She was happy to see Alison because she was upset with herself for hurting her, and then while Vanya was in “the room” she was only able to actually see Allison vote to let her go because when Allison showed the note to the others, she was facing the window and Vanya. The room was soundproof, so she couldn’t hear the others arguing for her

I think she could clearly see what was going on. Klaus made a move to try and open the door and Luther stopped him, Diego angrily pointing at Luther--hard to miss.

when Allison shot the gun, it was more to make Vania deaf. it was next to her ear. Vania can't focus her power if she can't hear sounds.

@@MarceloSilva-kp7mc I don’t think they were trying to put her down necessarily bc at the end of the day her powers are very powerful and can cause harm. I don’t agree with how everyone treated her growing up but I think the dad was just trying to do what seemed like the right thing especially after she kept causing harm to her nanny’s. So I think at the end of the day the dad was just worried abt everyone’s safety.

@@destiny._.23 The thing about that theory that I've just never understood is that he got grace before he made her stop using her powers otherwise they wouldn't have had her in the first place, and even if he was just trying to keep everyone safe he didn't need to put her on suppressants for the rest of her life (which I'm assuming was his plan), she was 4 at that time so of course she wasn't going to be able to handle her emotions and have fits if he actually cared he could have come back to her when she was older and could actually understand her decisions. So I don't think he actually cared about their safety I just think he didn't care enough to actually put the effort in to fix the problem.

I love that you recognized that Vanya never actually had any intention of causing the Apocalypse. That she just wanted to play her violin at the concert - and the more her siblings tried to stop her, the worse they made things. Maybe Vanya would've unintentionally caused the Apocalypse anyway, but she never had any plan or desire to do so.

“End of the day we blame Luther” so do I and I think most viewers agree

I rly hated how they treated Klaus, like I get it he was an addict and he acted irresponsibly sometimes, but he always showed up when they needed him and he was never much of a liar, like at all, he’s a bit out there and his stories are wild but I believe they are always true they have no real reason to not believe him, and yet they never do, they just kind of brush him off ALL the time and it rly pisses me off, even tho he was one of them, one of the “special ones” unlike vanya they still kinda treat him like an outsider, I mean they didn’t even look for him when he got kidnapped, and nobody asked abt it except 5 and he didn’t even ask abt the kidnapping Maybe it hits close to home cause that’s how my family is with me, I’m not an addict or anything but they still treat me like an outsider it’s just rly annoying and hurtful so I see where Vanya and Klaus are coming from the most Also I loved when Vanya became a villain I was literally cheering when she busted open that vault or whatever it was, and I love her new look

Klaus got that lady cop killed. He gave up the lab to Hazel and Cha-Cha so they would stop destroying his drugs, allowing them to set a trap that she stumbled into. Then he attracted her attention and got her to save him, but instead of staying to cover her back, he, a former super hero, ditched her and left her to die. "Acted irresponsibly at times" is a significant understatement. He was also the reason Jenkins got the book he used to learn about Vanya.

I love how you can’t fully blame one person. Leonard wouldn’t have got the book if Klaus didn’t throw away the stuff in the box. Vanya would have been able to control her powers if her dad treated her like the others. Vanya wouldn’t have been locked up if Allison didn’t go and meet her. Luther locked her up and annoyed her. Ben’s death separated them all up so they wouldn’t be as skilled if he didn’t. You can blame some of them more than the others, like Leonard, Reginald and Luther though.

I think the dad was able to time travel. That dialogue he had with Five at the beginning of the season where he tries to prohibit him to try to time jump felt to me like he had experienced it himself. Who knows, maybe he created that technology...

Time travel i don’t know but either way he was an alien, the scene you see at the beginning happens on another planet so it could be that earth was still in the 1800s while his planet was more developed and well he lived non stop on earth since he arrived so that made him over 200 years old minimum. So I doubt he had anything to do with the time travel technology but who knows.

@@dm_dude - Welllll...I think it’s more that they either didn’t have the budget or didn’t know what to make him look like in the first season, but by the second season they could do it properly. In other words, I think it’s just a little plot inconsistency based on planning/budget.

Reginald Hargreeves is actually an alien disguised as a wealthy entrepreneur. At least that's how the comic books tell it

I feel like people dont get that if they just didnt interupt her concert nothing would’ve happened. She clearly wasnt using her powers before she only used them when they started to attack her. The whole reason she went full on white violin mode was because she was harnessing the sound waves from the violin when she was using her powers. So people saying she would have self-destruct are wrong.

So, this doesn't happen in the comics. Klaus stops the moon piece that crashes into the earth with his telekinesis.............which he does have. There are actually a few cool and essential things that they didn't include in the show.

