I known the history of this ship, I would have taken so many pictures. I feel sad afterwards.

I try my best to get the pronunciation right. Believe it or not I ran Lee Harvey through google translate and the way I said it in the video is the way it said I say it.

"Lay Haaave" is near enough. The "re" of Le Havre are silent in pronunciation. Good video non the less.

She's a beautiful ship! When I was living in Ireland, me and my family took a road trip to Belfast to visit the Titanic museum. We booked a hotel room which had a great view of the Samson and Goliath cranes, and at night you could see them in the distance with their lights on. The museum experience was amazing! When we got on the nomadic it was empty, so we got the ship all to ourselves lol. It was very good looking, they did a great job restoring it. If I remember right, they did take out the engines, which is kind of a shame since it would've been cool to see them. I would love to go back one day!

As someone who was part of the Save the Nomadic campaign and the group the Nomadic Preservation Society, the story you give is well done. However, there is still much that was NOT pretty behind the scenes. Furthermore, the ship is not yet fully restored. And finally, the ship is currently up on blocks. This is not a great move. There is a story as to why she is not floating and if you ask any good maritime surveyor or architect, she needs to be floating. And why it is wonderful that she is about 90% restored, at this present time in the grand scheme of the entire complex, she is an afterthought. Thank you for a well put together presentation.

Thank you so much for helping save this important piece of maritime history. I hope the Nomadic gets fully restored soon! Wouldn't it be great if we could get her floating and maybe restore her steam engines. (or at least make replicas) so people could sail on her as a functional museum ship! That would be amazing!

I visited the SS Nomadic back in 2018 and to the Titanic museum in both in Belfast. Was an amazing experience and definitely recommend visiting!

Before Nomadic and Traffic, there was another White Star Line tender at Cherbourg called the Gallic and she served from 1907 mostly for Adriatic, Oceanic, Majestic and Teutonic, the four of which were running the Southampton-Cherbourg-New York service at the time.

Was on board Nomadic today. Been a Titanic geek my whole life and then moved onto just maritime history as a whole, being in the Titanic quarter was a fantastic experience for me. I’d highly recommend it all.

I think the reason why both ships were not used is possible mechanical. Those ships were in use for a good amount of time by the time WW2 started, it is likely that the one left behind might have had some issues and they needed to use the more reliable of the 2

Thank goodness the Nomadic was saved. I always get emotional when I hear that a ship has gone to the scrappers.

I sailed out of Cherbourg many years ago on a large ferry heading for the port of Southampton. Cherbourg is a pretty big port even back in the early 1980's.

I love the Nomadic. What a incredible little ship. After everything shes been through she ended up outliving every other WSL ship and is still intact today and well cared for

I am so incredibly excited to go see the SS Nomadic and the titanic museum soon (I am going on vacation to Ireland) As a kid I fell in love with all the stories and mystery. I can’t wait!

Back in 2008 or so, I taped a special documentary, on the subject of restoring the Nomadic. The were saying then, that unless they were able, to raise the complete funding for the restoration, it was STILL in danger, of being scrapped. Since then, I lost track of it. I'm glad to hear that they're efforts, were fruitful. I was pondering what, the outcome was, years back.

It has become a yearly tradition to go up and see the Nomadic, despite seeing it many times. It still takes my breath away.

It's strange how fate works and the Normadic survived yet the Traffic came through so much yet just didn't. It's the trousers of time, and kind of sad. I feel that. I missed the Normadic when I was in Paris. I used to go every January (cheap Eurostar!) and discovered one year the Princess Elizabeth, one of the ex Isle of Wight paddle steamers was on the Seine. At that point I had no idea that the Nomadic even existed. I almost certainly passed her but would have been quite oblivious to her true identity, or even given her more than a passing glance. Something I regret. Per building ships quickly, I believe the Caledonian Steam Packet Co. had their PS Duchess of Fife built around 1902 in 6 months. There's a full photographic record in book form. I lent that to a friend in 1989 and haven't seen it since. Or him.

I LOVE Nomadic. I’ve been on her a few times now. It was so special to connect to her big sisters. Although be careful when you’re on her. I wasn’t expecting the deck to be cambered and tripped. I came very close to falling over the railing and into the dock she’s in!

In Cobh Co. Cork, (formerly known as Queestown), the building that housed the White Star Line ticket office is still standing. It's a restaurant now - Titanic themed, of course. Just outside, and within sight of the restaurant are the remains of the original pier that tender boats would have collected passengers from. Cobh is steeped in maritime history, it's where Lusitania survivors and it's dead were brought ashore. There is a Lusitania graveyard. I believe James Cameron scouted Cobh prior to filming 'Titanic', and I've heard that there is even unused footage of a short Queensrown based storyline that ultimately never made the final cut. Also, in Cork city there is a great pub called the Long Valley, it had furniture from another White Star Line vessel called 'Celtic' that ran aground off Cork in 1928.

As I only live about a 3 hour drive from Belfast I was able to the Titanic museum last year and I agree with other comments below that the Nomadic was the highlight. The restored Linoleum flooring, the White Star livery and all the other fixtures makes you feel like you are in a real "Honour and Glory" experience, without the flooding. I know it is a long distance but you should visit it sometime Sam.

