The Ultimate Pickup (episode X)

This isn't the pickup you've been waiting for, this is much better. :-) There is no radical change in the concept, but by using the new planetary hubs, I could increase the weight without compromising it's offroad capabilities. That means the build is bigger and more detailed than the predecessors while in (crawling) performance remains way above them.
This MOC also nswers the question, made by many: How to build a decent solid axle with the new hubs. ;-)
No need to ask for instructions, it will be some day in the future. (Just to clarify, I didn't even begin to work on it yet. )
Talking of the long waited episod (not this one), it is yet to come, but not far now.... :-D

    You really have thought of everything with this build! It’s definitely got incredible crawling/climbing ability thanks to all of your great solutions. - it’s also very interesting to see just how much this build has developed since your ‘concept’ in episode 1!

    Thank you, planning to make a non motorised version of this one. That will be an even better base to compare with the concept. Yet to dream up a gearbox it deserves. The restis childplay. :-)

    I call it wireframe and blame it on the old sets, like the 8880. Back then panels weren't used so extensively. Besides, most of the interesting stuff is under the body, so why would I hide it? 😉

    woah. someone had to do it. 😮 as simple as never thought. basically surrender to the idea that you can't pretend great ground clearance from live axles unless using portal hubs, with all their cons. i won't build a straight live axle anymore. no, not true. 👍

    This is stunning work. Love the look and performance. Really nice and unique build style. Definitely one of the most interesting MOCs this year. The only thing that strikes me as a little odd is how the hood opens. But I guess that is also part of your build style :)

  • @Attika

    @Attika

    4 жыл бұрын

    Many thanks. :-D Talking of the hood, it meant to be a little more sophisticated than a common hinge. Bit of a touch, I guess. Was that odd feeling odd in a good way, or odd in a bad way? Probably I didn't find the right angle to demonstrate. However, I have to admit, the tailgate didn't get that much attention in design. :-D

  • @Kelkschiz

    @@Attika It's hard to explain. Thinking about it some more I've come to the conclusion that I know too little about the subject. I've seen hoods do things that look a lot like what yours is doing. Of course most LEGO MOCs don't go beyond a simple hinge. It's mostly the part in the middle that seems to have a different hinging point. I remember your 8880 had something a little similar with the rear door. The 'odd' is definitely a mostly good odd ;). The thing is that I have a hard time seeing it work in real-life. But perhaps I just don't know anything about hoods, because I really don't know anything about hoods :P.

  • @Attika

    @Attika

    :-D Didn't want to corner you, sorry. Indeed, the obsession around the 8880 left it's footprint on my style. :-) Might be a bit dense, you're right. That middle "air intake" looking object. Slides into the tip of the hood. Nowhere close to a realistic solution. Yet. :-D Hope I can influence some car designer and one day becomes realistic. :-D In the other hand, the side bits, or main hinges are in everyday use, so that balances out my reckless rant in the middle. :-)

    P.S. regarding the quarter stud mystery. You could use a combiantion of a U joint and an old 14 tooth gear or a minifig holder (42446) as a spacer on the 2L axle.

  • @Attika

    @Attika

    4 жыл бұрын

    In theory, you are right, those would fill the gap. When I'm trying to picture it, well, it is a bit strange to see those elements rotating there. I know cutting axles isn't fun for all, so just fill the gap inside the old male cv with a piece of tissue, or anything you can push inside that axle hole. :-D If the old cv was to be replaced with a uni joint, then the pivot of the uni' would be 1 stud further towards the wheel, so the angle of the driveshaft would be steeper. And that cost efficiency. I need every single degree to be saved and let the torque pass through with the less friction as possible. Ideal would be a straight axle from the diff to the wheels and it is already compromised for the given design. But mainly: The price is 1 cent a piece on bricklink. Worth it, as I said. ;-)

    Oops, I've missed your comment here. :-D It's the ground clearance what brought this idea. If it was used with the claas tyres, it would give 6 studs under the diff. Hope the pics help if you were to try yourself. :-)

  • @Attika

    @Attika

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hey Nico, no I didn't. Honestly it didn't come in mind until Zerobricks mentioned it yesterday. While it is filling the gap, I think it would look strange to see a cog rotating there 5 times faster then the wheel. It is rather a madmax style accessory. 😁

  • @Attika

    @Attika

    4 жыл бұрын

    I've tried the 14t gears. There is a collar on the bottom. It's more than 1/4 stud and stresses the drivetrain quite significantly. I have to admit though, it wasn't that strange looking as I thought in advance, but the size isn't right for the job.
