    Great review. I've long been a fan of the MM300 family. Brilliant tool watch and very good looking. I think the latest version is superb - better lume and sapphire. BUT... That Prospex logo??? WTF? Looks like a crummy games console. Why does the mighty Seiko need to sub-brand these flagship models?

    For my scrawny wrist,the stock bracelet really spreads the weight evenly. It feels top-heavy on a Nato and the stock silicone strap. Immediately noticeable.

    Another great review. True to Seiko form this is an excellent diver example. Clean. Crisp and solid! Not a big fan of the no case back but in reality most of us don’t service our own watches so not that big a deal. Size wise when you said 44mm I knew it was too big for my wrist but next to the SKX it didn’t look too much bigger. I like the watch much better on the strap or after market bracelet. Never been a fan of the Seiko bracelets or clasps. Seiko needs to do more simple style oyster bracelets like the aftermarket you displayed. A dive watch doesn’t need a fancy bracelet. Also agree on the stamped logo vs an applied one. It would have been too much going in a relative small dial given the size of the indices and hands. Impeccable movement as well. :-). Price point would have been great here perhaps for comparison purposes.

    And I thought my 45.5 mm Planet Ocean was a big diver watch! This MM300 is definitely a watch that could anchor a collection due to its relative exclusivity, excellent finish and details, and a very fine automatic movement. I think it looks great on your wrist. I actually like the looks of the Strapcode bracelet a little better due to the link design. One thing I can't wrap my head around is how they open this watch for service. If the crystal is pressed into the case to seal it, how in the world does a watchmaker pry it out? I was hoping you could show us that when you offered to pop it off. Oh, wait... Last thought and that it about straps. The lug width is 20 mm and on a 44 mm case it might look a little too skinny. It's my one complaint about the Sumo, with similar proportions. Interestingly, the 42 mm SKX007/9 sports a 22 mm lug width. The MM300's Seiko silicone strap extends out past the lug openings by a millimeter or two and I think that helps aesthetically -- at least to my eye. Congrats on this really fine Seiko Bob and I hope you get many years of excellent performance from it!

  • @TimeToGoTravelAndTimepieces

    @TimeToGoTravelAndTimepieces

    Funny you mention the crystal. I've wondered the same thing since I've had it. A Seiko dealer I've dealt with here in Toronto (also the place the original owner of mine bought it) serviced my friends 001 and that's the first question I'm asking next time I'm there. Wonder if the bezel is off if there's a place to pry from somehow. Like I mentioned I'm not usually a fan of that style of strap but did it ever look good on it. I'd love to find a flatter style strap without the ripples that have that same jut out like the Seiko one. Google here I come! Thanks Lee and I'll definitely be enjoying this one for a long time to come.

    The mm 200 has red in the stoplight second hand, clearly the best mm second hand. The turtle has the double coin bezel, clearly the best. A sunburst dial, with Marine Master ommitted, looks best--jmo.

    You one year late ! Now the ultimate Seiko diver watch is the Prospex LX reference SNR029J presented at baselworld 2019, so 2 months ago : this new watch is also 300m water resistance, full titanium (witch is 40% lighter than the SLA021J sainless steel model), with the super accurate Grand Seiko movement : Spring Drive (witch is 15 times more accurate than the 8L35, with 72 hours power reserve instead of 50 hours of the 8L35). Ceramic bezel and sapphire cristal. So the ultimate Seiko diver is defenetly the Prospex LX SNR029J ! But anyway, the Prospex SLA021 you show on the video is an amazing watch. A marinemaster with sapphire cristal and ceramic bezel. And the 8L35 is not garbage at all. It's a super automatic mouvement. And it runs without service during at least 10 years ! I really don’t like the ‘diver industry’ normalizing a case thickness of 15mm plus as being normal or “chunky”. You showed the SKX profile against this SBDX023 and it looks HUGE in comparison. I have a Tudor BB homage/case replica (Neymar 300) and its hard to wear with a sleeved shirt or jacket. I really think Tudor kindof normalized the 15mm thickness with its great popularity. IMO - a watch of the SBDX price point & design should yield a case thickness of 13mm or less. Look at the Seiko 6309 divers, granted not a front load design (which should have the ability to lessen the thickness) was 40mm diameter and 13mm thick. Why is this new SBDX/SLA 2mm thicker? GREAT review and really like your format/content...

  • @TimeToGoTravelAndTimepieces

    Seems alot definitely have that thicker profile. With this at 13mm or less it would definitely be easier to wear in more situations. Certainly isn't going to slip under a shirt sleave easily. I had two (017) and I sold both. I love the case and the bezel. Really in a class of its own. However, not everything is perfect: The bracelet is really low-end compared to the case. The opening of the dial is very small, which makes the watch look much smaller than the numbers suggest. The watch is too high and therefore top heavy and it should be worn well adjusted otherwise it moves a lot on the wrist. I nicknamed mine my « mini tower » ! The crown action is not good and the movement is not accurate. Besides, it's a lot of money for a Seiko watch. You will not get the same recognition as with a Tudor or Omega.

    When is Seiko/GS going to make a quick micro-adjust clasp worthy of their watches!? That is the laziest designed quick-adjust out there. This is coming in at is a entry level luxury watch price point and the clasp looks like stamped sheet-metal. Do better Seiko / GS! If this had a Tudor Pelagos clasp on it, this would defiantly be a winner for those with large wrist. Thin down the case, make it 39-40mm with the Pelagos clasp and improve the bezel action and that watch would shake up the industry.