Visiting the Titanic Museum was on my bucket list, and allthough the Museum itself is of world class format, the most impressing and unforgettable experience for me was walking on the ship that "kissed" the Titanic and had so many famous passengers. To me it was a great honor to be there! What i didn't know however was, that it wasn't my first time i saw her. In 1998 i visited Paris and went also to the Eifel Tower, so it is very likely i saw her already as a kid without knowing how special that old restaurant boat was. I just noticed by the picture you showed of her in Paris.

It's possible a Holland America tender the "Columbus" still exists. It was in service in Amsterdam as recently as 1995 as a pleasure craft. This tender was built around the same time as Nomadic and originally transported passengers to the SS Rotterdam. If anyone has any information on the whereabouts of this historic ship this would be very helpful.

Such a great ship, went on her and it looked stunning. The boiler room is also partially restored and u can go and see everything

So the SS Nomadic was at one point a floating restaurant selling sushi next to the Eiffel tower. A British ship, in Paris, selling Japanese cuisine; that would have been an interesting experience.

I'm from Belfast myself and have been on the Nomadic several times and even worked on it at one point. What a wonderful experience and would most definitely recommend it to anyone wanting to visit.

If only the Olympic was spared from the junkyard too. Now that would have been an awesome museum piece.

Cant believe after all its history and importance, it was even talked about as a possible scrap possibility. Deserved to be preserved as the last white star vessal in service till 1968.

Great video, Sam. Very interesting and well done, as are all your videos. I've only seen one other video about the Nomadic that featured a virtual tour of the vessel. They really went all out in her restoration to the point claiming that touring the Nomadic was the closest thing to touring the Titanic. This was due to her having been built to cater to first class passengers, hence her interiors where designed to emulate and compliment those of the Olympic class which she, in fact did very well. Just an FYI. Again, Sam, thanks for another fine video!

Quite wonderful. I am extremely glad that the Nomadic and Traffic survived all those years. Especially the Nomadic. I suppose Olympic payed her a visit every once in a while, quite nice to see an old ship like her still serving newer and newer ships of the time, them getting larger and larger! Being on the Traffic and Nomadic must've been quite the luxury too, being on a mini Olympic Class liner!

Great job Sam, the two tenders would of been vital in Cherbourg during those years and I am extremely pleased that the RMS Nomadic is still about today.

I saw the Nomadic when it was moored on The Seine, across from the Eiffel Tower during the mid 90s. It was promoted as being the Titanic’s tender but it was in a sorry state. Much of the superstructure had already been removed and, I’m pretty certain, it was no longer operating as a restaurant. I was delighted when it went back to Belfast. Le Havre is pronounced Le Harve, by the way. There’s an almost imperceptible ‘r’ after the ‘v’ but it’s better to just ignore it. The French language has many, many letters that are silent.

I’m so thankful that the Nomadic is still around! Looks like I need to see about making a trip to Belfast sometime soon!

you did an amazing job! i can't even imagine how it is difficult to reconstruct the history of such small vessels. I remeber seeing the nomadic when i was little more than a child when i was in Paris. At that time i think it no longer was a floating restaurant but i remember clearly seeing a sign that said "this is is Titanic remorqueur". It is truly a miracle this ship survived all the way to us. Would be great seeing a video similar to this one about the Acquitania and his long carreer :)

Thats a great video of Nomadic loading onto Olympic. Id never seen the baggage before, it looks remarkably like a modern baggage loader at an airport!

I live in Plymouth England, grew up in Newcastle north east England and so many ships still sail between the port of shields, the Lusitania was built on the Tyne I think? But Cherbourg to Plymouth is such an important part of merchant naval trading or it was until Brexit, now our food often comes from South America, mexico, Israel and South Africa. Cherbourg will not miss the trade as it trades all over Europe sadly brits believe we are the biggest trade for Europe and eur would miss our trade, unfortunately we missed out and now have the only G7 country that has a failing economy.

I saw the Nomadic as a teenager in Paris and just after she was requisitioned (she was in a dire state) and she looked magnificently elegant. moreover : Great explanation. However : how can you not say Compagnie Cherbourgoise de Transbordement? you can say Compagnie (same as company just for a longer "i" in the end) you say Cherbourg quite a few times so adding 'Oise' to it (like Waz in Wazzup but with an e in the end pronounced like a very short 'Uhm') Transborder is a word you should know adding "ment" to it (pronounced 'mon' even though the 'n' is weirdly spoken for English speakers as the 't' is silent) : All I want is a proper cup of coffee from a proper copper coffee pot, but since I cannot get a proper cup of coffee from a proper copper coffee pot I'll have a cup of tea!

Finally! A ship that is not noticable in maritime history!

I visted Belfast last year and went onto the Nomadic it was amazing to be on such a amazing piece of history

The RMS Queen Elizabeth was also retired in 1968. she was moved to Port Everglades.And it was opened in 1969. The tourist attraction was unsuccessful and they closed the tourist attraction in 1970.

For me visiting the nomadic in Belfast was a magical experience especially after walking around the surrounding areas. Didn't think much of the museum if I'm being honest. The museum is still worth a visit but I wouldn't go back to see it. I'd definitely go back and visit the area and nomadic again. The titanic hotel it's self is like a museum. We stayed there taking in the surroundings then a short walk downstairs you end up in Thomas Andrews office 😊