I mean them not being able to stop the world from ending created room for more interesting things to happen. like they werent even invested in stopping it until the last two episodes, only five was doing smth about it, so it will be interesting to see them actually trying to do something together.. if they had stopped it here it would be predictable, like every single other show of this type, so even if they did it just for the money, as long as they produce an equally good second season, I am up for it

I personally believe that Reginald placed the mental block using Allison then gave Vanya the violin and told her to master it so that she would have an outlet for her powers when he removed the mental block later. That way, he would be able to teach her to use her powers using a different method. He gave her his love's violin so he obviously cared about her. He's just emotionally unavailable. Which is really sad since Vanya ends up using the violin as an outlet anyway except she caused the apocalypse instead of using her powers for good.

I saw that too. I think they will learn that their father actually loved them and was preparing them. I even believe Luther's mission to the moon had a purpose.

You forget Vanya was going to cause the apocalypse no matter what, remember they all died at the Umbrella Academy in the first timeline. Vanya in the comics always causes the apocalypse in every timeline. In the comics Allison actually does shoot Vanya in the head and still causes the apocalypse.

I find it funny how so many people defended Vanya being manipulated so easily even though there were clear signs for her character in-universe that would have made it easily possible for her to come to the realisation that something's off at least a bit earlier. However, everyone seems to not hesitate to blame Luthor 100% even though his actions - while being extremely frustrating for us as viewers - make sense for the character since he doesn't have a lot of the information we have. He didn't know she was willing to talk, he just freshly learned what devistating powers she has and knows she can't control them. Subsequently his decision to lock her away made sense for his character because, unlike us, he also couldn't know that that would be the final nail in the coffin that would break her, since he isn't aware that she has such deep hatred and lust for revenge for the family based of the false idea that she has that the family knew of her powers and fear and opressed her willingly. Also many people called out that "she just wanted to play the song and if he hadn't intervened it wouldn't have happend" which seems clear to us since we're given the whole context. From his perspective however, he only knows 2 things: 1. She has devestating catastrophical powers that she possibly can't fully control or even if, she's mentally too unstable to use them responsibly and 2. She will cause the apocalypse somehow. He doesn't know how, why or when. So for him to gamble the entire world simply on the guess that she just wants to play the song even though she's destined to destroy the world somehow would be madness from his part (he obviously can't know at that point that his actions are exactly what will cause it). If you knew 100% that a person is destined to kill your family (and has already hurt someone you love like Allison for Luthor) but you don't know how, why or when I don't know how many chances you'll take before you try to stop that person and for him it wasn't only his family but the entire world at stake. So given the little information he has about her state and the "prophecy" if you will, it makes sense he tried everything to stop her somehow since he couldn't know that exactly causes it eventually.

Luther had no idea Vanya was destined to cause the end of the world, and he and the others said as much in this episode. Until 5 showed up with that newspaper, they assumed the end of the world was averted with Jenkin's death. That was made very clear to us the viewers, so you should have known that.

TBH, the difference is that one person's background that left him predisposed to do a terrible thing was one where they spent their entire life being told they were special and the best of their siblings and the worst part was being shipped off to the moon for being too annoying for their father to continue pretending to like. Vanya's entire life has been dictated by one sentence another person read out to her when she was four. People are more forgiving of faults that come from a traumatic backstory than those which come from privilege; you know, the same reason why we're more inclined to be forgiving to someone who killed a person in a barfight at nineteen after growing up an abused orphan than they would if it was a sitting U.S senator.

I don’t think you fully grasped how much damage they did to vanya. She didnt think anything was off because she was brainwashed to forget she had powers by allison. Leonard took her off her pills. And then he manipulated her. Those factors clearly indicate that even after all these years what allison did to vanya was still intact because ofc she wouldnt think anything was off SHE WAS BRAINWASHED TO FORGET.

Fun fact: in the comics the numbers are the order of how reginald thought how useful they were in terms of powers but in the series it’s by the millisecond they were born

Shayla Nash it is not just powers but how much they listen to him, 1 listens diligently making him the most useful.

Season 2 filming is complete and will be out later this year, likely in the summer. Re: Reginald - it is canon that he is an alien. that's why he looks the same age from when they were babies til basically when they were adults, and also explains the strange things from that beginning scene in this episode. Re: Pogo - I understand Vanya's frustration with him. I'm not saying I condone killing but I also don't feel sorry for him. he knew and kept all of Reginald's secrets and said nothing, even after his death. he knew Vanya needed help and did nothing. Re: Luther - you're right, he fucked up. he's a horrible leader and let his emotions for Allison get in the way. if he had just accepted Vanya into the family and listened to the others, the apocalypse would not have happened.

the_nikster because it ended up being a Destiny Trap, you can't change history if you are part of it (everyone else) and by trying to prevent it you end up causing it to happen (Number 5). The only way to stop it is to go back far enough to try and fix her giving you enough time to try and stop it from ever happening, which they are trying, or go down the comic route which wouldn't be possible since it looks like Klaus doesn't have Telekinesis or hasn't discovered it.

