This raises an interesting question: Are the US and Google restrictions on Huawei ONLY about data security fears or are they also about trying to regain a competitive advantage where they blew it? Judging by the past behaviour of the US and Google, it is about both BUT I suspect that the latter is driving them more.

The restrictions are based on the mistrust of any technology from China. It stems from how the technology is maintained over its lifetime. Specifically updates to the firmware. At any time, the firmware can be updated as part of regular maintenance to include trojans that are costly and difficult to detect. Patch management processes would not discover these trojans since patching teams typically do not have verification resources to ensure that no trojans were included. The base technology is not the problem. The problem is with the management of the control software that runs on top the technology. Because of this, it's really a question of trust. While there may be a competitive rationale for the restrictions, the greater issues of infrastructure and information security are paramount.

Regardless of what the US or Google may want, a communications company should not and would not trust China to not include a trojan in the next firmware or management software patch. This has nothing to do with the needs of the US or Google, and much more to do with stability and control of one's own networks free from possible Chinese interference either directly or indirectly. Any decision to use Chinese equipment would have erroneously been made on pricing alone and not on the long term implications of the purchase. That is, short-term fiscal justifications led to initial purchases without evaluating the long-term risks.

You're right. Once 3GPP has set the standard for error recovery in the modulation for 5G data communication, Huawei, Nokia and Ericsson have nothing more to say in advancing the sector. I believe the proposition of the video "Will the U.S. catch up with China on 5G" is either the result of erroneous journalistic information, or plain chinese disinformation.

That's why the patents are important. Anyone can learn about polar codes, but only Huawei can use them. This gives Huawei a competitive advantage, they can get more data through a medium using identically able hardware when compared to the US's system (low-density parity-check). His work is solely responsible for this competitive edge, as this video explained. 5G isn't an "invention", it's not a comparable to the lightbulb or the Rakin cycle, it's a set of standards that radiotelecommunication devices must adhere to. The video never claimed one person was responsible for its invention.

I never understood the argument surrounding H1 visa for high skilled workers. Yes there’re abuses with some Indian “schools” targeting the system. However, not retaining those who actually earned advanced degrees in STEM in the country just baffles me. These people cost the US nothing from K12 to college, some even financed their own MS or PhD education. Just when they are ready to contribute, we order them to leave so they can use what they learned (from others or themselves as researchers, nevertheless while they live here) somewhere else. What? Why?

I don't recall anything mentioned about this has anything to with citizenship. He got his degree from MIT and spent most of his time in the US trying to sell his ideas there. But it was Huawei that recognize his work and wanted him.

The greatest asset is going to be the ability to recognize and nurture talent from every corner of the world. Venturing beyond the protective walls may sound crazy but every new things are found out there.

A big reason the companies in America didnt want to take the risk on him is because in the wonderful US of A if any new idea has even the slightest chance of impacting a companies profit margin then they will out right refuse it. This sounds very fishy -- the CCP is probably making stuff upm as they are typically known to do. There are usually two paths for PhDs from top-ranking programs, either academia or industry. Academia is somewhat political and limited, but if you are bright and know the right people, no problem. If that doesn't work out, you could always find employer willing to sponsor your stay either as H1B or EB2 for those with exceptional ability (ie, highly cited papers/books, inventions, etc). The tech industry was always short on talents until very recently this year (too many H1B's brough in from India during COVID). Instead this dude went to industry ... drum roll please ... in China. Either he was very lazy, or got kicked out for different reason.

China is an ancient multi-ethnic country with a very rich and diversified culture. It has been thriving on this land for more than 4000 years. May the Buddha bless peace forever

Either they should've cut out some junk in order to explain that vital part a little longer, or they could've extended the video by a minute. Furthermore they didn't even name the process for us to do the research. I tried specifically searching for "moving the noise" in these circuits but struggled to find it.

I for one understand it perfectly. Don´t you understand? The noise was not moved, but rather channeled, channeled to a paralel code, the paralel code itself making use of basic physics and the advantages of alternating current, hence there is no loss of efficiency or extra ressources needed, okay that in my oppinion they could have added to the explanation indeed. As to your final question: That should be once again pretty simple... well at least it is to me: There is a bridge between sender and receiver, logicaly, how can a receiver receive anything without any sort of bridge or connection for said signal? Of course it will need a bridge/connector inbetween. And it is that bridge where the noise originates from, hence you can´t just "move the noise" because you can´t just move or remove the bridge/connector, you still need a bridge/connector... however a bridge means noise... So, how do we fix that? Hence the paralel code to make sure a bridge is still there, but yet with 0 noise, finaly fixing the problem. There, hope this helped and answered your questions.

