    It's funny you mentioned the 90's gross out humor considering they tried to market Earthbound that way when it was first released. They used taglines like "This game stinks!" and people thought that meant the game was bad and it impacted sales.

The guides on there are actually really great, well organized for F3 key searching and in-depth. Would recommend for older games in a post-guidebook gaming world where ad infested wikis, long reddit threads, and shoddy journalism are usually now the primary info sources.

    An aspect of it I wasn't expecting but makes sense, is that the biggest downsides to death in normal Earthbound is losing your PP and your other characters staying fallen. In this run though, you don't use PP, and you have infinite money to revive party members because there's nothing else to spend it on besides a house in Onett, so you may as well just bash your head in until you die every time.

    It was one of the reasons people were worried why Earthbound wasn't getting on 'virtual console' back when that started with the Wii. That some copyright issue might show up. Fortunately, it did end up in Nintendo's console stores later on and sold pretty well for what is to many a less impactful SNES title.

    Now at the end of the video, didn't know about the beach boys sample. That just lends Even MORE credence to my theory. In like 92 or something there was an album of the Solar System released by NASA. Electromagnetic waves from all planets were recorded by probes sent in the 70's and 80's to all the planets. At earth, those waves were shifted into the audible spectrum to give us some analog of what space sounds like. Those sounds, that album, I'm POSITIVE is the direct inspiration (if not ripped/sampled???) for the "music" of Giygas. I discovered this in like 12 or 13, however in the years since I think NASA has removed any illicit uploads of that album from KZread. This means it's hard to compare... most videos remaining that have the "songs" (sounds) are ones talking scientifically about them. It's really fascinating regardless of whether or not Giygas might actually be the only alien enemy in all of human media to have scientific basis to its musical existence!

    very good video. honestly, i was very surprised when i saw that this didn't have more views just because of how ridiculous of a challenge this is. the fact that you had the patience to spend over 10k attempts just trying to get to giygas is actually insane and if it was me, i would've broken in the first 200 and would've just used save states. also, it'd be interesting to maybe see this challenge done in mother 3, although it'd probably be easier to do in that game since only lucas and kumatora use PSI anyways.

    Extremely impressive stuff- but I do have one note… you can move around while using teleport alpha. I think the distance is longer when you do but if you are fast enough you can use it even in deep darkness. If you use it right you can move around in the lost underworld super fast, it keeps resetting the timer on the geysers, and it lets you avoid most of the monster too!

    As great as this run is... There was one PSI Teleport you could have skipped. Instead of teleporting to Magnet Hill right after getting the phone call from Mr. Spoon and then going back to Summers to head to Scaraba, you can actually wait until you have to go back to the Onett Library to get the Shyness Book. After grabbing the book, you can trek all the way to Fourside and complete Magnet Hill before heading back to Tenda Village. Sorry, but it looks like you need to start over for the perfect run... Unfortunate.

    I have suggested to my friend as a joke: Cracked Bat%. Just play the entire game with the Cracked Bat as Ness’s weapon. I guess you could make it so nobody else can attack other than Ness.

    My friend loves to do the Cave of the Past, it's her favorite. So I got there in a save file, dumped ALL my items (except like one useless thing), and saved the game, then invited her to finish it for me. She was so pissed about having no items. She tried like twice and hasn't touched it since. So I have a certain appreciation for this video 👍

    There's a cheat code that makes the game initiate its anti piracy behavior, spawning double the enemies. There should be a round two of this with that code active. Oh, but save states would need to be active. The game will sometimes spawn enemies or clones of Ness that freeze the game.

    Wouldn't that still result in Pokey resetting your entire save file at the very end?

    Watching this a few months after my first play through ever and I’m realizing two things 1) you have the most patience possibly of any human and it kinda wants to make me be your friend lmao this video rules and was so cool to watch. Excellent job adding little fun facts like the ‘Dierdre’ sample from The Beach Boys, really helps the video feel even more fun 2) I got… insanely wildly lucky. Because I was able to march straight up to the Devil’s Machine and had zero issues beating Giygas the FIRST TRY. EVER. I realize this is crazy because I’m seeing just how much this game relies on probability and statistics to create the magic. You’re a saint for doing that shit FOR LITERAL MONTHS 😂

    @@fly_hammer My question from the run was: Do you think it would have made much difference if you had finished Magicant without being max level to benefit from the powerup?

  • @fly_hammer

    @fly_hammer

    4 ай бұрын

    I don’t think so. My main issue with Giygas was Paula dying and not Ness, so the HP boost wouldn’t have helped that issue. It also would have made the carbon/diamond dogs and Ness’s Nightmare slightly more difficult. Plus I would have to do a similar run away strat to avoid xp in the fire spring and magicant, which seamed like more work than it was worth

    First time I've actually seen a full playthrough of Earthbound, it was a RPG that I just kind of missed when I was younger despite loving a lot of the other SNES classics and (at least on the relative scale) nicher ones like Seiken Densetsu 3 and Secret of Mana. So from this I will conclude that Earthbound, is clearly a baby easy RPG since you can just basic attack through it. But seriously this was wild, that insanity of getting to Gigas. -Months-. Like, holy shit dude, that is some dedication. Hope to see more from you in the future, and for now will take a look over your backlog!