When she said that Allison broke her focus when she shot beside her ear I don’t think she distracted her because before we learnt in the show that she focused on a sound to use her power but I’m not too sure how her power works so I think Alison made her focus on the gunshot and because she it was soo loud it made her go unconscious

When Vanya focuses her powers ALL her senses are put towards it therefore when she focuses her powers her senses are left vulnerable therefore letting allison sneak up behind her and when allison shot the gun the gun the huge sound wave from the gun disrupted her powers.

So I have this theory for the beginning of this episode. I do own all the comics, but as far as I've read this isn't mentioned in there, so if this ends up being true it's not a spoiler, just a good guess. I assume these golden spores Hargreeves released were all the children and if he's an alien then maybe that's how they reproduce, they release the spores and they take a host who then birthes these children. So maybe he is their biological father and that woman was their biological mother and that's why he wanted to find all these children, they're his children. But also he wants them to protect the Earth from whatever faith has doomed his planet.

I doubt it tbh. It was "long ago" and I'm assuming before 1989 (actually before the 1920s, as that's when we see him on Earth). Plus that seemed to be another planet, so unless the spores travelled interdimensionally, it seems unlikely. On top of that, the comics have Luther/Allison, and Vanya/Diego as actual relationships, and I honestly cannot see Gerard Way writing full out biological incest. He even stated that the reason he had them back when he wrote the comic is he didn't see it incestual. Making them biologically related throws that through a loop. I just think the spore release had more to do with his wife's life ending, and symbolism, as well as a way to show watchers his planet.

Luther gets too much blame for ‘starting the apocalypse’. Vanya was always going to do it not matter what Luther did, y’all, that’s the whole point of the Comission. In the OG timeline he’s the one who ripped out Harold’s fake eye at the Academy!

It was already proved the timeline could be changed. Luther isnt the only cause. But hes ONE of many factors and It IS reasonable to blame him because after she hurt allison and killed leonard she clearly went back to them with no mean of harm yet his stupid self locked her up which triggered it.

Well technically vanya never caused the apocalypse because SHE IS the apocalypse here are the things that triggered her aka caused her to destroy the world. 1.) Leonard manupilated her and caused her to destroy the world the first time 2.)Luther locked her up causing her to get mad and possibly destroy the world after allison shot her 3.)she destroyed the moon and turned it into an asteroid and destroy the world yet again. And in season 2 spoiler: The FBI caused her to get mad again and start another apocalypse.

My cousin watched the whole season in one day, and she kept telling me to watch it but I didn't wanna watch it till season two was coming out soon, CANT WAIT :D

Ima tell y’all a little bit about them let’s start with number one Luther aka space boy he has superhuman strength and to save his life his father turned him into a half man half ape. now number two Diego aka the kraken he can hold his breath indefinitely and is very skilled with knives. now number three Allison aka the rumor she has the ability to instantly alter reality by telling a lie. now number four the klaus aka the seance he has the ability to speak with the dead and make them speak through him he can also communicate through television he can possess people he has telekinesis and he also has the ability to allow other people to see dead people and he can float if he takes his shoes and socks off. now number five aka the boy has the ability to teleport from one place to another he also can time travel. now number six ben aka the horror he has the ability to possess monsters from other dimensions through his skin he is deceased but most people believe that the monsters inside him killed him or he died on a mission. now number seven vanya aka the white violin she’s the most powerful of the umbrella academy she has the ability to release destructive waves of force using her violin that can be strong enough to cut someone’s throat or destroy an entire building with a single note.

In this timeline, Luther is pretty much the cause. However I’m thinking that since Vanya was always destined to cause the apocalypse, I think even if Luther has listened to his siblings, something else would’ve caused Vanya to explode. I can’t wait for season 2, I’m so ready to see a trailer already!

I think Reginald Hargreaves was a time traveler from the future. I dont know if he was from a different planet yet. But I think those lights he released in the beginning of this episodes. Were the cause of those woman getting pregnant. That's why he was interested in collecting all the children he could.

It was a fun season. However, it did suffer from a common flaw in these types of series, which is that the whole plot would fall apart if the characters had any of the conversations with each other that real people would DEFINITELY have in their situations. In other words, it is highly contrived to make them not have conversations they would definitely have, not reveal information to one another that they definitely would reveal, not ask questions of one another that they would definitely ask, etc., to allow us, the viewer, to rage in frustration over how close they are to solving everything with just a few words, but those words to not appear. Such contrivances knock the viewer out of the bubble of believing in the reality of the story, and prevent us from feeling as much as we otherwise could. There were enough good things that I still enjoyed it, but it could have been so much better if they writers had managed to overcome the challenges presented by the plot without resorting such so many conversational contrivances.