I agree fully with Emmanuel Goldstein's post. The other thing that happens in the USA is all of the protesting against things like the frequencies and nuclear power that has to run it's coarse through the US court system. This puts us behind other countrys if we are making a race out of it. All of this protesting and lawsuit delays in everything that our country tries to accomplish is starting to look like outside interference from other countrys. Not really an environmental concern.

Well, my iPhone 14 pro max 5G the best speed was around 50mbp to 80mbp (AT&T). Compare to the 4G before, it's not much different.

Similar to a Chinese PhD student in the US. After he graduated, he went for several job interviews. He presented them with his concept.they were laughting and rejecting his ideas. Later, there was one company, willing to accept his concept and hired him. He turned his concept into working solutions. He made millions of dollars for the company. Those companies that rejected him before, found out what he has accomplished, they wanted to hire him but he rejected them. 😊

4G frequencies stop at 2 GHz. The first chunk of 5G frequencies are spread from 2 to 6 GHz, and can use the same cell towers of 4G. The towers are placed up to 10 km away from phones. The true advancement of 5G is brought with the chunk of frequencies from 25 to 60 GHz, which can carry incredible speeds of data transfer. But this second band can't use the current cell towers, as the maximum distance of the 5G (2nd band) tower to the phone is 100 metres max; so this require a transmitter on every lightpole. This hasn't been implemented anywhere so far. The 5G (band 1) towers from Huawei shows an impossible low efficiency, taking ten times more power from the grid, for less emitted power than a 4G tower. So, for doubling the bandwidth (double the data rate) of 4G, the Huawei (band 1) 5G tower use ten times the power. This is why, even if they forced the Chinese users on 5G contracts, they must keep the 5G towers off - except in peak times, which is few hours per day. Sadly, for the moment 5G has proven to be a worldwide scam; the new breed of low price smartphones (

It's not just Erdal Arikan. Turkish nationals in general have a hard time migrating to the US, which is why there's not many. This may be first video that I find lacked more research & proper ending. Maybe the creator couldn't get reach to resources or thougt this was enough. Areas could have been covered are : how 5g is being deployed in other countries, how US is modyifing there policy, how china/huawei did there research & approached the scientist, the hurdles that he faced etc

The high power requirements and short range have overburdened providers with extreme electric requirements and excessive bills. Prior to the current Chinese energy crisis, China Unicom reportedly has been putting their 5G stations to sleep at night in response to excessive power consumption. 5G within factories that robots can communicate efficiently and etc like is a proper use for 5G. I don't see how it would help my experience as I continue to use 4G. The videos download faster than I can view them and I having this video for example loading to my phone within milliseconds doesn't improve my experience. With the global climate challenge at hand, how many of these microwave devices transmitting 1,000 to 3,000 watts per antenna can the climate handle? If you can boil water in my cup when placed in the microwave, how is water within the atmosphere affected over such huge areas of land mass. Can even the hydropower station of the Three gorges dam satisfy the power demands of such a system? You don't have a real telephone line anymore, if you have one it's All digital. Telephone lines with telephones do not require gigawatts of power.. multiple companies competing in the same area fighting for customers very inefficient it seems to me. How many companies are on one Tower that could all be served by one company in most areas. As for Manhattan, has 5G solved the demand and supply issues? China has the largest high-speed rail network in the world. The United States could have had that too. It's losing millions of dollars every day and cannot carry freight, leaving roads to carry even coal. As for the housing crisis, China is flooded with empty shell homes by the tens of millions that are empty. We simply are short millions of homes. Where is the balance here? 5G is necessary for a total surveillance state with police drones that can be armed. That's what China really has that we don't and that you are promoting even if you don't know it. The 5G cell towers maybe powerful microwave issues that may be unhealthy and probably are, power hungry, but not the realist danger. It's what you're able to do with it once it's installed and it's not what we're going to be doing it with it but what they are going to be doing it, and I don't know who the they's are. Seemingly it's very useful when you're trying to lock 21 million people down into their home prison.

Your comments here are 100% spot on, we do not NEED that shit here, nor does anyone who is paying the slightest bit of attention WANT that shit here. All a thousand percentage, except for the bit about planet-wide warming, as there is plenty of available nitrogen in the rocks, soil & plants to neutralize more carbon than human beings can even put into the air, which is a huge factor in why climate modeling projections always turn out to be so wildly inaccurate. The earth is warmed by the sun, & we are actually headed into a cycle called Grand Solar Minimum, which typically results in cooler temperatures. This seems to be the real purpose here, to have the speed & processing power to keep up with & analyze all of our biological data, which they want collected on an ongoing basis. It's a totalitarian surveillance technocracy, with the power to penetrate the internal privacy that for so long we have considered impenetrable- ie, they can lock up my body & throw away the key, but without my compliance they cannot imprison my mind; even if they take away my free expression they cannot take away my ability to THINK freely.
