Oliver Barrett IV, a wealthy Harvard student, falls in love with Jenny Cavilleri, a working-class music student. Despite their differences, they get married after graduation. They struggle financially, but Oliver becomes a successful lawyer. They try to start a family but fail to conceive. Jenny is diagnosed with terminal illness, and Oliver seeks help from his estranged father. Jenny passes away, and Oliver's father offers his condolences. Oliver remembers Jenny's words about love never needing an apology and goes to the ice rink where they first met.