This review was a great ride, thanks for the videos. At least we only have about 7 Mo. until Season two. The Comic book compared to the show has some big changes, but those changes work for a TV show. The comic turns up the crazy to 11 which would have cost way more is effects and might not have translated. The characters are all way more screwed up and a lot more powerful in the books. I was wondering if you two read comic books? If so, do you have a Comixology account (Digital Comics) or are you only into paper comics? I happen to do both... but I've moved away from many of the major comic books because of the poor writing. (IMO) Still, there are a few comic books that hit hard. Like a moon crashing to earth and are worth the time and money. ***Spoiler*** Kinda*** Yeah, The Father is an ALIEN from a dying planet. That's why they showed all the spaceships leaving/ Flying away. At least in the comic book he's an Alien. They don't seem to have changed it in the show because they hinted at it with the ships. I believe he's still an Alien in the show and we'll learn more about him in the next season. I'm sure they will change some of the story to keep it fresh for the fans that read the comic. This show was Number one on Nextflix for a really long time. I was shocked at how long it took to get a 2nd season and I am wondering if they will keep the show going for 3-5 seasons? I think it's really worth the investment. The show is a significant upgrade when compared to other comic book shows that are on Netflix or other channels. You would never get a show like this on the CW or HBO.

In the comic the dad is an alien and wears a human disguise. This is revealed in one panel at the beginning of the comic and then never mentioned again (and it is far from the only thing. Other things include 'why the kids have powers' and 'There are gorillas on Mars'.)

I think once seeing her incredible, uncontrollable power made papa to subdue her power to prevent the catastrophy.

I just seen the entire season 1 for the first time. I could be wrong but i don't think that they are going back to when they where kids and that would fix the problem to fast and they not going to write the show like that. Remember that the time traveling boy turned in about when he went to meet his older brothers and sisters. He just can't calculate time travel good and that is the side effect of him doing it. Last time he time traveled he used the brief case from the Time Travel HQ to go back again. Now when he uses his own powers at the season final he turns his family into kids again. Meaning its him not that they are going to go back to when they was kids. To be honest they not that organized and smart in this show. Love the react .....Ken

The show made some changes to make v=Vanya more sympathetic so yes in the show really wasn't trying end the world where is the comics she actually plays a song called Apocalypse suite to try and end the world but 5 shoots her in the head and gives her amnesia

The only people Vanya had beef with was her family. And like we saw with her and Allison, as long as they didn't mess with her she was perfectly fine. So yea, she definitely wasn't out to destroy the world imo. I'd wager if Luther and Diego's hero complexes hadn't kicked in, all of that would have gone entirely different. But once they tried to jump her the end result was pretty much guaranteed. Now, it's possible something else would or could have happened to make her go haywire, but the whole world was still never her intention.

Except that usage was a reference to the Doctor Who episode "Blink", in which The Tenth Doctor is explaining how he can pass a message to someone after getting that exact message *from* her. Given that Tracer is the English character and has the power to affect time, it was more of a clever parallel joke, though the serious take in the Doctor Who reboot came first.

vanya was neglected by everyone so as she grew older she stopped trying to fit in. it is there fault not hers. they are the reason vanya caused the world to end. luther locked up vanya which made her angry, she has no control over her powers so she didnt do it intentionally. she was perfectly fine performing and she was fine when she saw allison bc she felt bad but when everyone ambushed her she lost control.

Luther did the right thing. The only other option was killing her, because she will eventually get angry again. Maybe not at Leonard, or her family, but it doesn't really matter. When her eyes changed, she was overwhelmed by her own power, and she was going to go critical whether they attacked her or not. It was the only way. Her powers come from sound, and shooting next to her head made her temporarily deaf. The amount of power required to destroy the Moon would also wipe out all life on Earth, even if it hadn't gone up into the sky like that. Like 5 said, it was always going to happen.

The comic is actually a far worse story telling medium for Umbrella Academy. This was a good change for TV. There is so much more potential for the story now

She’s a child with terrifying powers, that’s not a psycho you simpleton. Have you ever seen a child through a tantrum or get angry? Now imagine that child with reactionary powers (that can have a small or world changing effect). Next you magically mess with the child’s memory, you isolate her for long periods of time, and you give her pills to suppress her emotions. Would do you think is going to happen?

She didn’t want to kill the Nannie’s, she just didn’t like porridge and the tea kettle was going insane, instead of helping her control it they emotionally castrated her for 26 years. It’s not all her fault. Harold, Allison, and Luther and all the lies and abuse were the fuse, they’re as much to blame, sadly.
