Tudor Pelagos VS Seiko Marinemaster 300 Comparison: Which Is The Ultimate Tool Dive Watch?

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

The world of dive watches is vast starting from the likes of Seiko, Tudor, Omega, and of course Rolex. However, I believe the two best tool dive watches, regardless of price, are the Tudor Pelagos M25600TN and the Seiko Marinemaster SLA021 (SBDX023). Each one offers an experience that pretty much cannot be replicated by any other dive watch. If you want to get the full Pelagos experience or the full Marinemaster 300 experience, you pretty much have to get a Pelagos or a Marinemaster 300.
In this video I compare these two incredible and iconic dive watches and score the dial/hands, case, bracelet, movement, on the wrist feel, value, strapmonsterability, uniqueness, and my very own TWI Happy Index. At the base level both of these watches are similar because they are high level brutal tool watches from two mega brands. But these two watches show us very pure forms of Swiss watchmaking vs Japanese watchmaking, which results in two very different watches. The look and feel of the titanium Pelagos is special and the brutal efficiency of its entire design is striking. The Marinemaster 300, on the other hand, showcases the Japanese ethos of going over the top in the best way possible. The zaratsu finished bevels on the curvy monobloc case and the beautiful brushed and polished handset manage to integrate perfectly with a watch that is still undeniably a next level tool watch. Either way you go, Pelagos or Marinemaster 300, you’re going to be getting one of the best dive watches on the market.
WATCHES FOR SALE:
As mentioned in the video I am selling my Seiko SSC813 (SBDL085) Speedtimer (panda dial version) and I am selling my beloved Seiko Marinemaster 300 SLA021 (SBDX023).
The SSC813 is for sale for $575 with full box and papers ($100 less than sticker on a watch that is sold out everywhere so the price is fixed). This price includes shipping up to $20. Anything more will be added to the price after getting a quote based on your zip code.
As for the Marinemaster 300, it is on sale for $2500 with full box and papers. It was purchased in the summer of 2019 and I have been the only owner of it. As you can see from the video it is pretty much spotless. Price for shipping will be determined by your zip code but if its close to Maryland, US then it will likely be free. Let me know if you have any questions!
Also I am selling many other watches as part of my slow paced purge including my Omega Speedmaster X-33 Skywalker, Zelos Swordfish 40 Teal, Lorier Hydra Series II Blue, Visitor Linden Larkspur, and my Islander ISL-27. Check them out the intro to this video: • Seiko Alpinist SARB017...

I own both of these watches and they are totally different watches. My MM300 is my work watch as part of my job is diving. My Pelagos is my weekend or dress up watch. One thing is that the Pelagos hurts my wrist if I wear it for a full day.The crown at 4oclock on the MM helps so much and that’s not an issue. Both are keepers that have a permanent home.

Great vid and comparison, captured the pros and cons really well, bit harsh on the 8L35 movement which is an in-house, master crafted tank. Value retention contest goes to the Seiko here. Overall different pieces, despite the 500m label Pelagos in titanium is a luxe item worn and traded by watch enthusiasts and celebs like Beckham; mm300 with monocoque steel case is the essential tool watch for divers and weekend warriors alike.

I agree 100% the Seiko is a real life every day diving watch..it can take the abuse..the first thing I noticed was the weight, heft of the thing..built for punishment of the sea..

Pelagos feels like a cheap toy watch in the hand, the looks stade. The Seiko has heft and more character. Its a saturation diver with much more intent. A watch that will never get boring

After seeing my friends Pelagos drop from 3ft onto concrete and stop winding and had to go back to Tudor for repair, I conclude these watches are not tool watches. The SNE569P1 is your only tool diver. Good video anyhow.

I must respectfully disagree. These are both super watches; but they aren't in the same league. The Pelagos lists for $17-hundred more. And it shows. If the Tudor was a 3-thousand dollar watch, it wouldn't be a contest. That being said, I'd have the MM300. I'm a Seikopath.

Love the vid; you always put together such an insightful package. The best tool diver from Seiko, for me, is going to be a Tuna. That Pelagos is a machine. I can't get on with it looks-wise (the Marine Master kills it) but something about the uncompromising toolness of the Pelagos is just totally impressive.

Thank you so much David that means a lot to me! Glad you enjoyed the video! Yeah the Tuna is a formidable tool watch no doubt and I had one for about 1.5 years before selling it and I really miss it (especially the insane lume). Yeah in terms of looks I cant get enough of the MM300 but i think getting a SPB185 might be the best way to experience most of the curves and finishing of the MM300 while getting extra usability. However, the SPB185 is an option only because I've fully experienced the MM300. The pelagos is always there ready to do whatever is needed of it and i dont think the intense contrast between the hands/indices and the dial will ever get old!

