10 Minutes in, and cannot stop watching! Great guest and of course a fascinating rider in Frank Vandenbroucke. Hope the sport continues to learn some lessons in how to safeguard the elite riders.

Thank you for such a balanced and well represented telling of the story. I have never been a competitive cyclist, it has always been an escape from the day for me, the problems some have when that escape becomes their "normal" is something we need to understand better so we can help those who need support. This podcast greatly helps that/my understaning. Thank you.

I try my luck in cycling between 1995 and 2002 but when I find out that other's in the peloton was using drug's enhancing performance ,I stop with competition because I was not going to damage my body just to win. At the same time I understand why someone els will use this drugs because a human body cannot do any of this preformance without it,that is just not possible.

It's a really good and terribly sad book. It didn't really end well for the greats of that generation, did it? Vandenbrouke, Pantani, Ullrich - even Armstrong and Cipollini. Varying degrees of sympathy perhaps, but a waste

Thanks for this! I used to work in Dakar where he died - and I raced in Guinea Bissau and the Congo. Only white guy in the peloton Lolz.

Sounds to me he was introduced to doping, then became a doper with a conscience. His self doubt via his guilt overcame him before every race, but his ability and performance in races overcame the guilt. Then the guilt came back again after every race. With his conscience, he was just unable to deal with the continual ups and downs in his mental outlook. Sad, but totally understandable in hindsight.

@@andymcgrath327I loved the book too 👍🏻👍🏻 I’m a fan of FVDB for many years but there is very little published or video info about him in English.
