I firmly believe that you can rock your way through the CK3 world if you just give in to roleplaying your character and follow the red thread that the Issue tab lies out for you! This video is my attempt to let people new to CK3 in on the secret of mastering the game without knowing anything about it!

Great as always OPB. I would warn people to be careful of the issues and suggestions though. For example, as Rognvalder of Tronde in 867, the game keeps suggesting I declare war against Bjorn of Jamtland. He starts off stronger than us and usually gets stronger - you have to either recruit some Men-at-Arms or obtain allies. But, EVERYTHING you say here I can agree with, especially playing from an RPG standpoint and thinking about educating and marrying your family, courtiers, etc. If anyone wants to see the ENTIRE tutorial (kzread.info/dash/bejne/aZd9mLCIe5ixqdo.html) or Murchad become High King (kzread.info/dash/bejne/rIBplK1_fa27kdY.html) or the first episode of a series where I fail to deliver Rollo unto the Seine (kzread.info/dash/bejne/n6qnpJmRd9jQldY.html).

@@ruukinen OK, but I think plenty of low-hour CK2 players (like me) and new players they're trying to attract with the polish & shine can easily be confused / duped into starting a war they have no chance at winning, multiple times, and rage quitting the game 4ever. Because they don't see the verbal descriptor of relative strength hovering over the levy image, they don't notice enemy allies' strength, they don't understand army quality... I think the auto-suggestions should be for very new play, and new players, so should be more carefully crafted. The wording says something about "rich lands for the taking", which kind of implies a walk in the park to players not familiar with CK / paradox games.
@ruukinen

@@DoubleBizzy But you learn by doing mistakes no? I think it is a very unhealthy mindset that you should be "winning" the very first attempt you make. _Usefull tip that saved me countless times in CK2:_ Don't spend all your money. Keep a 500 to 1000 gold in permanent reserve in case of a bigger foe trying to steal your land. Then use that money to buy mercaneries to save you in said invasion. I usually keep 1000 gold in reserve in case of such an event. Great beginners guide . . . yes playing to your characters strengths really makes all the difference. CK3 does this so much better than CK2, and the new stress system is fantastic for 'encouraging' you to keep to character. I got stuck with a ruler with the Shy trait last night. I didn't think anything of it at first until I discovered that as a shy person (with a diplomacy focus) , she didn't want to interact with anyone. Need to sway a vessel . . . you're getting stress, heck most interactions with other people caused stress and it was an amazing challenge to figure out how to get things done differently than you would with another ruler. @DarkEternal6 The problem with that way of going about it is that there's little to signal to a player that a negative trait was due to inbreding rather than random chance. It would feel pretty bad to breed to characters with great traits and nothing bad only to get a seemingly random and unexpected negative trait. A separate 'Inbred' trait makes it clear that it is a possibility, why it happens, and how to prevent it in the future.

"Mindset" makes complete sense. I started playing like I was playing EU4. Started as Munster, completely decimated everyone around me. Formed Ireland even before first Brian died. My primary heir died but luckily I had a pretty badass daughter. First character died, continued as the daughter. When the succession decision thingy pop-up, I said, naaah, not gonna start a republic here . Got Isles, some of Scotland, Some of England, even some of France. Found a new faith. Religious site. Then watched the "no heir" icon for around 10 years after realizing my head of house, queen didn't have any heir, and she is 50 years old. Then my game was over. I will always remember you, Mad-Lauch, Queen of Ireland. Edit: I just screwed up 4 more games. Start as Castille, murder one of your brothers and get some easy land. Marry daughters and got some duchies in Tuscany. Then say "fuckit" and start attacking everyone. Be irritated by how a country quarter of your size have twice your army size. Still can't get my CK3 mindset. Too much EU4 in my veins. Oh, also, how can I forget, when I see I was 1st in line to succession for couple of duchies in Italy, and started a murder scheme to kill the ruler. And after my scheme was successful, I actually realized, it was my own wife and I actually lost all the claims.

i'm amazed by the focus of this tutorial, it is not the basic "press this button" one, but it actually explains how things work and why. nicely done!
Actually the best beginner's guide--no "quick tips," just overall and granular thought-process explanation to consider how to approach your goals in your own games. Well done.
I’ve been a fan of the series for a long time but this still helped my game, great video!
I've just purchased this game and yes indeed there is many a video that gets straight in with a lot of stuff, which although I love strategy games I find that too overwhelming, plus I simply cant absorb it all. This is a superb video. Two basic guidelines that are explained and demonstrated. Simple. From my limited time playing CK3 it seems they have put a great deal of effort on helping newcomers. As you say, just take your time and be guided by both your character's strengths ( I love that the focus is on characters, story etc;) and follow the issue tabs ! Thanks for the video !
Great stuff! I think this format as a beginners guide really works out well instead of an information overload. Know its has been asked for so I wont bother you with asking myself but looking forward to learning a bit more about succession as to help my kingdom stay strong when rulers perish. Anyways, have a great day man!
This was one of the best introductions to the game I could find- and I’ve been looking for a well-explained guide on what beginners should to focus on for almost two years now. Thank you for this.
Bro, you do such a remarkable job of boiling this game down to the most important aspects. I rarely see a game explainer (let alone a 4x/strategy gamer) explain things so well in such a small amount of time. Serious props to this man. I envy your big sexy brain.

Excellent video, very helpful. I completely agree with your comment about role-playing and the issues tab. However, at least newer players should right-click things that are not realistic achievable at the moment (you can then refresh later to see all the issues again, you don’t lose them by dismissing, it only hides it for the moment. For example, I was a small Duke and my issue tab always pointed out that I could declare war on the Byzantine Empire over a small county (yeah, right), or I could create title to a kingdom when I don’t have anywhere near enough gold. It’s great the issues tab points them out, but I like to trim things down to what is achievable now or in the near future. Then on January 1 each year or so I refresh the issues tab to quickly see all the issues and again dismiss issues that are not yet “ripe.” Great video, first I’ve seen of yours, subscribed.
Fantastic vid - very clear and enjoyable

I think part of my problem as a noob to crusader kings is just not knowing how to play to my advantages. Like for example I’m starting as a very diplomacy heavy Viking ruler. And theres hardly any allies that are strong enough to help me. I tried i 4 diffrent regions. Any tips to avoid big power houses coming after you?
My big tip would be that you don't have to select the lifestyle associated with your character's education and you don't have to complete full trees. There's solid synergy between some of the trees, so dipping into a tree to grab the first couple of perks can be a real boon. Golden Obligations coupled with Truth is Relative can provide a much needed boost in income in the early game. Another example would be a pagan warlord grabbing Flatterer and Benevolent Intent before going deep into the martial lifestyle to better keep all the warriors fighting the right people.

Agree. Some perks are useful for all lifestyles, for example one of the first perks you can get in the Seducer Tree is a fertility bonus, one of the best options at the begining.
I thought this was a joke but its actually helpful
