The UNSOLVED Disappearance of the Man Who Invented Diesel
Douglas Brunt, author of The Mysterious Case of Rudolf Diesel: Genius, Power, and Deception on the Eve of World War I, joins us to discuss the titular subject of his newest book, an often overlooked but seminal figure in American history who changed the course of history with his invention of the Diesel engine, and who disappeared mysteriously without a trace.

Rudolph Diesel is what I call "anonymously famous". Everyone knows his name, but almost nobody knows about the man.
As a shade tree mechanic this is fascinating. Subs, tractors, semi trucks , buses none of these would have been as efficient. Pinkertons were horrible mercenaries. We still have anti-Pinkerton laws on the books. Too bad they aren’t enforced.
Klavan, you're so underrated it's criminal.
The fact Klavan didn’t know something doesn’t seem real. In fact, learning Andrew didn’t know something is more traumatic to me than Jan 6th, officially.

I am in line to borrow the kindle copy from my library. I borrowed another of Brunt's books in the mean time.
He helped me win a trivia contest. Thank you for bringing him to light.
I like reading books. When something I read inspires an idea, I like to pause and take the mental trip and then return to where I was with the story. This happens with audio books, but by the time I am done with my thought, I have to back up the audio book and find my place.
Brunt is tremendously appealing. I hope this becomes more dominant and returns to our society.
Just added to my books to buy list on amazon haha. This is right up my alley!
Regarding Kindle, as we get older one of the major advantages of Kindle is that you can resize the print and change the typeface of most, but unfortunately not all books, and with the Kindle Paperwhite, a backlight is included and you can even change it to make it warmer colored and therefore easier on the eyes at night. The 🤬 Durham report does not resize. It remains infinitesimally small print, and of a thin lined font that is harder to read than 10 CFR. It's as if they don't want people to read it.
Ahh, takes me back to thermodynamics lectures at University.
Watched on DW. Great interview. Love history. Look forward to reading this.
I’m glad to hear that Klavan doesn’t understand a lot about WW I. I’ve tried and I can’t figure it all out either. It’s probably always going to be a mystery to me.

It is not complicated. Germanic, French and British culture had been competing for dominance for centuries.

Have you read Proud Tower?
I cannot imagine any other engine lasting as long as a Diesel. The Diesel engine is amazing! The very first Diesel engine still works, and it runs like new at 110 years old. Wow!
I would watch a DW+ history docuseries by Andrew Klavan.
Great interview, thanks Mr. Klavan!
Can't wait to read this. Big fan of Noel B. Gerson's many historical novels. Have yet to find a non-fiction novelist who can capture me the same. Thank you Andrew for sharing this interview.
When people rave about a new show that the source material comes from already published novels...I read the book and ignore the show because I know "they" will screw it up
I will add both books to my reading list
Those responsible for these disappearances without a trace either eat them during sacrificial ceremonies of their tortured subject, or they feed them to sharks, gators etc etc. They probably have hundreds of ways, favoring a select few.

Sharks, gators, CATS, etc etc. You conveniently left out CATS. We see right through you! GUILTY. lol.
His passion is very inspiring, I admire him
I still read, the book, it's in my head. Love it. This is my lane.😊
Just bought the audible. Great book
Thank goodness he didn't get on the Titanic, because I'd never hear the end of it.
Great book 😊
I bought this on Kindle the day it came out. It’s fascinating!
Love me some Klavan
Thank you Andrew, AGAIN!...
Great book, just finished it!
When does DW start filming the movie?
Interesting
Where is the audible version of the house of love and death?
Supportive comment ⛽️
BTW, I thought that everybody knew of Diesel the man and the engine, not just diesel, the fuel.

The trouble with a lot of audiobooks is that they are abridged.
I have heard of it.
Hah, I have listened to talk and pods for years, never heard an audio book. Still read, admit not as much.

Drew, I love you but…. Two guys who couldn’t fix a screen door try to explain to each other how a Diesel engine works. BTW, that lighter you show at 6:30 is NOT a compression lighter or the Tinder Lighter your guest is describing. It uses a flint and steel. Look for Fire Piston on KZread or Amazon for examples of a compression lighter that uses the Diesel principle. Your guest correctly points out that submarines used Diesel engines, but they were the exception. After coal, and until the advent of nuclear power, the great majority of all shipping used fuel oil to fire boilers which in turn powered steam piston engines or turbines, so just diesel-like fuel, no diesel engines. The book sounds interesting though, thanks for highlighting it. Now go outside and fix something.

I’ve been making Uboat audiobooks on my channel.. and “fuel-oil” is always used by the British to describe Diesel fuel. (in these documents I’m reading). I’m not saying ALL fuel-oil is Diesel but all Diesel may be considered Fuel-Oil.
Did he fail off the ship just asking

Douglas Brunt is married to Megyn Kelly. Lovely couple.
Question???? Is diesel a byproduct of gas??? Why does it cost more??? I have my own opinion...but curious 🤔😂🤣

Diesel fuel and gasoline are both refined from crude oil. Diesel is less refined and gasoline is highly refined.

Diesel costs more because of taxes and because of market demand.

Diesel’s first engine used coal dust for the fuel. That Tinder lighter was a Industrial Revolution version of a fire piston, used for starting fires by the, uh, Indonesians?
