Incredible acting. They never met irl of course, but dramatizing it, has been much too tempting for many authors and film makers. It was Elizabeth Jenkins book about Elizabeth I and the TV-series in 1970/71 with Glenda Jackson as Elizabeth that spurred my interest for history. An interest that continues.

I was hoping I wasn’t the only one who remembered that movie. Vanessa and Glenda were brilliant together. I don’t like how every work of historical fiction is consistently accused of an attempt to rewrite history these days. The fact that it says historical fiction right on the genre label is the author telling you point blank That this is their imagination if not their opinion, and not a historical discovery.

That’s why it’s called historical fiction. Not the first time it’s happened in cinema. They did a Mary Queen of Scots back in the 70s with Vanessa Redgrave and Glenda Jackson playing the two queens. They had a fictitious meeting in that one as well.

It’s called colorblind casting and that has been around forever. And isn’t it interesting you can ignore the fact that Henry the eighth wasn’t fat in all four seasons of the Tudors yet you can’t ignore the color of someone’s skin for two hours in a movie that nobody forced you to watch.

The Brits are losing credibility with their historic movies by adding inclusion to the roles. Stop it. I likewise would not enjoy or appreciate a white actor in a film about an African tribe or Chinese royalty. Woke in the movies is agitating.

I don't know why writers persist in the myth that Elizabeth and Mary met in person. I think it does a real disservice to history. I refused to watch this movie just for this reason.
