    Good video and very excellent points! I have been in Boca Chica now for 2.5 years and I have no desire to leave the Island. I still haven't learned Spanish, but I'm practicing. I prepare all of my meals, I don't hang out at the bars or the beach. I think that people leave because they have never really truly experienced being alone; if you don't speak Spanish, you are alone. Even if you have fellow foreigners, that you socialize with, you are alone, for the most part. Money is also a big reason, in my opinion; if you are not desciplined, you will overspend or run out. Also with money, professionals.....attorneys, real-estate people and others will rob you blind, if you are not careful. If you are not careful and don't know how to say no, you will pay for deaths, sick parents or children, the leaking roof, etc. In addition to the people that you know asking for money, people that you just seeing in passing or shop at their business will ask you for money; including men. I'm not leaving this beautiful place, because of that, I simply say no and move on. Eventually I want to move to La Romana. Thanks again!

    That's the answer and I figured you were staying in a tourist area. Unfortunately that what happens in those areas. Places like Santo Domingo is normal living. Yes traffic is bad and it's a lot of people but day to day living not like a tourist area. We have no issues like you mentioned above. And my husband is American and he goes many places by himself and never have any issues. We do business with established companies that have prices on their products. No need to ask.

    Thank you sis, you're 100% on point. The problem with most Americans is that they never leave the boarders of the United States 🇺🇸 and they don't have to. Fear is a Disabler, and most Americans refuse to come out of their confront zone because it keeps them safe. I have been traveling the World since I was 21yrs old, I am now 57yrs old and 60 countries and 6 continents forward, I have never had any issues because I embrace all Human Beings and I know that there is greatness in every Culture, Country on all continents. I agree, I think resorts should only advertise to non americans. That way this problem is prevented. I find it difficult to understand why America is so concerned with teaching and showing signs/services/menus in spanish. We should all just expect people to get on board or get out. Makes perfect sense.

    The thing is it seems if they know you are from the states they assume you are rich and charge you typically double the price. I have noticed the prices have doubled on the DR in some of the more frequently visited areas. This will not in my opinion be good for tourism as the people will visit less expensive places.

    The TRUTH about why EXPATS LEAVE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC... Not knowing the particular situation in the DR, but knowing the reasons for leaving Thailand and the Philippines, I strongly assume, that they are leaving because of their unrealistic expectations and because of being financially unprepared. Most of them go with $1500 a month and believe, they will be rich in these countries. Then, when the reality sets in, and they see that the grass is not greener on the other side, they go back home, totally frustrated and disappointed.

    Great video as usual, Norberis! I'll have to sign up for italki since my mama didn't teach me Dominican Spanish 😑🥲 And you're correct that it's important to learn the language/culture - it is very difficult to connect with people if you don't know at least a lil bit of the language and culture. Like...unless they plan on living in a bubble, they would need to adapt and assimilate at least a lil bit. But I think most people's mistake is they just dive right in like you said - they don't do enough research and more importantly, they don't stay in the place they plan to move to in order to get an honest feel for the environment. There's simply some things you can't google and you just have to live the experience to find out first hand. I think people should stay for at least a month or two and rent an apartment, and explore the island before deciding to move full time like you said.

    First, I really like your videos a lot👍. I have found that people leave the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 due to not being able to say NO to Dominicans that constantly beg or ask for money (my baby needs milk, my family member needs money for an operation, the neighbor needs money to travel to a funeral, my girlfriend needs money for a new Iphone, if you hang out on the town with Dominican friends they expect you to pay for everything, etc). This leads foreigners to run out of money extremely fast, because they want to be nice and help everyone while Dominicans view foreigners as walking ATMs (Dominicans really believe all foreigners are rich). Some people leave the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 after getting hustled by Sanky Pankies and Chapiadoras, because they fall in love 🥰 just to find out that the person they loved has 3-5 other people that they are sleeping with and they are getting used for their money or used to start a business to make money. Many people do not know that it is common in the Dominican culture for a husband or wife to sleep with other people as long as they are bringing extra money from sleeping around to the household 🏠. The cultural difference of accepted polygamy between husband's and wives is one of those things that many foreigners can't wrap their thinking and minds around in my opinion. At the same time, if people go to the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 they should understand and follow the culture as opposed to trying to make the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 follow and adhere to the standards and principles of the country that they come from. If people don't like how things are done and the culture they should just leave the island, because the Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 is not going to change for them.

  • @NorberisR

    @NorberisR

    Жыл бұрын

    Thanks for sharing your experience but the part about it being cultural accepted that husband and wives sleep around to bring in money is not true. I'm not sure of the type of people you associate with but there's nothing common about this. Are there people who live this type of lifestyle of course. People like this exist all over the world. My advice after reading this is you need to pick better friends. Your idea of Dominican culture as a whole is warped. I understand these are your experiences but your experiences doesn't speak for our culture as norm.

