On Day 10 in Taipei, Taiwan, Ying and I decided to take a day trip to Jiufen (of Jiu Fen) and on to Keelung City and have a day of eating Taiwanese street food. I’m extremely happy we had a chance to briefly visit both Jiufen and Keelung City. I’ll just quickly go over where and how we went from Taipei to Jiufen and then on to Keelung City using timecodes so you can come back to a location in the video easily if you want to.
0:38 How to Get from Taipei to Jiufen by Bus
Using the directly I read off Wikipedia travel guide, we took the Taipei Metro to Zhongxiao Fuxing Station, then took exit 1 (Andong Street) and made an immediate u-turn, walked to the intersection and made a left, and then the bus stop was right there on the right hand side. We somehow arrived to the bus stop right as 1062 arrived and if Taiwan couldn’t make things any more easy and efficient we boarded the bus using our easy cards. The bus ride from Taipei central there to the small town of Jiufen took just over 1 hour, and we soon arrived in the touristy, but very beautiful and pleasant town of Jiufen - which is one of the biggest little tourist towns in Taiwan. You can choose to take a day trip to Jiufen from Taipei like we did, or you can even spend the night or a few nights there.
2:45 Taiwanese street food at Jiufen
Jiufen is a small little mountain town in Taiwan about 1 hour from Taipei with a great view of the ocean… and it’s turned into a major tourism destination. Although you can go there to do some shopping and buy some souvenirs, by far the main reason to go to Jiufen on a day trip is to eat as much Taiwanese street food and snacks as you can - and also there are plenty of sit-down restaurant you can eat at as well. Ying and I started our day of eating Taiwan street food by eating a plate of snails and a plate of grilled squid, both of which had quite a similar texture, and the flavor was delicious. After the snails and squid, I couldn’t resist having a Taiwanese tea egg, one of the most popular snacks. After walking around and taking loads of photos of the picturesque scenes around Jiufen, Ying and I stopped at a real restaurant to take a little break, cool down from the hot sun, and eat some more food - this time at a real restaurant. I tried a dish called three cup chicken, which was deliciously comforting. Another very famous food to eat in Jiufen is the sweet taro balls, which was pretty good.
12:24 How to get from Jiufen to Keelung City on Bus #788
After spending a few hours wandering around Jiufen, we took the bus from just up the road directly to Keelung City, one of the harbour towns in Taiwan, and about a 45 minute drive from Jiufen. The reason we wanted to go to Keelung City was to go to Keelung Miaokou Night Market, one of the most famous Taiwanese street food markets in Taiwan.
13:35 Street food at Keelung Miaokou Night Market
One of the most well known night markets in Taiwan is Keelung Miaokou Night Market, located right in Keelung City, and home to an abundance of delicious things to eat. I was actually still quite full from all the food we had already eaten in Jiufen, but I did manage to try a few things at the night market, and also I just really enjoyed the ambiance and atmosphere of the market. Ying and I luckily got a table and chairs at a small street food stall serving long finger sized dumplings, which were similar to gyoza. They were filled with minced pork and lots of green onions. Along with a plate of pickled cucumbers, and a plate of tofu, they were some of the best potsticker style dumplings I had on my entire trip to Taiwan. I also tried crab soup, and a famous street food called a Nutritious Sandwich.
Day 10 in Taiwan, and eating all sorts of Taiwanese street food snacks in both Jiufen and Keelung City was an excellent day trip.

+myzer333 I think Taiwan has better quality but Singapore has more diversity of really good food because it's very globalised. But it's more of things from around the world rather than local diverse cuisine. So it depends on what you're looking for. You can definitely find more types of restaurants in Singapore but most people wouldn't travel to look for different restaurants to eat at.

Nutritious Sandwich was invented to serve American Sailors. After WWII, the American Navy ships were frequently docked in Keelung. The sailors wanted sandwiches, but the average Taiwanese home doesn't have ovens to bake bread, so someone deep fried the dough, and made what they thought a sandwich should have, ham, eggs, pickle and mayo. So what you ate is actually an old Taiwanese interpretation of American food.

hiroanz And it's called Nutritious Sandwich because after WWII, malnutrition was common. A high calorie sandwich with fried bread and sweet mayo is considered "nutritious" :)

When I visited Taiwan for the first time in 25 years after immigrating to the US, I was fortunate enough to have gone to both these locations. One of my favorite memories was sitting in the back of one of the taro ball restaurants and watching the bay, with the occasional breeze enjoying a cup of the icy taro ball soup. That lively atmosphere at Keelung was just insanely awesome as well.

Sweet work man. Makes me miss it all! My wife is Taiwanese, I've been there 3 times in the last 2 years and every time I'm straight back to the markets. We live in Western Australia and even though we are both chefs & cook a lot of Taiwanese stuff at home, you just can't replicate the atmosphere, the sounds and smells, of being there. Whenever we come back we have 80kg of stuff, (as well as boxes in shipping / air freight transit) that is all food products so we can keep stocked up until the next time!! It's like the once a year ultimate Asian shopping trip for foodies... Well Done :)

haha i was just here like 2 months ago, taipei is amazing, especially Jiufen, I literally spent the whole day there! But you missed out a lot in Jiufen!!! You should've tried their HUGE fishballs in soup, the icecream-peanut taco, the see-through red pork meat thingy, and their sausage wrapped inside a rice sausage (like a hotdog). Most importantly, that "pictureresque" street you were talking about was the street that actually inspired Hayao Miyazaki's film Spirited Away, and that street is most beautiful at night when all the red lanterns are turned on, you should've picked Jiufen to go last so you can witness it!! But anyways love your vid :)

I lived in Taipei for two years. I would have stayed, but my company did not give me a choice. There is a tiny, black, snail that is cooked in a garlic sauce. They don't remove the valve, and serve it with tooth pics. You remove the valve and pull out the snail. They are so delicious. They also serve a sea worm that is pickled in rice wine. You really don't care that you are eating worm after the first few. lol

This was a truly incredible fantastic Vlog!!! I could almost smell the aroma of those food markets, so many textures and beautiful vibrant colours of delight! One of my favourite all time videos Mark!! I feel I need to watch over and over again and again because you have crammed so much into this vlog!! Again I also must say how professional your post production and editing skills are fantastic. Please can you tell me what camera you are using as the video quality is amazing. Thank you so very much for sharing this amazing experience :) Ryan.

The snails are what we in London call whelks, sea snails, if you look to where the chef is shelling them you can see the barnacles on the shells. mmm good old Cockney delicacy served with pepper and chilli vinegar.

We followed Mark and Ying's Juifen trip. Exactly the way they approached it. Without this video, we could have easily missed Juifen. Although the place was definitely touristy, it turned out to be one of the best places to visit in Taiwan. Thank you again Mark and Ying!

There isn't a lot to eat in jiufen (a lot of the same food) as there is sightseeing. FUN FACT: Jiufen used to be a mining town in the 1800s they struck gold and opened up jiufen. Jiu Chinese means nine because there used to be nine families living there, struck gold, separated in nine portions and everybody went there separate ways I guess. A little fun history lesson.
