The Ultra Shoe PARADOX

Спорт

This is a review of the Mount to Coast R1 Ultra racing shoe. Upper, midsole, outsole - what it feels like to run in this shoe. This video is also an exploration of what exactly makes a successful Ultra Marathon shoe. I tackle briefly the history and marketing of this running shoe.
DISCLAIMER: These shoes were sent to me. I am mostly a marathon runner and have only ever run past the distance a few times in training.

I bought a pair of Mount to Coast R1 for daily training. I'm not an ultra runner, but I have to say, they are extremely comfortable. My thought was, if a shoe can make running 854 miles comfortable, then running 5 miles or 10 miles would be a breeze. Fortunately, I was right. I'm not a big fan of high stack shoes; when the body is tired, high stack, soft shoes can easily cause ankle sprains, and they are too heavy.

Brilliant! They’re good for walking too minus the squeaking noise - which I somehow forgot to mention in the review .

Coincidentally I almost bought this shoe last week. The thought process was a shoe designed for ultras would be a good shoe for someone that runs over 4 hours for a marathon.

Yeah, it’s on the list. There are so many other shoes good for that as well.

The blank anti-sag piece is apparently preventing the running form breaking down on long runs hence help maintaining the efficiency of stride and is made by german BASF. I like that if it really works. They have a training partner S1 with more sturdy outsole and higher drop (10mm). Apparently they are also working on a trail ultra version of R1 with a different outsole. That said, at $160, it could be a decent trainer for daily training shoe for average non-ultra runner without breaking the bank.

I ran my first ultra in a triumph 19, in waxahachie.., my second ultra I ran in caldera 6’s and switched to tecton x 1’s at the halfway point. In hindsight I probably could have ran the whole race in either.., but hey, hindsight. Great video

Great review, Andrew, as always. In the fall, I'm running a fasted 5 x 5; i.e., five marathons in five days completely fasted. Would you recommend using this shoe for all five days, or do you recommend rotating it with another shoe to allow the midsole to relax? Thx, Andrew.

I’m a big fan of variety, personally. So, I would mix it up. I like big max stack shoes and I like more minimal (for 2024), like rebel v3 or vomero. Sometimes firm, sometimes soft. I would take this and maybe a skyward x, a prime x strung or an SC trainer - something with stack and protection for the legs . That’s awesome about the 5x5. I’ve been IF lately but not making videos about it because I just get shit on

@MidLifeRunner I have both the SC v2 & the Superblast; so I may stick with them. Towards the end of your video, you mentioned fat adaptation. I've been completely fat-adapted for over three years, not having eaten carbs or plants, only ruminants, water & salt. At the end of March, I sprinted across the marathon finish line with yet another Boston Marathon qualifying time. So, there's something to be said for being fat-adaptated. That's one of the reasons why I'm doing this fasted 5x5. Thx, Andrew.

Can you make a video about the training plan you will use for the Marine Corps Marathon this fall? I’m also registered, and starting to think what type of plan I will follow (33rd marathon, but always like to try new methods!). Thanks

  • @MidLifeRunner

Absolutely. My coach (Matt Fox) writes the plan 2 weeks at a time but I do plan on covering it. I have a 5k June 9, June 30 and a 10k August 3. I will transition to marathon training August 25 for ten weeks. He says we basically just work on speed until then and then hit the endurance part.