  • @charlesharrison5398

    @charlesharrison5398

    @@NorberisR I understand where you are coming from completely, but these are just my observations after talking to many foreigners, having Dominican 🇩🇴 friends and having my own experiences living in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic 🇩🇴. In my opinion, at the end of the day it's all about money for the most part. I'm not trying to say that all Dominicans 🇩🇴 are bad or money hungry; however, when people are in "survival mode" there is no limit to what they will do or allow to get money for themselves or their family. It's just my honest opinion that Dominicans 🇩🇴 really do see foreigners as walking ATMs and use foreigners for money 🤷. As for it being common for husband's or wives to get extra money from sleeping around with other people, if I'm wrong go take a look at the long line of married people constantly receiving money at Western Union from their foreign girlfriend or boyfriend. In my opinion, this is culturally acceptable because it happens quite often from what I have seen.

  • @NorberisR

    @NorberisR

    Жыл бұрын

    Long lines at Western Unions is not proof of anything culturally accepted...lol! That is absurd to use this as a reference. You have no clue if the women or men in that line are married or not. Do you ask them? Matter fact you have no idea who is sending the money. Do you ask everybody this? You are assuming which is ridiculous. I lived in the US and sent my mom, brothers, and aunts money through Western Union. They were all in those lines. I never said your experiences weren't true because obviously, they are. I said your sense of Dominican culture based on those experiences is warped. And it is. I only pushed back on the sleeping around being culturally accepted. I know you don't know more Dominicans than me and none of them behave this way. But this doesn't mean some don't but to group your experiences and those people you know into the majority is silly. Because trust me I can do the same about Black American culture and stereotype everyone, but with my husband being a black man and knowing his family I'd be ignorant to group all black people into one category, like you are doing Dominicans. Have a great day.

    Your experiences are not offensive. Who am I to say what someone did or did not experience while being here if I'm not there with them. It's only offensive when you take those negative experiences and group all Dominican and Dominican culture in that category. Some of the things you said were true. A lot of Dominicans think foreigner are rich or have money, I agree. Or Dominicans expect the person with money to pay every time we go out, I know this to be true because my family does me like this and I'm Dominican. But to imply we and culture have no morals and sleep around just to bring in oney is false and I'm not going to let a comment like that sit on my page without checking it. No hard feelings. 🇩🇴

    There are ways to live inexpensively in the States - for example living in a Cargo Van. When you move to a poor country for a variety of reasons (access to younger women - and so-forth) - that usually costs money. A relationship based on "money" versus "spirituality" invites crime in the long run. The young boyfriend on the side has friends.

Based on 2 and 3 they do the same thing every day. 5. They don't form true friendships. 6. They move there for the cost of living, weather, chicas bought. 7. They cannot find a true dominican woman because, they have no language, they don't desire to learn, which handy caps them. 8. At 1st it is fantasy land to them in the very small region that they stay, but it gets old to them, they feel like they are in a prison. Santo Domingo is my heaven on earth , the only concerns I have is walking down streets with dangerous wires hanging that can potentially hurt you and maybe a hole 🕳 in the ground so watch your steps and there’s no serious ambulatory system like the United States 🇺🇸 so be seriously careful other than what I mentioned enjoy yourself and be respectful! I also would suggest to shop like the locals and stay in the DR for at least two to three months and you will get the feel for the country and make friends. I also say come with an open heart and be willing to teach English or a skill and you will find your place there. If you miss family , video call them and see them on special occasions! The real key to living anywhere is to have multiple streams of income , never be deceived money is everything, the ability to create cash flow will help facilitate a beautiful life but every life has issues but yours won’t be money. I love this KZread channel because Norberis is a very good hearted person and always keeping it real , much love and respect to her, y Feliz año nuevo 🪅

    @@NorberisR It's too bad because he was a great ambassador to your country. I had the DR on my list as a great retirement location not anymore. I now think of it as a great vacation spot 😎

    Too bad for who? It's his decision and I'm sure he is happy with it. And everyone is not going to have the same outcome as the next person. I too am a GREAT ambassador of my country that's why many people are moving here because of the content I produce.

    @@NorberisR i sgree you are a great ambassador. But, as an American I will listen to the experiences of a fellow American who was living there. This has nothing to do with you. I'm a subscriber to your channel 😎

    As for the language I think I have heard that Dominicans are the fastest Spanish speakers in the world. Is that correct?

    The weather would definitely be a problem for me. I have lived in Alaska for over 40 years and the heat is one of the main reasons I left Texas. The main attraction of the Dominican Republic to me would be the fact that it is a Spanish speaking country but I know Dominican Spanish is different. It is in the category of what I would call Caribbean Spanish. I do wonder about differences between Dominican, Puerto Rican, or and Cuban versions of Spanish if there are differences.

    I was in the D.R. a few years ago and seen a woman step on a lizard and didn't realize it. Have you seen a lizard get stepped on, or have you stepped on one?

    Norberis ! I'm a chocolate man that speaks some espanol and want to move to the DR in the future. I want to avoid the areas that have been heavily gentrified and full of "tourists" What are some places you think? One of my friends who moved there told me Las Terreras is not good because a lot of "Racist gringos" are moving there. I just want something laid back , gyms, near the water and less touristy
