The "Ultimate" NAS Build - ft. HP ProLiant MicroServer N36L & TrueNAS!

Музыка

Join me on my adventure setting up this HP Gen7 MicroServer N36L as a TrueNAS Server! We install a modded BIOS, upgrade the RAM to 8GB ECC, install a USB 3.0 card, and install 4 WD Red Plus NAS Hard Drives!
In TrueNAS I used a RAIDZ1 for the 4 drives.

I got my N40L box out from the storage used with FreeNAS 7 from 10 years ago. I updated to TrueNAS Core and ordered some RAM. Good to know that people are still using them.

Great video. I'm glad to see there's still interest in the older microservers after 14 years. I would like to install a NAS OS on mine but I suspect the mini-SAS connector is damaged as BIOS doesn't recognize any drives plugged into the front drive slots. It's a real bummer.

Thats fun - I have my N40L now for ~10 years and it works still like a charm. I only had to replace the power supply (there is a cheaper option then the overpriced HP labeled.) I also added now Truenas core 3 weeks ago and > runs. Maybe the power for bigger raids and the nie apps are too much for the small cube but I am still happy with it.

@@ttropicalgamer6634 why do you need to upgrade if you only need simple NAS functions?

I'm still using my N40L and it's still going strong. Upgraded to TrueNAS scale. Admittedly it's only being used as a backup server. For sure an old machine it's pretty solid..

I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 on both my Gen 7 and Gen 8 microservers. Intend to use the Gen 7 for serving my video files for editing (proxy because of gigabit network and not 10 gigabit). Also, Windolene might be bad, but a wipe should work on your HP monitor!

Can you saturate a 1gb connection? I was thinking about getting a 2.4g nic and a more capable storage controller

The problem with this nifty machine is that today you can get a 6tb hard drive for really cheap, and maybe get 2 6tb drives for a lot less money than the cost of one of these. The drives would not only provide you with redundancy in case of failure, but also hold much more storage than this machine who would be in the corner sipping power. Don't get me wrong, I have two of these. However, I replace them with what I just mentioned...

Why wouldn't you just upgrade the drives in the HP if you already have it? These can handle 10tb+ drives and I believe there's a 20tb drive that's been tested to work.

The bios should be able to handle the 16GB ram upgrade. I'll try the TrueNAS Scale with 2x8GB and post an update.

@@johntre7656 you shouldn't use only 8GBs. But you can force it. Try not to add extra services to the OS. The more storage and services, the slower your TrueNAS will run. I got a little intel atom box with 4gbs providing 8TBs of storage to a steam gaming PC. It works well enough.