Thanks for a great video. I had a sbdx001 which I sold a few years ago and I kind of miss it. I sold it, as like you say it wasn't getting enough wristime. I also have the Pelagos lhd, Omega PO 2500 in 42mm (my fav), 168000 transitional Sub as well as a few vintage Seiko 6105 and 6306-7000's. I was thinking about buying another MM300, especially I love the gold seconds hand but I am a Prospex X hater! Your review is accurate about the MM300 drawbacks and you may have saved me the money from buying a "nostalgic" purchase. I might just save a little longer and try a titanium GS spring drive diver or the Omega NTTD.

Great comparison! These 2 watches are on my radar, as well the Omega seamaster 300. This is what I'm thinking, as dumb as it sounds, but I've been researching for months. This is a big purchase for me. I'm leaning towards the Tudor. As much as I love the Seiko, it still is a Seiko. The Omega looks like a dad watch, especially the bracelet(yes, I'm a dad), and the Tudor just looks modern and badass at the same time. Thanks for the review!

Agreed on the poor bracelet of the mm, however let's not forget to mention that there's many options available with great bracelets from strap code tailored to the mm, and it's fairly priced... I think it's worth mentioning about those aftermarket options 👍🏻 Had the pelagos and it felt dull, flipped it after few months... I still have 2 mm 300 as keepers, the sbdx012 and the sla023, to me the best divers on the market and yet reasonably priced. Great review nonetheless bud 🍻

I disagree, I find the OEM bracelet on the MM300 is fine and does a good job supporting the watch. I INITUALLY sisnt like it, however, over time I appreciate it. I think the issue is that people are so used to hearing how bad it is, it becomes expected. IMHO the issue is that due to the size of the links you have to ensure that the clasp is properly located on the wrist for the OEM bracelet to sit properly. The clasp is long so the 6 o clock side needs to be one pink shorter than the 12 o clock side to position the clasp on the curve of the wrist and to avoid kicking. Every time I have seen a 'bracelet crap' review, the bracelet is never ever properly fitted to the wrist in this way. Set it up properly and its absolutely fine e and comfortable. Furthermore, I have never, ever, had a problem with activation the wetsuit extension by accident, on my watch it is actually quite tricky to extend it.

No one has mentioned the dreaded R word. Sister company to Rolex or not, makes it hard for me to buy a Tudor. I’d always wish it was a R submariner. But because the cynical restriction of supply Rolex does, has pumped the prices of both brands, so now I don’t want either. It’s much like the way De Beers restrictions the prices of diamonds to artificially keep the prices high. I can’t abide by this cynical kind of price pumping.

A very well put together video TWI, I've never worn a Marinemaster but I do have the Pelagos. Like you mine is the most comfortable watch that I own. That's probably because it's made from titanium and the fit with that bracelet is perfect. It is a big watch though but is also one of the best to read the time at a glance. Mine is the LHD version that has a slight cream colour to the hands and markers (also has that roulette wheel date ring) so I'd guess that the one you have would be a bit better to read at a glance. One other thing I love about the Pelagos is that the hand stack and dial fit very close to that sapphire crystal. I certainly do not wish to sell mine.

The LHD version has always interested me and i feel like if it was 40mm then I would be really tempted to get one without stepping on the toes of my pelagos. fingers crossed for 2022 lol! Yessssss I forgot to mention that in the video but yeah the tight tolerances of the dial on the pelagos is really cool kind of in the same way that the intense depth of the dial and crystal on the MM300 is really cool. If I had to sell all my watches except one, my Pelagos would be the last one standing!

One of the other reasons I went for the LHD at the AD was that they are all numbered and the one that was shown to me ended in 633, "633 Squadron" was one of my parents favourite black and white movies from the middle of the last century so that was the final decision on the purchase.

Attitude for this one. This one is my grail diver. The other is on the OEM bracelet. I got a great fit on it. Like it on this watch. The bracelet balances out the heavy watch head. Love my blue Pelagos. Have no experience with the Seiko so I won't comment but will say accuracy is pretty important to me. One thing I noticed is you didn't mention the Pelagos comes with a rubber strap. It's not great but it is more.than serviceable and it has an extension piece so you can wear the watch over a wet suite. Last comment I have no idea why people have a problem with the titanium it sure doesn't wear to light and has a very nice warmth to it on the wrist I have a small wrist and the Pelagos disappears on my wrist five minutes after putting it on.

Yeah accuracy is important to me so thankfully I was able to communicate with Gnomon Watches before buying my MM300 and I asked them to send me one that is accurate and they sent me a pic of the watch on a timegrapher which was very nice of them! Honestly I completely forgot about the Pelagos rubber strap! Thats pretty much down to it being extremely uncomfortable on my particular wrist. since its quite stiff and the top ends are thick, it pinchs the top of my wrist too much and t was unwearable. I really wish it was better bc it would have been a really cool look! But yeah I'm with you, I absolutely all things titanium, the experience and comfort are unlike anything else and as for the Pelagos it has heft but it makes the watch just light enough to make it disappear!

