When I first traveled to India in February of 2018, my mind was blown by all of the amazing experiences I had there, including visiting important historical and cultural sites, trying the incredible street food, and even my day-to-day interactions with the people there. I knew when I went back ten months later in November that I wanted to have more magical experiences like that, and this time I got to share them with my travel buddy Sam from Samuel & Audrey!

In the middle of our traditional Bengali breakfast food tour in Decker Lane during our third day in Kolkata, our new friend Anirban took us to a local shop where we could get haircuts, shaves, and massages. Come along with us as we get pampered in Decker Lane, Kolkata!
While we were on our breakfast food tour, we spotted a hole-in-the-wall barber shop called N.S. Barbar Shop. My hair and beard had gotten much longer than I like during my trip, so I took the opportunity to get a haircut, shave, and head massage. I couldn’t wait!
While a haircut here costs 40 rupees, Sam and I offered the barber 500 rupees (roughly $11 U.S.) so he could close down the shop for 30 minutes so we could both get the full experience and film it all. I decided to go with my personal favorite, a skin fade. It was so relaxing to sit in the chair with the fans on after getting up at six in the morning!
As I got my cut, Anirban explained that the reason why Indian barbers are so good at what they do is because they are extremely experienced and skilled and know how to make you look good. I was very impressed with my barber’s blending skills, from shaven at the bottom to gradually more hair as you go up. It’s so hard to get that right, but he did a fantastic job!
My barber also gave me a face massage before he started the actual shaving process. It was really nice and calming, even though he sprayed me in the face with water a few times with no warning. He used a special brush to apply the shaving cream to my beard and used a new razor to cut it. His technique was nice and smooth, but unfortunately, I had a few pimples under my beard that he went over, so I bled a little, but he took care of that right away.
We left my mustache and the barber moved on to blending my sideburns, and then it was on to the head massage. It may not look relaxing, but it was heaven! It was so incredible that I almost fell asleep as he massaged my scalp, temple, and eyebrows. Without question, the best face massage I’ve ever gotten.
Then, he moved on to my upper back and shoulders, which had been carrying the weight of my camera equipment for weeks. I felt like a million bucks afterward!
Then it was Sam’s turn to get a cut. You can see his full experience coming up soon on his channel with his wife, Audrey!
The guy was so skilled that we gave him another 500 rupees! I want to go back to India for all of my haircuts now!

Indian barbers are good because they do not go to schools to learn, they learn from their fathers, uncles, it is mostly a passed on family profession, there are barber communities in all parts of India. They have natural skills with minimal tools. Things are changing these days with anyone learning the skills, yet the good old local barber is the one to go to anytime.

Way to go guys. I'm glad you both did this. There is a place in Mumbai where they have trained BLIND people massage you. That's the body massage though. It helps gainfully employ the handicapped as well. Btw, the "no notice, he just sprayed me" was an lol moment. It's not like the US man. These are street barbers. Now if you want to a salon where they were educated and formally trained, they would likely be communicative. But I don't think you'd get a massage like that there. Google HOOKAH. Maybe you want to do that next.

You can truly see it in his eyes he was enjoying the haircut and messaging part. My eyelids and under my eyes get dark when im falling asleep to a massage and he had that very look. Getting so deep into the facial tissues where people dont really know you have muscle you use everyday.

I miss my haircuts in India. That personal touch and detail is so missed. Here in Australia it's okay but one hair cut is like 30$.
I still remember when i was a kid i used to go to these type of saloons with my dad every sunday cos back then sunday was a synonym to hair cut for every indian kid, and me and my dad both get a haircut for 30 inr inclusive all this massage that my dad used to get when i wait for the cut to be over so i can watch shaktiman at home(indian superhero) good old time not like today where all these traditional barber shops are going extinct and we’re rushing towards machine age where there is no rapport between people.

When I was deployed the barbers on base were all Indian and my god do they know how to cut hair/give face massages. Would start going in on a weekly basis not because I needed a hair cut, but because I wanted a hair cut. Can't beat spectacular service!

This is the first barber I’ve seen on KZread that knows what he’s doing in India
M getting relaxed just by looking at this...
They are so good at their job is because it is a traditional job for them, most of the times these people are doing this from generations, techniques are passed down from generation, they are called NAI in India. The head massage is called CHUMPI from which the word Shampoo is derived, it is so old.

I have traveled a few parts of the world outside India but the Indian Barbers they are the best. Give them a little extra (tips) and you get awesome massage.

Dear David and Sam This the beauty of Our Indian.Glad you both enjoy indian food and hospitality. If you compared to USA , Rates are peanuts.Our guys work so hard on streets and such small places with humble beginnings. As regard pimples after shave, you must be allergic. I am sure the barber applied alum stone after shave. It's the best antiseptic. This service in America would cost you more. India had been invaded so many times and yet it has never propagated violence or hatred. Love , Peace snd Service has been the mindset from time immemorable.