It’s my activity watch - sailing, climbing, backpacking, etc. - so it’s always on rubber. I’ve beaten the hell out of mine. It still looks great and runs at 1.5 spd on wrist. A really amazing bit of kit. As for the Seiko’s bracelet, its subpar nature is no surprise, really. Seiko just don’t do bracelets well. Part of the reason I sold my SPB185 was the craptacular bracelet. Even the bracelet on my SBGE255 is just okay (maybe good) when it should be great.

I just got the blue mm300 and it’s an incredible dial. The layout of the dial and overall look of the watch is one of the best I’ve owned, it genuinely makes me smile. I’ve always loved the blue pelagos but for me (and my 7in wrist) it just wears a bit big/awkward in comparison. The mm300 and bb58 both wear really well but the mm300 has a lot more heft which I like as I’m a bigger guy. The case shape curves nicely on the Seiko. I don’t hate the mm300 bracelet like many do but I do also wear it on a variety of rubber straps and natos and it looks great on all of them. The pelagos comes with bracelet and rubber too and looks great on both but I don’t see the pelagos looking as good on a leather strap or even a nato… in fact the pelagos on any rubber strap may not even worn but the Seiko works great on pretty much any rubber strap. Both clasps are great but the quality of the pelagos clasp/bracelet is better as you’d expect at that price difference. (I got a new mm300 for 35% off easily enough but there’s little to no discount on a pelagos.) Accuracy/movement as you say - both are great movements but there’s no “luck of the draw” with the tudor regarding accuracy. The Seiko movement is cool and fine but Tudor is just better.

Seiko's has more accuracy than any Swiss watches and many Swiss watch companies take expired old and out dated patents from Seiko and move that old technology into their watches while Seiko is on their 200+ patents leaving them all behind, I'm staying with the Seiko marine master spring drive, the most accurate watch the most over engineered watch ever built.

Two great watches that I’ve wanted for a while. I previously owned and sold a sbdx017 but caved in and got a sla023 (blue version) and I love it. The pelagos was in my thoughts but for me despite the weight difference it just wears a bit bigger on my 7in wrist. Despite the measurements and weight the mm300 wears really well for me- maybe as I’m quite big (fat😄) and I like the solid feeling of heft. Anyway great video and whilst I didn’t agree on every part (be a bit weird if I did!) it certainly made me reconsider the pelagos but for now I’ll enjoy the Seiko, which was about half the price of the pelagos. And maybe in a year or two I’ll come back to the pelagos. If both watches were a millimetre thinner/smaller here and there they’d both be perfect. But I do feel that the Seiko perfectly imperfect as all its flaws are part of its character (something Seiko manage to get away with that most other brands can’t. It’s a sort of X factor/tool watch thing that allows owners to laugh about faults that would be a big deal with any other brand!).

That Pelagos is one of the best diver watches on the planet. Maybe right after the Seadweller 4000 which is the best imo. I just found one ;) but I also had the Pelagos and sometimes I miss it because it wears like a dream! Not to big and not to small. And the bracelet is also one of the best! That having said : The MM300 is also a georgeous watch (the SLA047) Only that bracelet is to fat for me. On the rubber strap it wears I think. And about the movement : It is one of the best and keeps time for many years once you regulate it. Believe me there is NOTHING wrong with that GS movement in it!

So, 500m depth rating is just a gimmick. Saturation diving at that depth is so rare that anyone of the handful of humans that have been there in the last 50 years are not the likely customer base for a Tudor Pelagos. If those guys were not wearing a Rolex at those depths, it was likely because they didn’t bring it on the job and brought a knocker instead. I wonder how well the titanium bracelet and case would withstand the rigorous professional diving environment in terms of scratches and so on. The coating on a MM can look brand new even after some pretty tough thorough goings.

No comparison in my opinion. The MM300 has “wow” factor the Pelagos will never have. Amazing character, fit, and build. The deep balanced dial is outstanding. Wearing it on rubber is juvenile. Leather, fabric, and NATO with the MM is awesome. Extremely versatile watch. The Tudor is truly boring and bland in person. This scoring is nonsense.

Thank you for a very interesting comparison on two great watches, however they are two quite different watches and as such comparisons can be very much objectified, such as when comparing the movements, you didn't really draw any significance about the date complication, which can be a make or brake point for some people? Again the on the wrist experience can be very different from one watch and wrist to another? Personally I think the MM300 is far closer to a Tudor 'Black Bay' as it's down to the size and how it wears, the rest of the dynamics are purely personal choice!
